They were going so fast they might as well have been running. But there was a good reason for that. They were excited. They had just arrived at Leeds’s famous Bramley Carnival. Three children. And one dog. The dog was called Bailey. He was Mohammed’s mum’s dog, an ex-police dog. Bailey walked obediently alongside Mo, calm and at ease in the crowd. And what a crowd it was. Grace thought there must be a thousand people there at least. Eating burgers and candyfloss. Screaming on the ghost train and the roller-coaster. Some of them queueing calmly to have their faces painted by two teenage girls in a tent. ‘Seen him?’ the boy next to Grace said. Kian. Grace’s brother. Kian looked older than he was in his Nike baseball cap, trainers and tee-shirt. Grace wore a bow in her hair. She wasn’t into brands. Kian was pointing at a man. The man was thin.

  • Carnival Mini Royalty Chosen Ahead of Big Parade
MEDIA RELEASE MINI CARNIVAL ROYALTY CHOSEN AHEAD OF BIG PARADE August 20, 2013 Leeds, UK For immediate release Leeds West Indian Carnival 2013 got off to a flying start on Sunday with its annual Carnival Prince and Princess Show. Twelve year old Shaliece from Leeds wowed the judges to take the title with her Soca Salsa Princess costume design by Pareesha Webster for the Artistic Achievers Carnival Project which is funded by the Leeds Inner North East Area Committee. This is the second year in row as Carnival Princess for the delighted Shaliece whose costume was inspired by Brazil’s famed Rio Carnival. The Carnival Prince title went to 14 year old Reece Booth, also from Leeds in a mythically themed Flying Horse creation, designed by Sinclair Brown of Huddersfield. Shaliece and Reece will head up the annual Carnival Parade on Bank Holiday Monday alongside the Carnival King & Queen who will be chosen at a spectacular show at Leeds Town Hall this Friday 23rd August. Weather permitting, organisers anticipate crowds of around 100,000 to watch the Carnival’s mini-royals as they are joined by 10 Queen costumes, 4 King creations and hundreds of revelers in costumed troupes dancing to energetic soca music on floats for Monday’s parade. Europe’s longest running authentic Caribbean carnival leaves Potternewton Park in Leeds at 2pm, returning at 5pm for judging of costumes. To keep up to date with Carnival events and details follow @CarnivalLeeds or call 0113 307001. ENDS Image: (L-R) Leeds Carnival 2013 Prince, Reece Booth and Carnival Princess Shaliece Moore who will join Bank Holiday Monday’s spectacular annual parade.
