Paul and Barnabas at Cyprus, Antioch, and Iconium Acts 13 and 14 Visuals • a Map of Asia Minor That Shows the Places Paul Has Gone Paul and Barnabas at Cyprus, Antioch, and Iconium Acts 13 and 14 Visuals • A map of Asia Minor that shows the places Paul has gone. o I suggest that you make your own map and begin with it empty. As you talk about the cities that Paul visits (both this week and in the weeks to come), fill out the map. For each city, make a small picture of one of the things that happened there for the kids to remember. Introduction • Who are we talking about the past few weeks? Paul. Who is with Paul? Barnabas. What are they doing? Going to tell others about Jesus • This week, we’re going to talk about what Paul and Barnabas did as missionaries on their first missionary journey. • This week, we’re going to cover three places that they went: Cyprus, Antioch in Pisidia, and Iconium. Cyprus • When Paul and Barnabas sailed to Cyprus, they first went into the synagogue to preach the gospel. • A synagogue is like a church for Jewish people. Only a real church talks each week about Jesus and what Jesus did on the cross. The people in the synagogue didn’t believe in Jesus. So Paul and Barnabas came to tell them that Jesus had come, and he was the one they had been waiting for. • Well, when Paul and Barnabas came to Cyprus, there was a man there named Sergius Paulus. Sergius Paulus was a really important person in the land. And he wanted to know more about who Jesus was. • Paul and Barnabas came to him and told him the gospel. Told him that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again. • But there was another man, Elymas, the sorcerer. Elymas did not believe in Jesus. In fact, he hated Jesus or talking about God. And when Paul talked to Sergius about the gospel, Elymas would say, “That’s not true. It’s all a lie.” • And finally Paul was so tired of Elymas saying things that weren’t true, that he turned to him and said, “You child of the devil, won’t you ever stop blocking the work of God? Because you’re doing this, God make you blind that you cannot see the sun.” • And Elymas went blind. • When Sergius saw that God was powerful enough to make Elymas go blind just like that, he believed that Jesus Christ really did die for his sins. Antioch • When Paul and Barnabus left Cyprus, they came to Antioch in Pisidia. At Antioch, they went straight to the synagogue to tell them that Jesus has come at last. • In fact, Acts 13 even tells us what they said. Paul told how God had sent Saul to lead Israel, but he wasn’t the one. And God had sent David to lead, but he wasn’t the one. And God had sent John the Baptist, and he wasn’t the one. The one who came to forgive sins wasn’t going to decay in the grave. He was going to live forever. It was Jesus • Jesus did die, but he rose again. And he did it all for our sins. • And do you know what happened? Half of the people believed. And half of the people rejected. They said. No. That’s not for us. Iconium • When Paul and Barnabas got to Iconium, do you know where they went first? The synagogue. • And do you know what Paul did at the synagogue? He preached about Jesus. In fact, the Bible says that Paul did signs and wonders. • And do you know what happened with the people at Iconium? Some of them said, “Wow! This man is doing miracles, he must be from God. I believe in Jesus.” And others said, “This man is trying to trick us. This isn’t true. We don’t want to believe that.” • And the people who didn’t believe were so upset with Paul and Barnabas that they were about to stone them, throw large rocks at them, when Paul and Barnabas decided to leave. They just decided to get out of the city. Conclusion • Did you notice a pattern in the stories tonight? Some people accepted while others rejected. • Why do you think some of the people weren’t willing to accept Jesus as forgiver of their sins? Satan. Paul called Elymas a child of Satan because Elymas tried to keep Jesus from being preached because he was working for Satan. • Satan wants to keep people from knowing the truth about Jesus. And it works. There are some people he gets. • How do we work against Satan? Through the Word of God. By preaching. Through Jesus. By knowing what Jesus did and why. Satan can’t get to us if we’re trusting Christ. • And Satan is working on you. Satan wants some of you not to believe in Jesus or to listen to what I’m saying right now. Fortunately, the Holy Spirit is also working, and he will bring some of you to hear and accept what I’m saying. • Don’t give in to Satan and let him trick you. Fight him by listening to and reading the Word of God and by thinking about what Jesus has done for You. • Let’s pray. .

  • M=Missionary Journey Begins Acts 13
M=Missionary journey Begins Acts 13 Missionary: a person who goes out to spread the good news of Jesus Paul & Barnabas began their first missionary journey in Acts 13. When they came to a new city, they usually went first to a synagogue where they could talk to the Jews. Chapter 13 is the beginning of Paul’s missionary journeys. This chapter is also important because Paul becomes the main character of Acts, and Peter slips into the background. Christians were in Antioch worshipping. Antioch is significant because Christians were first called Christians here. Acts 11:26. This was also the first church that was mission minded. While worshipping, the Holy Spirit picked Paul and Barnabas to start preaching abroad. The men there fasted, prayed and put their hands on them and sent them off. John Mark also traveled with them. They sail to the island of Cyprus and travel through it to Paphos on the western side of it. They meet a sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus aka Elymas. The proconsul (governor) of the city Sergious Paulus wanted to hear Paul, but Elymas didn’t want him to. So Paul filled with the Holy Spirit lets Elymas have it, and then Elymas is blinded for some time! Because of this the proconsul believed. John returns home to Jerusalem. This is important because in Acts 15:38 Barnabas wants to take John again and Paul doesn’t think it is wise because John deserted them in Pamphylia. But we see in II Timothy 4 they had worked out their disagreement.

