Brevard Live October 2012 - 9 BMA Winners

Where do I start? There was so much energy between the performers on stage and the colorful audience, it was overwhelming at times. Everybody was part of the show. People came all decked out. The ladies wore beautiful dresses, and there were some interest- ing suits. Best of all: despite of the stormy and rainy weather all day, the gala was packed and everyone was ready for a good time. They certain- ly got what they expected - and a bit more.

The show started with the National An- them sung with a lot of soul by Sybil PAUL BENDER MARK HEALY Gage. But leave it up to Chris Long Favorite Vocalist 2012 Favorite Guitarist 2012 to surprise us with a follow-up perfor- mance of “We’re an American Band” with the house band which comprised Joe Calautti, Tom Willett, Sam Hill and Steve Mazzi. - Just in case you didn’t know, Chris has been the singer of the legendary rock band Dead Se- rios for decades, and his introduction was quite powerful.

To give away some awards can be a draggy show with lots of “Thank You’s to my wife and my mother” etc. But not this one. Chris Long kept it mov- ing and the recipients of the awards RANDY FORREST proved once again that each of them deserved the title of being a “favorite Favorite Drummer 2012 BRYAN KEZER entertainer.” They were funny, impres- sive, gracious, and glamorous - it’s Favorite Keyboard 2012 amazing what Brevard County’s mu- sic community has to offer.

To make it clear one more time: The awards were given to “Brevard’s Fa- vorite” bands and musicians deter- mined by online voting of Brevard Live Magazine readers and local mu- sic fans. The lifetime achievement awards are given out by Brevard Live Magazine. This year the Ambassador Award went to The Supercats for their intensive touring taking their original music all over the US. hen the BMA show was over, there was one band that walked away with three awards W- The Supercats! Favorite Original Band, Fa- vorite Keyboard, and an Ambassador Achievement Award. Take a closer look and you find out that these awards are tightly connected to Supercat Bryan Kezer, the musician who often stands in the shadow of glamorous front-lady Simone. In fact, Bryan was so surprised about the sudden spotlight that he ran to the stage, took the award for Favorite Keyboardist and was gone before anyone could snap a decent photo. “I didn’t see it coming,” he told Brevard Live Magazine when we sat down with him and Simone to talk about original music.

Bryan has been a Supercat since 2003 when he teamed up with Mark Benedix for an acoustic duo playing lots of cover tunes and some originals. He met Simone in 2007 at another acoustic jam that he hosted together with Dave Brockway. Bryan liked Simone and her music but it wasn’t until 2009 that these two musician friends decided to form a band that focuses on writing music. Simone who grew up in Detroit has always been about her own music. In the late 90s she attracted some attention Photos by Jesse Hearndon with her original dance and techno-house style and traveled to Europe where this music was rather popular. Start Of Brevard County’s 2nd Annual ORIGINAL Music Series

his is the second year Brevard Live Productions showcases Original Music in this county. While Tscouting out the scene with the help of Sam Rece of www.harborcitymusic.com, we were at awe about the diversity, creativity and talent we found. 18 bands were October 16th, 8:30 pm: Pipes of Pan invited to showcase their original sound every Tuesday for 10 weeks starting on October 9th on the stage at Lou’s Blues in Indialantic. If you love music, this is where you’ll be.

To those of you who enjoy live entertainment on an evening out around town - Original Music is a different genre. It is an effort to produce new songs, new sounds. It is the evolution of music. It is also the expression of each generation through music. This is interesting stuff. At the end of the showcase four finalists will be selected by independent judges to perform in the Battle of the Bands on Sunday, January 20th. The winner will receive a $2,000 package of promotional services supplied by ArtLab, Florida Discount Music and others TBA. The prize is to support this band to introduce its original music. October 16th, 10:30 pm: Mad Martigan The series is held with the intent to bring new bands to a broader audiences who like music but might not be aware about what’s brewing in the underground. No admission charge.

