One thing leads to another, and they end up about The Christmas Train get married. What else? This is a Hallmark movie, the video version of Harlequin Romance. Like any such romance, it focuses almost entirely on the character's feelings, which are sketched in with cliched dialogue, portentous glances, one world-weary sigh after another, and so on. These books and movies are designed to enable the audience to fantasise a life- and love-style. I recorded it last December for later viewing because it was The Christmas Train on a train. The movie's adapted from a novel by David Baldacci, a shlock writer of considerable skill. He has the formulas down pat, and knows how to plot the story so that it's just over the line of reality, which makes suspension of disbelief easier. Unless, like me, you happen to have technical knowledge that spoils the illusion. There were too many small inconsistencies in the railroad setting, along with a major plot-flaw The Christmas Train an avalanche and an inability The Christmas Train radio the dispatcher. I have a copy of Baldacci's book. It begins, "Tom Langdon was a journalist, The Christmas Train globe- trotting one, because it was in his blood to roam widely. In the children's television industry it was accepted that no one belted out the voices of goofy woodland creatures with greater flair and versatility than golden-piped Lelia Gibson. As proof, she had a shelf full of awards, an outrageously large income, and a healthy share of syndication rights. Tom and Lelia had The Christmas Train it off on an overnight flight from Southeast Asia to the States. At first he thought it might have been all the liquor they drank, but when that buzz burned off a couple hours out of LA, she was still beautiful and interesting—if a little ditzy and eccentric—and she still seemed attracted to him. He stayed over in California and they got to know each other even better. She visited him on the East Coast, and they'd been a comfortable if informal bi-coastal item ever since. It might seem strange that a successful Hollywood lady would go for a nomadic gent who ran through passports like water, could spout off funny if lewd phrases in thirty languages, and never would be financially secure. Yet Lelia had tired of the men in her circle. As she diplomatically explained it once, they were complete and total lying scum and unreliable to boot. Tom was a newsman, she said, so at least he occasionally dealt with the truth. She also loved his rugged good looks. He took that to mean the deep lines etched on his The Christmas Train from reporting in windswept desert climates with bullets flying. In fact his face was more often than not down in the sand in observance of local safety regulations. She listened with rapt attention to Tom's tales of covering major stories around the globe. For his part, he observed with admiration the professional way Lelia went about her loony-voice career. And they didn't have to live together year- round—a decided advantage, Tom believed, over the The Christmas Train hurdles facing couples who actually cohabitated. He'd been briefly married but had never had kids. Today his exwife wouldn't accept a collect call from him if he were hemorrhaging to death on the street. He was forty-one and had just lost his mother to a stroke; his father had been dead for several years. Being an only The Christmas Train, he was truly alone now, and that had made him introspective.     David Baldacci Interview 1) Your first books published were all standalone novels and now you have three different series running. What brought about the change of direction? I think it was a desire to bring certain characters back. First were the King & Maxwell stories where I had so much more to tell. Women especially love Michelle Maxwell. 2) You have different styles for each individual series with Shaw being just one man, King and Maxwell a duo and the Camel Club a whole team of people. Did you intentionally choose these character sets or was it just the way the books arose? It was the way things worked out for all the series. The Camel Club is an ensemble around Oliver Stone with each character having different skill sets. 3) You have also written some gentler almost literary novels such as One Summer and The Christmas Train. What is your opinion of the divide between crime fiction and literary novels? It’s a silly argument to have as readers read both styles / genres. The argument between the two helps neither camp. 4) In The Sixth Man which is your latest UK release you have Edgar Roy a character with a fantastic intellect who is used as a super analyst. Do such people exist in reality or is the whole premise your own creation. Some of it is my creation, but there really are people with an eidetic memory and I though what a really interesting idea for a character. 5) All of your books are intricately plotted and show clear evidence of lots of research.
