Las Vegas, Nevada. ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note The University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian was born in Euclid, Ohio on August 8, 1930. He coached college basketball for 31 seasons, from 1973 to 1992, he coached the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, leading them four times to the Final Four of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, winning the national championship in 1990. The floor of UNLV's home arena at the Thomas & Mack Center was named "Jerry Tarkanian Court" in 2005 and in 2013, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Jerry Tarkanian passed away on February 11, 2015.     Gopher Basketball 2008-09 Coaching Staff [ 71 ] Minnesota Basketball 2008-09 Gopher Basketball 2008-09 Head Coach Tubby Smith TUBBY SMITH Head Coach n March 23, 2007 Tubby Smith was announced as the 16th head bas - ketball coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men’s Basketball pro - gram. One of the most respected coaches in the country and a nation - O al champion was coming to Gold Country to lead the Gopher program. The excitement of bringing one of the top coaches in the country to the University of Minnesota was only matched by the satisfaction of welcoming one of the classiest individuals in the world of college basketball today to the Maroon and Gold. In his first season at the “U”, Smith took a team that had won nine games the season before to a 20-14 record. The Gophers finished sixth in the Big Ten Conference at 8-10 and were the sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The 11-game improvement in the win column from the 2006-07 season is the largest season turn - around in school history and tied for the second-best turnaround in Division I in 2007-08. Also, the five-win improvement in conference play was the second biggest Big Ten turnaround in 2007-08. Smith came to Minnesota with a reputation for winning at the highest level not matched by many coaches in the country. In his 17-year career, he has claimed a National Title (Kentucky in 1997-98), made four “Elite Eight appearances”, nine “Sweet Sixteen” appearances, posted 15 straight 20-win seasons and has the 12th-best active winning percentage of any coach at the Division I level with a 407-159 record (.719).

    RELEVANT SWISS LAWS 9 Three similar criminal cases involving college basketball are currently progressing through the Southern District of New York. The first to go to trial, United States v. James Gatto, Merl Code, and Christian Dawkins, No. 17 Crim. 686, culminated in a guilty verdict on October 24, 2018, with all three defendants found guilty on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York alleged that the Gatto defendants participated in a scheme in which the defendants—former Adidas employees Gatto and Code, as well as aspiring sports agent Dawkins—made payments to the families of college-bound athletes in exchange for the athletes’ agreement to play basketball at universities with teams sponsored by Adidas. 1 Prosecutors characterized this conduct as a criminal conspiracy, rather than a mutually beneficial business transaction, because the payments violated the amateurism policy of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“NCAA”), the private organization that regulates college athletics at member institutions. NCAA regulations provide that athletes lose their eligibility to participate in NCAA sports if they receive payment for their athletic skills, and the NCAA imposes sanctions on universities for noncompliance by their athletes. The NCAA also requires that both student-athletes and coaches submit to their schools annual certifications of compliance with NCAA rules.2 Trials of two other groups of defendants were previously scheduled for later this year. In both cases, the charges involve schemes wherein student-athletes received payments in violation of the NCAA’s amateurism rules.

The Blue Devils used a 17-7 run early in the second half to pull away from Kansas and fought off a furious late-game assault by the Jayhawks to win, 72-65, Monday night at the Hoosier Dome. "I'm so happy for our guys," said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I'm not sure if anyone's ever played harder for 80 minutes to win a national title." The Blue Devils (32-7) had fallen short ofthe championship in eight previous trips to the Final Four, including four ofthe last five years. But in 1991 Duke would not be denied. "I feel good but [not winning the title] has never been a monkey on my back," Krzyzewski said. "Did you see the players' faces? I looked at my three daughters and saw them crying. I'm just so happy." Christian Laettner, the most outstand­ ing player ofthe tournament, had his first double-double—18 points and 10 rebounds — in 12 games to lead Duke. In 1943, the University of Wyoming was led to the NCAA Championship by legendary coach Everett Shelton. Shelton’s 1943 Cowboy squad defeated Georgetown in the NCAA Championship game in Madison Square Garden. Two nights later, also in Madison Square Garden, the Cowboys earned the right to call themselves undisputed National Champions as they defeated that year’s NIT Champion, St. John’s University, in a game benefitting the Red Cross. In 1982, Coach Shelton’s memory was immortalized with the highest honor in basketball — induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The ‘43 Cowboys featured All-American Kenny Sailors, who dazzled fans with an innovation that would change the way basketball would be played forever — the jump shot. Another Wyoming great that college basketball fans across the country still remember is Fennis Dembo. Dembo led the Pokes to the Sweet 16 of the 1987 NCAA Tournament and the next season graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine’s College Basketball Preview issue.
