Situating the Word: the Significance of Christian Space for Evangelism
The Asbury Journal 62/1:79-94 © 2007 Asbury Theological Seminary Laceye WARNER Situating the Word· The Signijicance if Christian Space for Evangelism Abstract With Protestant denominational membership declining steadily, and at times dramatically, since the 1960s, numerous local churches eagerly search for ways to attract new members. In efforts to reverse this trend, or at least slow it down, many have turned to techniques more informed by market logic and capitalist ideologies than the triune God revealed in biblical texts. One such technique insists upon creating "gathering spaces" with little if any evidence of Christian identity. Not even the nomenclature (e.g. "gathering space" instead of "worship space" or "sanctuary") indicates the nature of the purposes intended for these spaces. Many conclude the more sterile and unmarked a space the more welcoming and, therefore, evangelistic it is. This essay begins with a brief proposal to more fully reclaim biblical foundations for evangelism. Through a canonical approach that reads the biblical texts theologically, a richer perspective of evangelistic understandings and practices emerges. Second, this essay explores one implication of such a canonical and theological approach. If the language and practices of the gathered community are constitutive for initiating and forming people in the Christian faith, might the space in which they gather be theologically significant? In this article I argue that recognizing and ordering the sacred character of a gathering space can lead to its significant role in Christian invitation and formation in contemporary communities of faith-thus situating the Word. Gender and Missionary Influence in Colonial Africa Nathan Nunn∗‡ Harvard University February 2012 Abstract: Using information on the locations of Catholic and Protes- tant missions during Africa’s Colonial period, I test whether Protes- tant and Catholic missionaries differentially promoted the education of males and females. I find that while both Catholic and Protestant missions had a positive long-run impact on educational attainment, the impacts by gender were very different. Protestant missions had a large positive impact on the long-run education of females and a very small impact on the long-run education of males. In contrast, Catholic missions had no impact on the long-run education of females, but a large positive impact on the education of males. These findings are consistent with the greater importance placed on the education of women by Protestants relative to Catholics. It is this form of life that gives a Christian the image of Christ which means that the person is a Christian. But diversity of denominations and the spate of Pentecostalism which emanate over the years against Jesus' instruction of being one, has mutilated Christian imageEvangelism is regarded as converting non-Christians to Christianity. It is the preaching of the gospel or the practice of giving information about a particular doctrine or set of belief to others with the intention of converting others to Christian faith. Preaching the word of God as it is done by some denominations cast a spell on Christianity as some of denominations do not follow Jesus' instruction laid down in the Scripture. Pentecostalism on its own may be a challenge sequel to the way some denominations see it. Jesus in John 17:21 says that the Church may be one even as he and the father are one. Denominationalism has defocus this prayer as it is referred to anything distinguishes by a name. Such names do not give room for a good understanding of Christianity as each denomination comes up with her own set of belief. This paper therefore, examines denominationalism and Pentecostalism in Evangelism, as they affect the image of Christianity. -

President of the Missionary Union of the Clergy Bshop Conforti's concern for the Church entrusted to him never distracted him from the “concern for those parts of the world where the Word of God had not yet been proclaimed.” He was convinced that the proclamation of the Gospel “ad gentes” (to the nations), was the most effective way of re-evangelizing his own people. He was untiring, therefore, in his commitment to mission evangelization and promotion, both through the work of his own missionary family, as well as supporting every missionary animation initiative in Italy and throughout the world. He was particularly committed to assisting in the foundation and spreading of the Pontifical Missionary Union of the Clergy of which he was the first president. In fact, in 1916 Guido Conforti got together with Fr Paolo Manna of the Pontifical Institute of Milan Missionary Society. The idea was to mobilize priests around the world to reawaken their awareness of having been ordained for the whole world and encourage them to heighten their people's commitment to spreading the Gospel. It was to be another legacy to the mission of the Church. The Bishop of Parma was almost like a magnet to those who felt the urgency of missionary formation of the people of God. The missionary heart of Fr. Manna, founder of PIME missionaries, had the intuition that only through the personal conversion of priests and bishops to the universal mission of the church, he could hope for a missionary re-launching. Bishop Conforti joined wholeheartedly the Missionary Union of the Clergy and helped organize and attended Mission Congresses throughout Italy: in Bergamo (1919, 1923), Rome (1920), Naples (1922), Modena (1923), and in particular in Palermo (1924) when he gave the key-note address on “The Eucharist and the Missions.” When Conforti retired from the Missionary Union of Clergy in 1927 as its first national president, the association was present in 44 Italian dioceses alone. -

Church of Greece: Yoga is Incompatible with Christian Faith By Philip Chrysopoulos - Jun 4, 2020 File photo The Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has decided that yoga has no place in the life of Christians because it is a fundamental part of the religion of Hinduism. The official decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting of the Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, chaired by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens. The Church of Greece was expressing its reaction to widespread media reports suggesting yoga techniques as a way of dealing with stress during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the context of respect for religious freedom guaranteed in Greece, but also of the pastoral responsibility of the Church for avoiding creating religious syncretism, the Church of Greece reminded Orthodox Christians that yoga is a fundamental part of the religion of Hinduism, not just simply a “kind of exercise.” Therefore, the Standing Holy Synod pointed out that yoga is “completely incompatible with our Orthodox Faith and has no place in the lives of Christians.” In addition to calling on Orthodox Christians to avoid practicing yoga, the Holy Synod also distributed a circular to the clergy and metropolitans of the Church of Greece to abstain from any event organized by the Rotary and Lions international organizations. According to the circular, these organizations are not only limited to social events, but also include religious acts, since they have a typical rite of passage for new members and use a prayer that is addressed vaguely to a God, in the general sense of the word and not according to the Orthodox Faith. -
