www.sports.wingate.edu 1 2011-12 WINGATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Wingate University women’s basketball team returns five starters and eight letter winners from last year’s NCAA Division II tournament team. In 2010-11, the Bulldogs earned a second-place finish in the SAC regular season and tournament races. Wingate opens the 2011-12 campaign Friday, facing Winston-Salem State in the Queen City Classic. Tip-off at Johnson C. Smith’s historic Brayboy Gymnasium is slated for 2 p.m.

“This year is no different than any other year,” Wingate head coach Barbara Nelson says. “We want to win the SAC and the NCAA regional tournament. Our eight returning players got a taste of the NCAA tournament last year. We want to do better this year.”

Nelson believes the 2011-12 edition of the Wingate Bulldogs has many strengths. “We are athletic and long on the perimeter,” Nelson says. “Our bench is very deep.” On the other side of the coin, Nelson feels Wingate has much work to do. “We need to become a better rebounding team,” she says. “We must stay committed to our defensive schemes…and stay healthy.”

Senior All-SAC guard Kurie Washington leads a talented group of returning players. Last season, Washington led the Bulldogs and ranked ninth in the SAC with 13.6 points per game. She reached 1,000 career points in Wingate’s victory at North Greenville last year.

“Kurie’s legs are better this year,” Nelson says. “She is always a deep threat. This year, she can get her shot off quicker. Kurie is great at attacking the basket.”

Both sophomore guard Janitsha Williams and Washington were named to the pre-season All-SAC team. “Janitsha can also shoot the long ball,” Nelson says. “Her rebounding and defense are big bonuses for us.” An All-SAC Freshman team member last year, Williams finished third on the team with 9.9 points per game. She was even better in conference games, averaging 11.1 points per contest.

Depth is a plus for the Bulldogs. Junior Sarah Wollett joins Washington and Williams at . “Sarah is our best pure shooter,” Nelson says. Wollett averaged 9.0 points per game last season, fourth on the Bulldog charts. Her 35 three- field goals were second to Washington’s 36. Wollett will see time at both point guard and shooting guard this season.

Point guards Tiffany Brown and Nikki Burton give Wingate many options in the backcourt. “Tiffany is a great defensive stopper,” Nelson says. “She has worked hard to improve her shooting as well.”

Brown started 21 of Wingate’s 30 games last year, contributing 6.9 points per game. She led the Bulldogs with 43 steals. Burton joins the Wingate family as a transfer from the University of Louisville. “Nikki is very difficult to guard in the open court,” Nelson says. “She is a point guard who can post up…she gives us much flexibility in our line-ups.”

“Our freshmen shooting guards have been tremendous surprises for us in pre-season,” Nelson says. “Jakari Thompson plays good defense and runs the floor well. Sarah Burnick finishes well around the basket. She is very smart with a good basketball IQ.” Sophomore transfer Cayleigh Weekly (Peace) will also be in the mix at the guard positions. Weekly played her prep basketball for Wingate alum Ina Thompson at Porter Ridge High School. “Cayleigh’s experience will pay big dividends for us,” Nelson notes.

Burton, Wollett and freshmen Kelli Bonner, Jasmine DeBerry and Jade Montgomery will run the show from the point guard position. “Kelli is a skilled point guard who can shoot the ball,” Nelson says. “Jasmine brings tenacity and great defensive skills to our team.” A Piedmont High School product, Montgomery is an All-SAC women’s soccer player who joined the basketball team once her magical season concluded. “Jade’s gift is her defensive pressure on the ball,” Nelson says.

In the post, senior forward Simone Rutledge was named to the pre-season All-SAC team. Rutledge was second on the Bulldog team charts with her 10.2 points per game last year. She led Wingate with 6.7 rebounds per game. “Simone is our floor general,” Nelson says. “She can run the floor and hit the three-pointer. Simone is doing good things for us.”

Junior forward Tish Logan was second on the team with her 5.4 rebounds per game last year. She started 19 contests. “Tish is in phenomenal shape,” Nelson says. “She is a great defensive rebounder.” Classmate Jecia Anderson is “in the best shape of her Wingate career,” Nelson says. “Jecia is working hard and moving well; we are seeing a different player.”

Sophomore Chantal Dunbar averaged 4.4 points per game last season. She started seven of her 30 games. “Chantal is creating steals with her defensive pressure,” Nelson says. “She rebounds well in our defensive schemes.”

Freshmen Brooklyn Boston and Sequoia Morton bring many fine attributes to the Bulldog table. “Brooklyn is leaps and bounds ahead of where the coaching staff thought she would be (at this point),” Nelson says. “She finishes well around the basket…and can hit the 15-footer.”