Acts 13-28b 8/19/96 2:04 PM Page 1 The Character of an Effective Church 1 (Acts 13:1–13) Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. And while they were min- istering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus. And when they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper. And when they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelli- gence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for thus his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the pro- consul away from the faith. But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze upon him, and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the 1 Acts 13-28b 8/19/96 2:04 PM Page 2 13:1–13 ACTS devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord? • Paul and the Spread of the Church New Testament Survey – Lesson 17 (Part 2)
Acts of the Apostles – Paul and the Spread of the Church New Testament Survey – Lesson 17 (Part 2) In ninth grade, we took an aptitude test measuring our skills and interests for possible careers. I think the goal was to help guide us in our decisions over what courses to take as high school unfolded before us. I had never really given much thought to a career, but taking this assessment certainly focused my mind on the options! By the time the test results came in, I was really intrigued. I wanted to know what I was built to do! The results gave me three main career aptitudes. I don’t remember the order, but I never forgot the three that rose to the top. My aptitude test indicated I would do best as a preacher, a lawyer, or a politician. I was thrilled. All three of these sounded like marvelous careers! I signed up for debate and Latin as my next electives, figuring both would serve me well in any of the three fields. I also had our church intern, who was taking New Testament Greek at the time at Lubbock Christian University, start tutoring me in New Testament Greek. I kept up the Latin and debate throughout High School and then went to college to study for the ministry or law school. (I never was sure how you studied to be a politician!) My college degree was a B.A. in “Biblical Languages,” but it came through the Bible Department and was appropriate in my church background to place me in a pulpit preaching.

  • Restart Week 6: Overcoming Opposition Acts 13:1-12 David Bawks - Pathway Community Church (April 11, 2021)
ReStart Week 6: Overcoming Opposition Acts 13:1-12 David Bawks - Pathway Community Church (April 11, 2021) Good morning Pathway! Welcome to our service today. Today we’re moving to week six of our series ReStart. As we move through 2021, we’re praying and seeing God’s guidance as to how we can restart and revamp what we’re doing this year. We’ve been exploring the book of Acts to learn how the Holy Spirit lead the early believers through persecution and other challenges to reach people for the gospel. Let’s review, who was the focus of our message last week? Where did he have an experience with God? 1) No one is beyond the reach of God’s transformation. 2) Let’s welcome those transformed by God. Today we are moving on to chapter 13, verse 1 – 12. 13 1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. 4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.

Sent Series Bible & Life Guide Sunday Sermon Date: 1 / 31 / 2021 Sent to Cypress Acts 13:1-12 ____________________________Main Point___________________________ The church is sent out to share the gospel and to confront false beliefs. ___________________________ Introduction__________________________ 1. Are all Christians called to share the gospel? Why or why not? 2. If we’re commanded to tell the story of Jesus to others, why do we avoid the task? 3. What do we learn about God from His desire to be known and to use us to make His name known? When we think about what makes for a truly transformational church, a heart for the spread of the gospel is essential. If we’re going to play an active part in kingdom building, then we must be sensitive to God’s leadership and go where He tells us to go. But this isn’t possible if we aren’t listening to Him and seeking His will for our lives. Following Christ means we give up our rights to our plans and ambitions. Instead, we say to Jesus, “Where you send, I’ll go.” ________________ _____Understanding / Discussion___________________ Read Acts 13:1-3 4. What was the scene when the Holy Spirit spoke to the leaders at Antioch? How do you think He may have spoken? How does He speak today? 5. What role does the Holy Spirit play in our fulfillment of God’s vision for the gospel? The Spirit clearly designated whom He wanted the church to send out as missionaries. He said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” It is God who selects and calls those He chooses to cross geographic and cultural boundaries with the good news of the gospel.

Monthly Memory Verse School Age: Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Bible Story Preschool: Paul and Barnabas were teachers in the church at Antioch. God wanted them to go to many places and tell people about Jesus. The men in the church prayed for Paul and Barnabas before they left. The church sent them out as missionaries. Paul and Barnabas sailed to an island called Cyprus. They taught about Jesus in the synagogues (churches). The synagogue was a place where people went to pray and learn about God. Then they sailed from the island and went many other places. Everywhere they went, they told the people about God and that Jesus was God’s Son. Many people wanted to hear more about Jesus. In one town, Paul taught about Jesus in the synagogue. The people asked Paul and Barnabas to come the next week and teach them more about Jesus. A large crowd came to hear Paul. Some of the people believed Jesus was God’s Son; other people did not believe. Paul and Barnabas continued to be missionaries and tell people about Jesus in many different places.
