If the Plantations can’t go to Pink Silks then the Pinks Silks come to the Plantations. After cancellation due to extremely wet weather of the annual Pink Silks Ladies Charity Race Day, the residents of Plantations over 55’s lifestyle village were determined to still have some fun and contribute to this very worthwhile local charity. In 48 hours, residents Donna Grisedale & Diane Greenwood had organised food, entertainment, competitions, raffles and with the help of chair & co-founder of the charity, Tanya Johnson, loads of prizes. Raising $1000, the day was an amazing success, with sponsors and trainers Kris & Jim Jarvis and around 80 Plantations residents all happy to help the Pink Silks Perpetual Trust in their ongoing commitment to help local women challenged by cancer or illness.

WOOPI NEWS – WOOLGOOLGA AND THE NORTHERN BEACHES – ISSUE 18 – FEBRUARY 2021 – 27 Woopi that Was - Woolgoolga Picnic Race Days

Over a couple of beers, or maybe more, at a fashion parade fundraiser back in the 80s, a bunch of Woopi blokes decided they’d like to revitalise the Woolgoolga Picnic Races and raise money to help support our local retirement village hostel. Brian Taylor, Geoff Wiggins and Trevor Beaumont formed a committee with a few other locals, including Di Weeks, who Woopi News caught up with recently to find out more. The committee, included members of the Police Force, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Apex Club, Surf Club, VRO, Fishing Club, Sports Council and Hostel Fund Raising Committee.

The 1948 Woolgoolga Picnic Races Winner Mystery pictured here with Picnic races in Woolgoolga were popular back in Wally McPherson and Jockey Rusty McPherson the day, as the top photo shows. Horse racing on the beach has been celebrated since 1907, with the last known races being held in 1948. But one sunny day, Sunday October 15, 1989, the Woolgoolga Charity Picnic Beach Races were back on! This new revitalised version saw more stubbies and thongs than stockings and parasols. Over 7000 people attended the first of four annual race days, stretching along the foreshores and sands of our main beach and bringing people from all over the state to our little village. The weather and the sea were perfect and there was plenty of action all day and into the evening. The day started at 5.30am with a breakfast on the beach and a triathlon, followed by a fishing competition, a fish auction, novelty events and, at 12 noon, the Picnic Races began. In 1989 Sergeant Geoff Wiggins proudly shows both the new Tooheys Perpetual Trophy and the original 1907-1948 Beach Picnic Race Cup. An exciting nine-event program commenced. There was $3,000 in prize money and a Tooheys Perpetual Trophy for the winner of the Tooheys Cup, which was won by Miss Cathy Cunningham on ‘Scuppa’. It was 41 years since the last picnic races and the tension in the air on October 15 brought back memories to those old enough to remember, reminiscing and recalling all those years gone by. How “And they’re off...” great it was to have the races once With spectators watching from the foreshores, the sand and even from the ocean more. It was a crowd the likes of which Woolgoolga had never seen. They stayed on eating, drinking and dancing to the music of ‘Dingo Creek’ till 8pm. The crowd behaviour was excellent and everyone had a great day. A total of $18,000 was raised, less expenses. Businesses in Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour and Grafton, Tooheys, local clubs, the Police Department, Radio 2CS, Charity Queens, Racing Association, citizens of Woolgoolga and surrounding areas and the Picnic Race Day Committee came together as one to make this day a huge success. The community spirit was high and left many memories. There was fashion on the fields, banana throwing, tug of war contests, lots of

fun for the kids running races of the human kind, live music, fishing competitions, marathons and craft carnivals were held in conjunction with the races over the years. The charity races continued to run and raise money three more times - on December 2, 1990 and August 25, 1991 until the event of September 13, 1992, where the gaming squad from moved in and stopped the races, arresting the bookies and organisers just as the last race was about to start. This was of great surprise to the local police who were helping to support the races at the time. This saw the end of the Woolgoolga Picnic Race Days. As Di Weeks said “It was the gaming squad wearing the blinkers that day … as after all it was a Charity Picnic Race Day.

Corindi couple answers harvest call

With COVID-19 leading to massive labour shortages, retirees John and Shirley answered the call to help harvest fruit and have been enjoying every minute. The couple, both aged 72, raised a family in Coffs Harbour before moving to Corindi four years ago. They spend much of their spare time caravanning around the country. But when they started hearing calls for people to help with the berry harvest in the Coffs Harbour region they decided to give it a go. “On the news it was all about needing people to pick and we thought why don’t we try and help.
