During the service Kenneth E. Pennell and Society President Herbert S Glasby, III read the Scriptures (Amos 7:7-8 and Philippians 4:8-9.) A modest number of Society members were present, some with their wives.

The Rev. Dr. George Gray Toole, one of the Society's Chaplains preached a sermon highlighting the life of Robert Erskine, who came to the colonies from Scotland and assisted the Revolutionary War efforts mightily.

At the conclusion of the service, the pipe band, with Pipe Major Edward C. McFarland leading, presented a number of tunes to the tapping feet (and occasional humming) of the congregation. On the way out, someone who attended the service was heard to say, "I don't go to this church, but I never miss the . . . Kirk' O' Th' Tartans!" Well done, lads!

The Almoner’s Report

Rev. Dr. George Gray Toole

"May the hinges of friendship never rust, and the wings of love never lose a feather." Dean Ramsay

We know what Dean Ramsay was getting at in this toast he offered at a dinner. He knew how important it is to keep friendship healthy. He obviously knows the dangers of friendships that aren't given regular attention. They creak like a struggling door, and don't "fly" the way they should. From my perspective, we are a healthy lot when it comes to friendships. I marvel at every gathering of the St. Andrew's Society of Baltimore at the warm greetings that are exchanged and the expressions of concern shown to one another.

As we continue in that pattern of friendship, here are a few folks who would enjoy contact from our members. The father of William C. Garrett. Jr. died, as did Bruce E. Shaw. Richard Lee Scrimger is recovering from a recent hospitalization. On a happier note, Pibroch editor, Stuart P. Blair and his wife, Bernadine, can't stop smiling over the birth of grandson, Declan Douglas Blair.

Yours aye in friendship, George

This is a preliminary announcement about the 38th Annual Burns Nicht Supper, which is scheduled for January 23, 2016. We will be returning to the Maryland Kirkin’ of the Tartan Club for the event. At this moment the price per person is still to be determined. It is my intent to not have an

St. Andrew’s Christian Community Church increase from last year and if possible perhaps a Sunday 18 October (Article on page 1) decrease. For you to understand it is difficult to obtain any substantial reduction in price unless one reduces the Perry Hall Presbyterian Church Sunday 15 November (Article on page 1) overall quality of the event. We have enjoyed the Maryland Club for many years because of its ambiance and quality of service. What can I say, a decent meal Emmuel Episcopal Church has not retreated in price; but ok, perhaps something Sunday 22 November (Article on page 1) can be changed.

I have one possibility to consider. In the dinner costs, Veterans Day * Korean War Memorial included are 4 bottles of wine per table. I can reduce the Wednesday 11 November wine to 3, 2 or no bottles. This means that if you wish to have wine or an additional glass with your meal, it may be purchased at the cash bar. Scottish Immigrant Erskine, ever the engineer, designed a tetrahedron- shaped marine cheval-de-frise, a defensive barrier to prevent warships from sailing upriver. It was installed Robert Erskine, 1735-1780 between the northern end of Manhattan and Fort “’s Map Maker” Lee, in 1776.

George Washington was impressed with Erskine from A Scottish inventor and the moment they met and in 1777 appointed him to the engineer who came to the post of Geographer and Surveyor General of the British Thirteen Colonies in Continental Army. Following his appointment, Erskine 1771 to run drew more than 275 maps covering the northern sector the ironworks at Ringwood, of the war. Erskine drew more than 275 maps, mostly of the

Northeast region.

Born in Scotland, Erskine attended the University of

Edinburgh. As a young man, he started a business, but it failed. He invented the "Continual Stream Pump" and

"Platometer", a centrifugal hydraulic engine, and experimented with other hydraulic systems. He became known as an inventor and engineer of some renown in his native land.

Erskine also became active in civic issues and increasingly gained the respect of his community. In 1771 at the age of 36, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, a prestigious appointment in the scientific community.

In 1771, the owners of an ironworks near Ringwood, New Jersey, hired Erskine to replace Peter Hasenclever as ironmaster. The latter's profligate spending had nearly bankrupted the operation. Erskine immediately set about trying to make the operation profitable. His efforts were cut short by the American Revolutionary War. Erskine was sympathetic to the American cause, Mapping the Revolutionary War but worried that might he lose his workers to the army. He organized them into a militia and was appointed as a militia captain in August 1775.

Once the war broke out in earnest, the rebels were concerned that the British warships would go up the Hudson River to attack northern forts and separate New England from the rest of the colonies.
