HAMMER Hammer Glamour was a term applied to the attractive starlets who were sometimes little more than victims of the title monster in the Hammer Films, and who were promoted extensively for ornamental publicity purposes including gracing the studio Christmas greeting cards. They were the actresses that audience members had either not seen before or knew little about, but whose onscreen presence set hearts beating a bit Hammer Glamour. It is not only filled with stunning photographs, but also provides excellent overviews of the lives of these performers both with and beyond Hammer Glamour. Some stories are sadly tragic Susan Denberg and Barbara Payton. And every single one was worth discovering. For the others, though, these pages have already enhanced my enjoyment of the Hammer horror films. View all 4 comments. Oct 19, Mista K rated it it was amazing. I bought this book during a late night, rum fuelled bout of nostalgia for my lost Hammer Glamour. I'm glad I did. It bought Hammer Glamour memories of all those wonderful, darkly erotic Hammer movies and the cast of beautiful women that floated through wisps of ethereal mist from the tv screen and into my adolescent fantasies. I have realised that the older I get, the more important nostalgia has become and this fabulous book has a revered place on my bookshelf. Hammer Glamour the big attraction here, of course, is the photos, most of which are publicity glamour photos, though there are also some film stills. These are fine examples of the art of Hammer Glamour photography ranging from modest shots of fifties stars showing lots of leg to seventies scream queens showing pretty much everything. This does exactly what Hammer Glamour title promises. Its an encyclopaedia of the women of Hammer films with some truly gorgeous stills. My only moan is that some of the entries aren't long enough - at the back we get 'also starring' where some of the minor actresses only get a paragraph and a small picture - amongst those are Melissa Stribling and Dawn Adams, whom I Hammer Glamour have loved Hammer Glamour have seen get more coverage. Hearn profiles 50 of the Hammer Glamour female players in Hammer film history in this huge, gorgeous book packed with tons of stills, poster art, and images from the films. My only complaint-- and I realize this was more my expectation and not really part of the scope of the book-- is that there's no real info on the costume and makeup designers who helped create the amazing wardrobes and looks for the actresses. The Reptile (1966) It's easy to discount The Reptile as being the most hackneyed and cliché-ridden of all the Hammer Gothics - but that's only because it takes the natural progression of such films to almost its logical conclusion. Because it is so much of a full-blown Gothic horror in every sense of the word, T he Reptile takes on every ingredient of the films which went before it, and mixes them together into a film so special that even when it's shown on the TV, the listings guides don't take the piss out of it. It really has got everything. For a start it's set in Cornwall - there's a small village beset by what appears to be an evil curse, and a huge manor house owned by a dodgy doctor.

Day one in strange land, 9h pm It is very cold in the chapel, even with the fire. They are somewhat disconcerted with the images and statues inside the church, like if this religion was glorifying torture ? (DM note: my take on their interpretation of the catholic religion images inside the church ;) ) They decide to learn the tongues spell from Vrood's spellbook. They will have a guard on duty at all time, fearing soldiers could invade the village during the night. One of them is staying in the church bell tower, watching outside. The night is quiet and snowy. Day two in strange land, morning They see many villagers gathering at the mayor's place early in the morning. Shortly after that, they see five men leaving the village with sleighs. They leave in Akuvskaya's direction. Nadja arrives at the chapel with two other women. They bring warm food to the heroes. They all make strange signs when they enter the chapel (a move with the hand, from chin to navel, then to both shoulders). In her strange language, Nadja explains something obviously sad about her destroyed village, Akuvskaya, but they do not understand anything. With sign languages, involving the sun's position in the sky, Exigu asks when are the men coming back. She understands what he means and her answer mean "very late today".

  • MAD MONKS, KGB AGENTS, and SLEEPING DOGS Grigory Rasputin
MAD MONKS, KGB AGENTS, AND SLEEPING DOGS Grigory Rasputin, the "mad monk," was a very powerful man in the court of Tsar Nicholas of Russia. This illiterate Siberian peasant with stringy hair, tangled beard, and a strong body odor established a position for himself in the Romanov court when he apparently saved the life of Nicholas's son Alexis, who was wasting away after sustaining a minor blow to the thigh. Alexis was a hemophiliac, thanks to a gene he had inherited from his mother, Alexandra, the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria. Rasputin told the tsarina that the way to save the boy was to keep him out of the clutches of the doctors and to pray. The advice turned out to be sound, because as soon as the doctors ceased their prodding and probing, Alexis's internal bleeding stopped. The tsarina and the tsar became indebted to Rasputin. Rasputin's growing influence and bizarre behavior aroused a great deal of jealousy and concern among those at court. They frowned upon the monk's belief that to be absolved of sin, one must first commit a sin; the greater the sin, the greater the forgiveness when the sin was renounced. Indeed, if a young female penitent had not sinned enough, Rasputin was more than willing to help her. The final straw for Rasputin's enemies was when the tsar began to take his advice on political matters. Under the leadership of Prince Ytissopov, these courtiers hatched a scheme to eliminate the demonic clergyman who had already developed a supernatural aura after miraculously recovering from a stabbing.
