THE IRISH LAW TIMES and SOLICITORS’ JOURNAL A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER and GAZETTE OF LEGAL POSTINGS. VOLUME VI – 1872 Published by John Faconer, Dublin. 1872 The Randal Gill Library holds a copy of the Irish Law Times and Solicitors’ Journal published in 1872. (Ref D400/036). Contained within the book are lists of petitions in bankruptcy and insolvency filed or heard in Ireland during 1872. Along with lists of Law Students, eg: Edward Philips Johnson Trinity College Cambridge eldest son of Thomas Henry Johnson late of Ballymacash, Co Antrim (deceased) The lists contain the name and details of the student’s father and the position of the son in the family. Further information is given for Law Students admitted to Degree of Barrister-in-Law. John Baptist McHugh, Esq. BA Queen’s University fourth son of Edward McHugh of Belfast, Co Antrim. Merchant Births, Marriages, Deaths and obituaries of members of the legal profession are also included. There are Sheriff’s lists for all counties in Ireland for 1872 and notices for the sale of Landed Estates. Legal postings also contain useful information for the family historian, eg: Statutory Notice to Creditors In the matter of William Walter McCombe late of Ravenhill in the County of Down and Belfast in County Antrim, solicitor, deceased. High Court of Chancery Pursuant to an Order of the Lord Chancellor of Ireland, made in this Matter of Georgina Gray, Susan Agnes Gray, James Gray, William Gray and David Howard Gray, minors. The Creditors of William Gray late of Castle Place, Belfast and 177 Templemore Park, Ballymacarrot (sic) in Co Down. Cabinet Maker who died in or about the month of May 1869. I have compiled a list of the names of Insolvents filing for petition in 1872 in the North of Ireland and also the petitions filed for bankruptcy. The lists are alphabetical by surname and give the address and occupation of the petitioner. In the case of Insolvents I have stated whether the insolvent was discharged or remanded, if the case was heard in 1872. Examples: Petitions filed for Insolvents 1. He was listed as Justice of the Peace & Deputy Lieutenant of Co Down now a prisoner of debt. As this book is only for 1872 the cases heard at the beginning of the year give the name of the petitioner and the result of the hearing, however unfortunately the details of the petitioner appeared in the previous volume for 1871. Likewise, those whose petitions were filed towards the end of the year were to have their hearing in 1873.
