Luciano Spalletti returns to Italy as his FC Zenit St Petersburg side visit AC Milan for their concluding Group C fixture looking to seal third place and entry into the UEFA Europa League. • Zenit are currently tied on four points with RSC Anderlecht, with whom they have an identical head-to-head record although Zenit hold the edge on goal difference, and they require a better result than the Belgian champions manage at Málaga CF to make sure of their progress. • By contrast, Milan – who inflicted Zenit's first European home defeat since 2008 when winning 3-2 in Russia in October – are already sure of second place and a fourth successive last-16 appearance. Match background • Milan are looking for their first home victory in Group C having posted two draws to date. Zenit have lost both away fixtures without scoring; their only UEFA Champions League victory on the road in eight attempts came at FC BATE Borisov during their 2008/09 debut campaign. • Zenit have never won in Italy, where they suffered two defeats in 2008/09. They fell 1-0 at Juventus in their first match in the UEFA Champions League in September 2008, then lost 2-0 at Udinese Calcio in the UEFA Cup round of 16 the following spring. • Vyacheslav Malafeev, Aleksandr Anyukov, Danny, Igor Denisov, Viktor Fayzulin, Roman Shirokov and Konstantin Zyryanov featured in one or both of those games. • The only time Zenit avoided defeat in Italy was in a 2-2 draw at Bologna FC in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round, but they still lost the tie 5-2 overall. • Milan last hosted Russian opponents in 2002/03 when beating FC Lokomotiv Moskva 1-0 in that season's second group stage, en route to winning the trophy. Prior to that they twice faced FC Spartak Moskva at San Siro in the 1970s, earning a draw and a win. Team ties • Spalletti and his Milan counterpart Massimiliano Allegri both played, at different times, for amateur side UC Cuoiopelli. Both from Tuscany, they were born 80km apart, in Certaldo and Livorno respectively. • As coaches in Serie A, the pair crossed swords only in 2008/09. Spalletti's Roma beat Allegri's Cagliari Calcio 3-2 with a last-minute goal at the Stadio Olimpico and then came from two down to earn a 2-2 away draw. • Spalletti has a record of three wins from four Serie A visits to Milan with Roma. His overall record against the Rossoneri with Roma was W5 D2 L1. Philippe Mexès was with him throughout his four years in Rome. • With Udinese – where he was coach in 2001 and again from 2002 to 2005 – Spalletti's Serie A record against the Rossoneri was: W2 D2 L3. • Spalletti also coached Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, AC Venezia and AC Ancona in Italy. • Domenico Criscito played for Genoa CFC and Juventus and was a team-mate of Marco Amelia and Stephan El Shaarawy at Genoa in 2009/10. • Criscito has played for Italy alongside Ignazio Abate, Riccardo Montolivo, Antonio Nocerino and Giampaolo Pazzini. • Shirokov (2) and Aleksandr Kerzhakov scored as Russia overcame Montolivo and Nocerino's Italy 3-0 in a Zurich friendly on 1 June. Denisov, Malafeev and Zyryanov also played for Russia. • Kerzhakov was a substitute in the Sevilla FC side beaten 3-1 by Milan in the 2007 UEFA Super Cup. • Aleksandar Luković spent four seasons with Udinese, including a loan spell at Ascoli Calcio. He played alongside Cristián Zapata in Udinese's 2008/09 tie against Zenit, appearing in the second leg. • Sergei Semak and Mario Yepes were team-mates at Paris Saint-Germain FC from 2005 to 2006. • Semak played in Russia's 1-0 reverse at Italy in a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off. With PFC CSKA Moskva he lost 3-2 at Parma FC in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup first round despite scoring twice and was in the FC Rubin Kazan team beaten 2-0 by FC Internazionale Milano in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Milan UEFA Champions League statistics • Milan have scored 399 goals in the European Cup. • At 19 years and 342 days, Stephan El Shaarawy became Milan's youngest UEFA Champions League goalscorer when he struck against Zenit on matchday two. • Philippe Mexès serves a one-game ban after collecting his third yellow card of the group stage on matchday five; Daniele Bonera and Riccardo Montolivo will incur a suspension with their next bookings. Miscellaneous • Kevin-Prince Boateng scored (56) before being sent off (90) as Milan came from behind to beat Calcio Catania 3-1 on Friday. The home side were down to ten men for the last 41 minutes. • El Shaarawy struck twice, taking his tally to 18 goals in 21 games for club and country this season. • Of the 31 goals Milan have scored this season in all competitions, 22 have come after half-time. • Ignazio Abate (thigh) has not played since matchday four, while Bonera is out with a similar injury. • A Robinho penalty earned Milan a 1-0 win against Serie A