The Dandy Annual is a particularly welcome occasion for traditionalists since the actual comic was cancelled insubsequently failed as an online edition and now only exists in the minds and failing memories of old folk like me. Desperate Dan experiences some banking woes before the deeply surreal Pepperoni Pig eludes Big Bad Wolf to deliver her first pizza of the season whilst Beryl the Peril looks for a hobby and only finds trouble. One of the best selling comics in the UK, along with The BeanoThe Dandy reached sales of two million a week in the s. The digital relaunch was not successful and the comic ended just six months later. The first issue, under the name The Dandy Comicwas published on 4 December The most notable difference between this and other comics of the day was the use of speech balloons instead of captions under the frame. It was The Dandy Annual 2017 weekly until 6 Septemberwhen wartime paper shortages forced it to change to fortnightly, alternating with The Beano. It returned to weekly publication on 30 July From 17 July the magazine changed its name to The Dandy. One of those involved in the comic in its early days was George Thomsonwho served as deputy editor, and briefly - The Dandy Annual 2017 aged 18 - as editor. Thomson would later serve as a cabinet minister under Harold Wilson and as European Commissioner. Inless than a year after the comic's debut, the first Dandy Annual was released. Originally called The Dandy Monster comic, this was an annual bumper edition of the comic and has been released annually since then. In the first Desperate Dan Book was released, mostly consisting of reprints. Another was released inand it was released yearly between and Bananaman and Black Bob also The Dandy Annual 2017 their own annuals. Although later issues were all comic strips, early issues had many text strips, with some illustrations. Inthis meant 12 pages of comic strips and 8 pages of text stories. In the first Dandy summer special was published, a joint Dandy-The Beano summer special ; the first exclusively Dandy Summer Special was released the following year. In the Dandy comic libraries were released, which later became known as the Fun Size Dandy. These were small-format comics usually featuring one or two long stories starring characters from The Dandy and occasionally other DC Thomson comics. In Septemberthe ailing Nutty was merged with The Dandybringing with it the Bananaman strip, currently the third-longest-running strip still in the comic. Just over a year later, the short-lived Hoot was also merged with The Dandymost notably incorporating the character Cuddles into the pre-existing comic strip Dimples to form Cuddles and Dimplesanother of The Dandy' s longest running comic strips. After issue dated 16 October The Dandy underwent a radical format overhaul. Unlike previous incarnations, Dandy characters did not necessarily grace the cover every issue; instead, celebrities and other cartoon characters were featured; the first Dandy Xtreme had Bart Simpson on the cover. The Dandy Xtreme had a theme for each issue, usually a film or TV show. From 27 October issue The Dandy returned as a weekly comic and dropped "Xtreme" from its title. The The Dandy Annual 2017 received a major The Dandy Annual 2017, and all the comic strips from the Xtreme era except for Desperate DanBananaman and The Bogies were dropped.

We put this commitment to work through service in schools across the country. Every day, our AmeriCorps members help students to develop the skills and mindsets needed to thrive in school and in life, while they themselves acquire valuable professional experience that prepares them to be leaders in their careers and communities. We believe that all students can succeed. Supporting the success of our students goes far beyond just making sure they know how to add fractions or write a persuasive essay—students also need to know how to work in teams, how to problem solve and how to work toward a goal. City Year AmeriCorps members model these behaviors and mindsets for students while partnering with teachers and schools to create supportive learning environments where students feel a sense of belonging and agency as they develop the social, emotional and academic skills that will help them succeed in and out of school. The exhibition has been programmed in partnership with DC Thomson to celebrate the 80th anniversary of The Broons and Oor Wullie. The invited artists, Rabiya Choudhry, Rob Churm, Craig Coulthard, Malcy Duff, Hideyuki Katsumata and Sofia Sita, have each visited the DC Thomson archives and are exhibiting their own individual takes on the rich cultural history of our city’s publishing. The exhibition features murals, prints, drawings, sculpture and video alongside archive material. ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBITION RABIYA CHOUDHRY Edinburgh-based artist Rabiya Choudhry’s work takes inspiration from childhood memories and subconscious dreams. She has created new work for the exhibition loosely based on her own family and inspired by DC Thomson’s riotous comic strip The Numskulls, about a team of tiny human-like technicians who live inside people’s heads and run their bodies and minds. Choudhry’s own comic creation, The Coconuts, is the basis for a new pair of paintings in homage to The Numskulls. The paintings are titled dream baby dream and houses for the holy, in reference to songs by the bands Suicide and Led Zeppelin respectively.

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

ADDING DIMENSION Evangelical Community Hospital Annual Report 2019 TABLE OF CONTENTS 14 Board of Directors 16 02 Donor Report PRIME 48 06 Financial Report Geisinger Relationship 50 09 Community Benefit Report An Epic Conversion 12 Social Issues President’s Message Fiscal year 2019 was a period of extraordinary change at Evangelical Community Hospital. We signaled our strategic intent by announcing a stronger relationship with Geisinger. The unique agreement positions Evangelical to move forward as an independent community hospital while working more closely with Geisinger to make healthcare delivery in our region more efficient, cost- effective, and simply better for the patients we serve. The Hospital broke ground on our most ambitious construction project to date—a 112,000-square-foot expansion that, while not changing our bed complement, will significantly impact how care is delivered at Evangelical. Patients and families will be admitted to private rooms with their own bathrooms, and our caregivers will have the space and privacy they need to support the healing process. We started the move to a single, integrated electronic medical record. The transition will improve efficiency as providers and staff no longer must jump from one system to another in caring for patients. We shifted our strategic employee training to better address social issues impacting the community beyond our Hospital’s walls. We addressed suicide awareness, took a fresh, more personalized look at sexual harassment, moved to help alleviate the opioid addiction epidemic, and developed an award-winning human trafficking education model that is being replicated at other institutions in Pennsylvania. In short, we spent the fiscal year adding dimension—to our physical footprint, to our strategic direction, to our digital infrastructure, and to our community impact.
