Matalin Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow, 129278 Russia e-mail: [email protected] Received April 12, 2006 Abstract—An original classification of the life cycles of ground beetles from Western Palaearctic is proposed. The classification is based on a combination of five criteria: duration, number of generations per season, phenology of reproduction, stability, and repeatability of reproduction. According to the individual lifespan, the cycles are subdi- vided into annual and biennial ones. The annual life cycles may be uni- and bivoltine, whereas biennial ones are always univoltine. By the time of reproduction, winter-spring, spring, spring-summer, early summer, summer, late summer, summer-autumnal, autumnal, autumn-winter, winter, and aseasonal species are distinguished. The biennial and bivoltine cycles may be of both facultative and obligate nature. Species living only one season and having a continuous reproductive period are designated as semelparous, while those breeding during two or more years or having several distinct periods of reproduction in one season, as iteroparous. By now, 30 variants of life cycles in Carabidae from western Palaearctic have been established. Repeated similarly directed modifications of the life cy- cle may produce essentially different seasonal rhythms in some individuals. In this case, two subpopulation groups usually appear within the population. Under the most unfavorable conditions, these groups become practically iso- lated and hibernate at different ontogenetic stages. -

We studied the impact of low-density grazing on arthropod diversity in a small wetland (7 ha) in South Germany. The location was abandoned for 20 years, and was then grazed by Galloway for 4 to 5 years. The study site included the following habitat types: open land, a stand of alder (Alnus glutinosa), a stand of willows (Salix spec) and alder and a brookside. We counted higher species numbers on grazed than on neighbouring abandoned areas in ground beetles, rove beetles and spiders. Grazing explained a considerable amount of the variance of the species composition, and species typical for grazed plots could be identified. We found higher frequencies of insects during winter in Cirsium stems from grazed than from ungrazed areas. Grasshoppers and katydids (Saltatoria) of the grazed open land showed a general trend of increasing species number during the study period. Our findings show that low density grazing by cattle can favour habitat diversity even in small areas which enhances species numbers. -

The patterns of seasonal activity, sex and age structure, reproductive characteristics and overwintering distribution of Amara fulva were studied in the southwest forest zone of the East European plain. A total of 1212 adults (664 males and 548 females) and 38 larvae were collected using pitfall traps. All adults were dissected to determine their reproductive condition. 185 larvae and 5 adults were collected by sampling soil. Adults of A. fulva were active from the first half of June until October with a single peak of activity in August. From June only postgenerative and newly emerged beetles were caught in traps. Immature and mature adults were recorded from the second half of July. At the end of August, more than 90% of the population was represented made up of mature adults. Imma- ture individuals were trapped up until October after which they overwintered. Oviposition period lasted 11 weeks (from the mid-July to the end of September). Maximum number of mature eggs in ovaries was recorded in the second half of August. Larvae of A. fulva were caught from the second half of August to October and the peak in their subsoil activity was recorded in the first half of September. -

Zool. Fennici 39: 131–149. Forestry has altered the boreal fl ora and fauna strongly during the 1900s. At present, logging methods other than clear-cutting are often applied but the ecological effects of these modifi cations are poorly studied. I collected carabid beetles in 8 uncut, 8 thinned (10%–30% of trees removed, with the aim of generating an uneven age structure) and 8 clear-cut, spruce-dominated stands, by using pitfall traps in central Finland during 1995–1998. The carabid species fell into three distinctive ecological groups in the multivariate analyses: forest, open-habitat and Sphagnum bog species. The forest species further formed a continuum from forest specialists to canopy- closure generalists. Logging affected the forest species slightly, while generalists and open-habitat species benefi tted from clear-cutting. Thinning maintained the forest-fl oor carabid assemblage well. Site characteristics, such as the amount of trees and bottom and fi eld-layer vegetation, were important determinants of carabid assemblages. -

River ecosystems are subject to high anthropic influence: as a result the channel morphology is changed, swamps are drained, floodplains are built up, and rivers are polluted. All this has radically changed the environment for the inhabitants of the floodplains, including riparian stenotopic species. Although riparian arthropods are oriented primarily to the production of hydro-ecosystems, the type of water body—lentic or lotic—has a determining effect in the structure of communities. Most riparian arthropods have evolutionarily adapted to riverbanks with significant areas of open alluvial banks. This paper considered the structure of assemblages of ground beetles associated with the riverbanks and the shores of floodplain lakes and their differences. The banks of rivers and the shores of floodplain lakes were considered separately due to the differences in the habitats associated with them. -
