Ilm Involved in the Visual Effects of Iron Man Breaking New Iron Man Trailer 3Dup.com - The Computer Graphics Portal Ilm Involved in the Visual Effects of Iron Man Breaking New Iron Man Trailer March 16, 2008 - 17:04 Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) announced that it had come on board as the principle visual effects house on the new Marvel Studios production of Iron Man. Sister company Skywalker Sound, which houses EFILM's northern California outpost, completes the post production triumvirate. Skywalker Sound will handle sound design and mix duties for the film. Marvel Studios' big screen adaptation of Marvel's legendary Super Hero Iron Man, will launch into theaters on May 2, 2008. Oscar® nominee Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark/ Iron Man in the story of a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implication, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. The film also stars Oscar® nominee Terrence Howard, Oscar® winner Gwyneth Paltrow and OscarÃ?® nominee Jeff Bridges and will be directed by Jon Favreau. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film domestically and in various international territories. "When we first heard the news about Marvel becoming a studio we were very intrigued," explained ILM President Chrissie England. "Marvel has a rich library of fantastic storylines and iconic characters and Kevin Feige is the perfect person to lead them to success. When Iron Man was announced here at ILM the artists started knocking down my door asking to be assigned to the project. We are all thrilled at the opportunity to work on this film and equally excited for our new relationship with Marvel." "This is also a great script, with new and challenging work, which is just the way we like it here," added Visual Effects Supervisor Ben Snow (Star Wars: Episode II, King Kong) who is heading up the ILM team with Oscar winning Animation Supervisor Hal Hickel (Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2, 3). Wayne Billheimer is producing for ILM, with Gretchen Libby as ILM's Executive Producer on the project. "We are thrilled to partner with Industrial Light & Magic on Iron Man. Their resume speaks for itself, and the visual effects expertise they bring to this project fit perfectly with the high-tech look and feel of this film. Through this collaborative effort, we look forward to providing movie-goers the high-action, visually compelling entertainment they expect from the Marvel brand," said Kevin Feige, President of Production, Marvel Studios. Marvel's SVP of Post Production, Charlie Davis elaborates, "The post production process on a movie of this scope is always very complex and having ILM create the Visual effects, Skywalker Sound design and mix the sound, and E-film digital color time the picture all in close proximity up in San Francisco is the best of all worlds come together." : : Page: 1 / 2 : : 3Dup.com - The Computer Graphics Portal Touting a new relationship with EFILM at the Ranch, Skywalker Sound's VP and general manager Glenn Kiser stated, "Because of EFILM's DI suite at the Ranch, our clients can now finish sound and picture at the same time under one roof. At Skywalker, we've always coupled the best creative talent with top technology, and we're looking forward to showing off our best work on Iron Man. We can't wait to have Jon Favreau and his team in the house." Multiple Oscar winner Chris Boyes (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Titanic) will tackle sound design and the mix. • NVIDIA Quadro Powers All Five Academy Award Nominees for Best Visual Effects
NVIDIA Quadro Powers All Five Academy Award Nominees for Best Visual Effects "Alice in Wonderland," "Inception," "Iron Man 2," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," and "Hereafter" Nominated for VFX Oscar SANTA CLARA, CA -- This year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded the Best Visual Effects category to five nominated films, and it was another clean sweep for films that relied on NVIDIA® technology -- all Oscar nominees in this category were created by studios using NVIDIA® Quadro® professional graphics solutions. Double Negative (DNeg) created visual effects for several of this year's nominated films including "Inception," "Iron Man 2," and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Central to DNeg's effects workflow is their proprietary fluid simulation system, known as "Squirt," a component of which was recently rewritten to leverage the NVIDIA CUDA™ parallel computing architecture and Quadro graphics processing units (GPUs). "Moving our fluid solver onto the GPU allows our artists to get back the results of their simulations much faster," said Dan Bailey, lead GPU developer, DNeg. "Fluid simulations are now sent to a specialized GPU farm, giving artists more time to iterate and ramp up the complexity of a shot to achieve a more believable result for the big screen." "Iron Man 2" features spectacular visual effects work, much of which was delivered by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). "Working with NVIDIA Quadro, we're able to work faster and iterate more frequently, which hugely benefits our artists, and ultimately the quality of our project work on films like 'Iron Man 2,'" notes Ben Snow, ILM visual effects supervisor.

  • Annotated Filmography
Tim McLaughlin, Associate Professor and Department Head Department of Visualization, College of Architecture, Texas A&M University Annotated Filmography This document has been composed for the purpose of illuminating my contributions to projects that are the products of collaborative work in a commercial environment that is not consistently supportive of public disclosure about specific techniques and discoveries. The information listed is composed for brevity and to clarify my role in the work. Projects are listed in reverse chronological order after first being grouped by the scope of my responsibility. Of importance to note are the dates during which ILM/Lucasfilm was developing specific techniques relative to when those techniques were widely adopted across the visual effects industry. A. Associate Visual Effects Supervisor / Front End Supervisor Responsibility for overall project artistic and technical supervision, secondary to the visual effects supervisor. 1. Untitled feature film project. Fully animated feature film development project. Directed by George Lucas. Produced by Lucasfilm Animation. Project indefinitely postponed in August 2007. • Significance of the project: − Through this project Lucasfilm Ltd. pushed technology for z-viz, the in-house proprietary software developed for pre-visualization projects. The technology is a direct result of George Lucas’ stated goal for non-expert users, such as himself and fellow directors, to be able to manage the storyboarding process in a 3D format. The ultimate goal of z-viz is to replace 2D storyboarding with 3D information that is (a) more informative about visual space and movement, and (b) integrate the development of assets used in story development with pre- production and post production.

  • Digital Practices: an Aesthetic and Neuroesthetic Approach
Digital practices: an Aesthetic and Neuroesthetic approach to Virtuality and Embodiment In this paper, I offer a description of various performance and art practices which involve interaction with „new technologies‟- such as, motion tracking, artificial intelligence, 3D modeling and animation, robotics, digital paint, interactive sound technology, and biotechnology. My theoretical approach consists of both an aesthetic perspective, a development from my previous liminal theorisation, and a neuroesthetic approach, which relates to the biological processes that inform how we perceive. According to Heidegger: Because the essence of technology is nothing technological, essential reflection upon technology and decisive confrontation with it must happen in a realm that is, on the one hand, akin to the essence of technology and, on the other, fundamentally different from it. Such a realm is art. (1977, 35) Performance and technology in all its divergent forms is an emergent area of performance practice which reflects a certain being in the world - a Zeitgeist; in short, it provides a reflection of our contemporary world at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In a relatively short period of time there has been an explosion of new technologies that have infiltrated all areas of life and irreversibly altered our lives. Consequences of this technological permeation are both ontological and 2 epistemological, and not without problems as we see our world change from day to day. It is my belief that digital practices as experimental artworks and performances both serve as critique and have an indirect affect on the social and political, though a redefinition of this term is certainly needed, in as much as they question the very nature of our accepted ideas and belief systems regarding new technologies.