leaders Juventus on 25 November; Montolivo captained the side for the first time. • The Rossoneri have lost four times in eight league games at San Siro this term. They only suffered two home reverses in each of the two previous Serie A campaigns. • Milan lost six of their first 14 Serie A fixtures, their worst start since suffering seven defeats from 13 in 1941/42. • El Shaarawy, who made his competitive debut for Italy last month, scored his first international goal in the Azzurri's 2-1 friendly defeat by France on 14 November. Zenit UEFA Champions League statistics • Zenit have only won one of their 11 away games in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying included. • Zenit's 1-0 success against RSC Anderlecht and FC Spartak Moskva's 2-1 triumph over SL Benfica made matchday three the first UEFA Champions League matchday on which two Russian clubs registered victories. • Zenit's 3-0 loss at Málaga CF on matchday one equalled their heaviest away defeat in the competition. • Vyacheslav Malafeev and Aleksandr Kerzhakov have played every minute of Zenit's group campaign. • Vladimir Bystrov is banned after his matchday five red card; Bruno Alves, Aleksandr Anyukov, Viktor Fayzulin and Roman Shirokov will incur a suspension with their next bookings. Miscellaneous • Axel Witsel's first two goals for Zenit helped them to a 4-2 win at FC Spartak Moskva on Friday, a game the hosts ended with nine men after Nicolas Pareja (69) and Juan Insaurralde (90+3) were dismissed. • Fayzulin went off with a knock on 32 minutes on Friday. • Shirokov was on target at Spartak, his eighth goal for club and country this season – all coming after half-time. • Zenit drew 1-1 at home with PFC CSKA Moskva on 26 November in Danny's first game since taking over the captaincy from Malafeev. • Zenit were handed a 3-0 forfeit defeat after their game at FC Dinamo Moskva on 17 November was abandoned after objects were thrown on to the pitch. • Defeat by Anderlecht on matchday four ended Zenit's run of six straight victories in all competitions, their best sequence since winning ten in succession between April and July 2010. • does not expect Domenico Criscito to play again this year because of a knee injury sustained in the 2-1 win at FC Volga Nizhny Novgorod on 11 November. • Zenit will host FC Kuban Krasnodar in the Russian Cup quarter-finals on 17 April.

AC Milan: Massimiliano Allegri Date of birth: 11 August 1967 Nationality: Italian Playing career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), Cagliari Calcio, AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923 Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AC Milan • A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before heading back to Livorno. • Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals under Giovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari, Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003. • Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he won the Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion. • Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, this time as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan. • Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. In January 2012 he extended his contract until June 2014.

FC Zenit St Petersburg: Luciano Spalletti Date of birth: 7 March 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: AC Entella Chiavari 1914, Spezia Calcio 1906, FC Esperia Viareggio, Empoli FC Coaching career: Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio (twice), Ancona Calcio, AS Roma, FC Zenit St Petersburg • An industrious midfielder in his playing days, he started his coaching career in 1993/94 with former club Empoli and enjoyed immediate success with successive promotions. • After a good first campaign in the top flight, Spalletti left to join Sampdoria but was sacked 28 games into the 1998/99 season. • Had brief stays at Venezia, Udinese and Ancona but returned to Udinese in summer 2002, steering them to sixth and seventh-placed finishes before guiding them into the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2004/05. This success persuaded Roma to approach Spalletti, and he signed a two-year contract. • In 2005/06 Roma set a record of consecutive Serie A wins (11) and finished fifth, with Spalletti subsequently named Serie A coach of the year. Guided the Giallorossi to Coppa Italia success in 2007 and 2008 and two UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. • After a difficult 2008/09, Spalletti resigned in September 2009, joining Zenit three months later on a three-year deal. Soon after he delivered their first Russian Cup in 11 years, and with his side going a record 23 games unbeaten from the start of the season, took the league title at the end of 2010, retaining it in the transitional 2011/12 campaign.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