The showcase series will open on Tuesday, October 9th, with The Supercats, the band that won the title Favorite Original Band for the second time at the Brevard Live Music Awards last August. With 6 CDs under their belt, they have enough music to fill an entire night with original Supercat-sound, so we decided to let them do just that. (Read article on page 17.) The following Tuesday, October 16th, we have two bands on the bill: Pipes of Pan (8:30 pm) and Mad Martigan (10:30 pm). Both bands are fairly new but the members are no newcomers to the music scene. Mad Martigan: Their sound is dynamic, punchy, me- lodic, and thick, and heavily influenced from classic rock and early punk. They’re at work on their debut album, being recorded in Jason’s home studio. Their members are guitar- Oct. 23rd, 8:30 pm-12:30 am: Jimbo & The No Shows ist/effects wizard Jason Anz, bassist (and fellow mad scien-

The members are A.K. Stanfield, guitarist/ vocalist/songwriter; Sharon Stanfield, keyboards and back- ing vocals; Shawn King, drums, harmonica, and backing vocals; Glen Rohrer, bass; and DrewB on percussion and backing vocals. On Tuesday, October 23rd, Jimbo & The No Shows will take the stage for the entire night. This group of tal- ented artists has a unique alternative sound and they are al- ready busy playing it around town. Jimbo performs original music with acoustic partner Wade Vargo. Clemens Nijhof on bass guitar and Monety Oatney on drums round out the complete band for the group’s electric performances.

HEAVY METAL NIGHT! October 30th, 8:30 pm: Lydia Can’t Breathe I bet you didn’t see that coming! The metal scene in Brevard County is amazing and we want to flaunt it. Tuesday, Octo- ber 30th, the day before Halloween, seems to be a perfect date for the most incredible metal show in the county. Lou’s Blues will be decorated as a horror mansion for its legend- ary “Hal-LOU-Ween” which is a cool setting for a metal show. Put on your ghoul and enjoy some hard-edged noise from two impressive bands: Lydia Can’t Breathe is a local band that has taken their sound all over the Southeast with an intense touring sched- ule. The members are Kyle Bolduc (Vocals, Guitar) Dan Wilson (Guitar) Shad Roundy (Bass, Backup Vocals) Josh Runfeldt (Drums). Formed in 2005 they have made a lot of noise in the metal scene. By the way, these aggressive sounding metalists are known for their funny personalities. Go figure. Who Was I was nominated for Favorite Original Band in this year’s Brevard Live Music Awards contest. At the After Party Jam a vocalist jumped on the stage and started belting it out leaving the audience at awe. At the end of the songs October 30th, 10:30 pm: Who Was I people were screaming “Who are you! What’s your band!” He yelled back: “Who Was I... Who Was I!” That was singer Darin from Who Was I. The Column By Chuck Van Riper

My Nose Hurts

hinking about the time when I was a youngster back Tin the Mesozoic era, I’m often reminded of the words of my Sicilian uncle. Uncle Tony was a big guy, some- one you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. When our families got together, sometimes our cousins, along with my brother and I, would get a tad.. uh.. shall we say… rambunctious. We’d be raising all kinds of hell, at which point Uncle Tony would storm into the room, waiving his fist in our faces, asking the proverbial question: “Yo! You want your nose on the right side of your face or the left side of you face?!” This, of course, implying that if we didn’t get our act together, he’d punch us in the nose so hard it would end up in one of the aforementioned places, neither of which sounded good to me. We didn’t like ei- ther choice. I think many people feel the same way about this year’s presidential election. Many Republicans didn’t want Mitt and there was an ever growing “anything BUT Mitt” movement. The prob- lem with Romney being he wasn’t conservative enough for the hardcore tea-baggers, and too wishy-washy for conventional Republicans. He’s flip-flopped so many times on so many issues. This can be evidenced by his recent views on health care. He went from obliterating all of “Obamacare” to saying “well, there are certain things I would keep.” He thinks the middle class is anyone who makes between $200-250,000. Really?! He thinks giv- ing gazillionaires another tax break will fix the economy because they are the “job creators.” I always thought it was “we the consumers” who are really the job creators. After all, if I go downtown and support our local shops, doesn’t that help keep their jobs? And don’t even get me started on his social views! Anyway, even the hardcore Republicans are disillusioned with Mitt. On the other side we have Obama. Many of those in the Democratic camp feel that he didn’t do enough. He didn’t accomplish the things he said he was going to do. Personally, I’m pissed that no one was held respon- sible for the economic collapse, the people responsible for two illegal wars, costing trillions, were not put on trial for treason, the piece of crap legislation called “The Pa- triot Act” was never fully repealed, the tax code wasn’t reformed, and the list goes on.

