Two Visions of Spain in the 1950s: Eugene Smith and Brassaï In the nineteen fifties Spain caught the interest of a number of international photographers. Two specific projects are recalled here: Eugene Smith’s Spanish Village, a controversial feature with overt political intentions made for Life magazine, and Brassaï’s series Séville en fête made for Harper’s Bazaar, that proposes instead a picture of Spain halfway between the dream-like images indebted to Surrealism and the clichés of a tourist guide. extraordinary formal perfection, thanks to Smith’s painstaking way of composing his pictures in the manner of a stage director, and on the other it revealed the harshest aspects of Spanish reality, the subsist- ence economy, the Roman plough and the handcrafted distaff still in use, or the weight of authority symbolised by the two civil guards reproduced on a large scale by Life. Robert Frank published by Steidl The Robert Frank Project “The Robert Frank Project” is an ambitious long term publishing programme which encompasses Robert Frank’s complete oeuvre – reprints of his classic books, reprints of some less well known small books, the publication of previously unseen projects, newly conceived bookworks, and his Complete Film Works in specially designed col- lector’s DVD sets. This ensures the legacy of this original and seminal artist and that Robert Frank’s work will be available and accessible for many years to come in a sche- me and to a standard that the artist himself has overseen. The publication of a new edition of “The Americans” on 15th May, 2008, the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition, is the fulcrum of The Robert Frank Project. It presages a major touring exhibition and accompanying catalogue from the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., “Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans”, which opens in January 2009. This brochure contains details of all the books and films which are currently available and those planned for the future. Modern Group Portraits in New York Exile Community and Belonging in the Work of Arthur Kaufmann and Hermann Landshoff Burcu Dogramaci In the period 1933–1945 the group portrait was an important genre of art in exile, which has so far received little attention in research.1 Individual works, such as Max Beckmann’s group portrait Les Artistes mit Gemüse, painted in 1943 in exile in Amsterdam,2 were indeed in the focus. Until now, however, there has been no systematic investigation of group portraits in artistic exile during the Nazi era. The following observations are intended as a starting point for further investigations, and concentrate on the exile in New York and the work of the emigrated painter Arthur Kaufmann and photographer Hermann Landshoff in the late 1930s and 1940s, who devoted themselves to the genre of group portraits. 3 New York was a destination that attracted a much larger number of emigrant artists, writers, and intellectuals than other places of exile, such as Istanbul or Shanghai. A total of 70,000 German-speaking emigrants who fled from National Socialism found (temporary) refuge in New York City, including—among many others—the painters Arthur Kaufmann and Lyonel Feininger, and the photographers Hermann Landshoff, Lotte Jacobi, Ellen Auerbach, and Lisette Model.4 Such an accumulation of emigrated artists and photographers in one place may explain the increasing desire to visualize group formats and communal compositions. In the genre of the group picture there are attempts to compensate for the displacement from the place of origin.5 This mode of self-portrayal as a group can be 1/15 found in the photographic New York group portraits where the exiled surrealists had their pictures taken together or with their American colleagues. -

Two conservators, one specializing in furniture and woodwork and the other in paper-based collections, would review the museum's holdings and provide the organization a first assessment with which to plan for future preservation. Highlights of the collection include a Thomas Sully portrait of Madame Octavia LeVert, a portrait of actor Edwin Booth, and several personal items of James C. Calhoun, including his ink well and hair bracelet. The artifacts and archives support interpretive programs on the antebellum South for 4,000 visitors annually, as well as for students of public history, art history, and material culture at the University of Southern Alabama, Springhill College, and the University of Mobile.