“Sequoia is a very long defensive player,” Nelson says. “She is the fastest post player we have. Sequoia runs and hustles…and recovers well on the defensive end.”

The Bulldogs play defending national champion Clayton State in December. Wingate will also face Lander at Clayton State’s post-Christmas tournament. Wingate plays conference foes Lincoln Memorial (Nov. 30) and Carson-Newman (Dec. 3) during the first semester. Wingate opens its home slate Tuesday, Nov. 22, hosting UNC Pembroke.

www.wingatebulldogs.com 3 2011-12 WINGATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Barbara Nelson took the Wingate University women's basketball team to the NCAA Division II play-offs following a very successful 2010-11 season. The Bulldogs were 19-11 overall, finishing second in both the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament. In her four seasons, Nelson's teams have compiled an overall record of 77-43 (40-25 in the South Atlantic Conference).

In 2010-11, Wingate led the SAC in team and three-point percentages. In addition, the Bulldog defense topped the SAC charts in team field goal percentage defense. Wingate junior guard Kurie Washington was named All-SAC and NCCSIA All-State first team. Newcomer Janitsha Williams was named to the All-SAC Freshman team.

Nelson has international coaching through USA Basketball. After leading the USA to a perfect 5- 0 record and gold medal in the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, Nelson helped the USA take the crown at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in Toulouse and Rodez, France. In 2010, USA Basketball named Nelson Co-Developmental Coach of the Year.

The Bulldogs gave Nelson many memories during her first season as head coach for the Wingate women's basketball team. Wingate advanced to the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Elite Eight as champions of the South Atlantic Region. The Bulldogs (26-8 overall) completed the 2007-08 season as the 10th-ranked team in the country, according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA NCAA Division II top 25 coaches' poll. Wingate also won the Food Lion SAC tournament on the way to the Elite Eight.

Prior to joining the Wingate family, Nelson was the head varsity girls' basketball coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte. She compiled a 437-176 record with seven NCISAA state championships in 21 seasons with the Chargers. PDS was named the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champions five times. In addition, Providence Day won the CISAA basketball conference crown nine times under Nelson's watch.

In 2006-07, Nelson led the Chargers to a 30-4 overall record, a state title and a conference championship. The Charlotte Observer named Nelson its girls' basketball Coach of the Year for her efforts, the fourth time she received this prestigious honor. Nelson com- piled a winning record in 19 of her 21 seasons with the Chargers. The 30 wins were a career-best for Nelson. In 2011, PDS inducted Nelson to its Charger Hall of Fame.

Barbara Nelson has deep ties to the South Atlantic Conference. She is a graduate of Presbyterian College with a B.S. degree in Psychology. A four-year letter winner in basketball for the Blue Hose, Nelson served two years on the Scotsman Club board for her alma mater. In September 2009, Nelson received the Bob Waters Award at Presbyterian's homecoming festivities. The Bob Waters Award is presented to PC graduates who have exhibited outstanding leadership and service as coaches and who personify the qual- ities possessed by this distinguished Presbyterian alumnus.

The accolades her Providence Day players have received could fill several scrapbooks. Konecka Drakeford was a two-time Parade All-American (1991 and 1993). Drakeford was the NCAA Division II Player of the Year her senior season at Johnson C. Smith University.

Both Drakeford and Natasha Brackett were named the Gatorade N.C. Player of the Year and N.C. Miss Basketball in 1993 and 2001, respectively. Brackett (Auburn) is one of four former Chargers to sign NCAA Division I scholarships. Drakeford (Israel and Turkey) and Brackett (Israel) have played professionally as well. Nelson coached three players who signed SAC scholarships. Nelson is very active on the national scene. A 14-year participant in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Nelson was a high school All-American selection committee member in 2006-07. She has been a Nike Basketball Camp Director from 1999 to the present.

She coached AAU basketball (boys and girls) from 1986 until 2007. Nelson was an assistant coach for an AAU 18 and under state and national championship team in 1986. She has coached the Charlotte Royals (boys), Charlotte Monarchs, Carolina Comets and N.C. Flight. Nelson spent two years as a floor coach for the WNBA Charlotte Sting during open and free-agent tryouts.

A much-in-demand clinician, speaker and student of the game, Nelson has worked and attended camps and clinics at Charlotte, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Lipscomb, Gardner-Webb and Wingate. The NCAA Division II community is recog- nizing her knowledge, as she served a stint on the WBCA's Board of Coaches who vote on the USA TODAY ESPN weekly top 25 coaches' poll.