The problem with this situation is that both parties are beholding to the corporations and super pacts that put them there. The solution to the problem is to vote for people who have no affiliation to either of these entities. There are other options. Now before you say “argghhh.. that’s just throwing your vote away.” - NO IT’S NOT! If everybody who said that he/she would look at ALL the candidates and vote for who they truly believe in, we could end this two party conundrum. Consider the words of John Adams: “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in op- position to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” For example, for you disenfranchised Republicans out there, you might consider former Rep. Virgil Goode. He’s an attorney who was a Democrat, Republican, and an Independent. This year he’s running for president rep- resenting the Constitution party. Then there’s the Liber- tarian (always a favorite of mine) Gary Earl Johnson, the former two-term Governor of New Mexico. His leanings are very Ron-Paul-esque. There are plenty of choices we could be making. Just because somebody can’t spend billions on a campaign, doesn’t mean they should be discounted. I don’t think “he who has the most money wins” was exactly what our founding fathers had in mind. Maybe it’s time to break the two party monopoly! Check out www.voteagainstthemachine.com/index.html and remember, try to keep your nose in the middle of your face!

Brevard Live October 2012 - 31 On The Flip Side

Spreading the love by Christopher Long s many Brevard Live readers are aware, I have a true passion for politics. In fact, it’s been in Amy blood since I was a ten-year-old, collecting presidential trading cards during the 1972 campaign sea- son. But to be honest, even I recognize that we often take the game a bit too seriously. Despite maintaining my well-acknowledged, unwav- ering alliance to the Republican Party, I also can admit to certain realities. I’ve never been an Obama supporter. Sure, he seems like he’d be fun to hang with at a tailgate party, but as a president, he’s failed. And although I do wholeheartedly support Mitt Romney, I believe that un- less something truly wacky transpires, my team is gonna lose in a squeaker come November. See, I just said that, and oddly the planet didn’t burst into flames. There are those who gleefully typecast conservatives as uncaring. However, I for one, put people before poli- tics. America currently faces incredible challenges to be sure. And as I’ve written extensively over the last several months, I believe that if our nation truly is going to get back on track we must immediately put aside partisan bickering and rhetoric and start showing each other some kindness, compassion – and most of all, a whole lotta love. But sadly, many people from both sides of the fence

32 - Brevard Live October 2012 are missing this very crucial point. It’s seemingly more important to be right at all costs – even if that involves personally attacking each other. Moreover, there is a perception that the left must hate the right and vice versa. Recently, I hosted the Brevard Live Music Awards ceremony and per MY request one of the guest presenters was well-known Brevard Live liberal columnist Chuck Van Riper. Given my right-wing sensi- bilities, audience members gasped as Chuck approached the podium. Little did they know that he and I have been friends for many years. And after an orchestrated play- ful banter, we embraced each other and danced together center stage. I even grabbed his butt in the process. It was quite a hoot and the audience seemed to get a kick out of me kissing Chuck on the cheek as I stepped back from the podium. Connection made. I also recently reviewed a Florida concert appearance by a legendary British rock band. Through my research for the article, I (wrongly) felt that I had connected person- ally with one of the group’s members. We’d even become Facebook “friends,” “connected” on LinkedIn and a link to my review remained on this person’s website for days following its online publication. However, after taking a closer look at some of the political content on my blog, the musician reached out to me personally to ask that I cease any further contact with them – strictly based on the “left/right” issue. All other aspects or value of my work found on my blog were overlooked by this supremely tal- ented individual who I’ve so greatly admired – bummer. Connection missed. In sum, we all have different opinions and perspec- tives – that’s what makes this country great. And we shouldn’t shy away from articulating our beliefs and pas- sions. But instead of concentrating on our opposing points of view, I suggest that we focus on our common denomi- nators. In the end, it’s about connecting, not condemning.
