CLOSING SPEECH BY MS SIM ANN, SENIOR MINISTER OF STATE FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION, AT THE SECOND READING OF THE POSTAL SERVICES (AMENDMENT) BILL ON 5 APRIL 2021 Introduction Thank you, Mr Deputy Speaker. I thank members for their support for this Bill, and for their questions on important issues that this Bill seeks to address. Members’ responses and questions fall into two broad themes, namely: i) What we are doing to ensure citizens and consumers can fully benefit from the deployment of the nationwide parcel locker network or the Network; and ii) What we are doing to enable businesses to reap productivity gains from the Network, while safeguarding it against cybersecurity threats. (A) Citizens/Consumers 2. Let me begin with the first theme, on providing a convenient, secure and inclusive Network that can be used by residents of all ages. Benefits to residents associated with the changes to the PSA 3. In my opening speech, I spoke about how the Network is an efficient solution that provides greater convenience and more options for parcel deliveries beyond doorstep delivery. 4. We note Mr Patrick Tay’s and Mr Gerald Giam’s queries about whether there are plans to deploy Pick’s lockers at private estates and condominiums. Parcel lockers can help achieve efficiencies in residential estates with sufficient density, and which are currently under-served. This is why Pick’s rollout plan is focused on HDB estates. Some private condominiums are already being served by a commercial parcel locker operator, who has agreed to join the Network. Pick will encourage its partners to expand their deployment wherever feasible, so that more locations, including private condominiums, can be served.

  • Parliamentary Reply by DPM Teo Chee Hean on Breakdown of Current and Projected Population Size
Parliamentary reply by DPM Teo Chee Hean on breakdown of current and projected population size THIRTEENTH PARLIAMENT OF SINGAPORE WRITTEN ANSWER TUESDAY, 4 APRIL 2017 Mr Gan Thiam Poh: To ask the Prime Minister (a) what is the current population of (i) Singaporeans and permanent residents (ii) foreign workers broken down by the different types of work passes and permits; and (iii) tourists and shortterm visit pass holders; and (b) what is the projected population of these persons for 2020. Mr Teo Chee Hean (for the Prime Minister): According to the latest consolidated figures published as at end June 2016: (a) (i) The resident population, comprised 3.41 million Singapore Citizens (SCs) and 0.52 million Permanent Residents (PRs), totalling 3.93 million. (ii) There were 1.67 million Non-Residents (NRs). Employment Pass Holders numbered 0.19 million, S Pass Holders 0.18 million, and Work Permit Holders 0.77 million. The rest of the NR population includes foreign domestic workers, dependants of SCs, PRs and work pass holders, and students. (iii) Tourists and short-term visit pass holders are not included in Singapore’s total population (5.61 million) as they are in Singapore only for a short period of time. (b) Based on the population estimates laid out in the 2013 Population White Paper, Singapore’s total population could be between 5.8 million and 6 million in 2020, depending on changes to our birth rates, life expectancy, and our social and economic needs. By then, the resident population (comprising SCs and PRs) could be about 4 million, of which SCs could make up about 3.5 million; the non-resident population then would number about 1.8 million..

Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, is the one who introduced her colleagues to these locally-designed clothes. Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development, wore a piece designed by Eileen Yap, 43, in collaboration with special needs teenagers. Eileen is the founder of “Singapore Fashion Runway”, a local social enterprise. The shirt’s design is based on Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid. In a Facebook post of himself wearing the customised costume, Mr Desmond Lee urged the public to support those with special needs through meaningful ways such as this. In fact, Mr Desmond Lee wasn’t alone in wearing works made by those with special needs at NDP. According to Eileen, the floral designs were drawn by Amirul and Farhana, students from the Mountbatten Vocational School. Singapore Fashion Runway then used their designs to produce the clothes.
