Something Rotten!

Something Rotten!

The Award-Winning Performing Arts Program at St. Joseph Regional High School proudly presents...

The Inserra Theater May 7-9 & May 12-15

I am obsessed with SOMETHING ROTTEN! I’ve seen it four times on my own, taken eighty BTW Summer campers to see it, have recommended it to numerous friends, and bought countless tickets as gifts. There, I admit it. Guilty as charged!

I first saw SOMETHING ROTTEN! in 2015 and immediately fell in love with the show. As I joined the audience in a standing ovation (in the middle of the first act!) I dreamt of bringing SOMETHING ROTTEN! to St. Joes. It is the perfect show for our stage, with great male leads, many feature roles, a funny and clever script, and a good message to boot. But the journey to bring this show to the Inserra Theater was not unlike that of the Bottom Brothers. I tried unsuccessfully many, many times to get the show rights. I went to see the tour, which was staring an alumni of the St. Joe’s Stage, Richard Spitaletta, playing the role of Nigel. I fell in love with the show even more but waited, not so patiently, for the tour to end. And then the COIVD 19 pandemic struck. Finally, SJR is the first school in the northeast to perform SOMETHING ROTTEN!, and in front of a LIVE audience!

SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a celebration of musical theater. The “first musical ever” is part of the storyline, and the references to over 20 other musicals are both subtle and blatant. How many Broadway musical references did you notice? The show also does what all good musicals do, it takes you on a theatrical journey that changes you, makes you feel, think, laugh and transforms you from your life to a different place. Who doesn’t need that right now?

Mounting this production, an enormous undertaking in normal times, was an even greater challenge due to COVID. School closings, actor quarantines, and constant

mask wearing have become our new normal. What got us to this point is a tremendously talented and dedicated cast, crew, and production team that feel in love with SOMETHING ROTTEN! from day one. It has been my pleasure to watch their enthusiasm continue to grow over the last few months. . The SOMETHING ROTTEN! Family have made many sacrifices to bring this production to the level it’s at today. Your, enjoyment makes it all worthwhile

Welcome to our musical, Welcome to the Renaissance, Welcome to SOMETHING ROTTEN! FINALLY! John T. Asselta Producer

May 2021 Congratulations to the cast and crew of Something Rotten!

We are delighted that despite the limitations of COVID-19 that you have been able to safely produce a work of art for all to enjoy! The collaboration and teamwork that arise from theater are always special, but now even more so as we begin to emerge from over a year of lockdown and separation. While maintaining appropriate distances, we can still celebrate the many gifts and talents that those on stage and behind the curtain bring to a musical.

We are also delighted that so many young people have had the opportunity to experience, even if only in farcical fashion, the wonders of Shakespeare. Take heart from the message of in , for it speaks to you as surely as it did to :

“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

A very special thank you to all of the parents. Without your incredible support, we simply could not put on this level of production (and our lobby would not look nearly as cool!).

Thank you to our production team for the countless hours they put in and for their tireless dedication to exposing young people to the power of theater.

Finally, we are most especially grateful to our seniors who will perform for the final time on the stage of the Inserra Theater. Thank you for your remarkable contributions to the program over the past four years! We wish you luck as your journey into the phase of your education and life. Please know that you are always welcomed back to visit and perhaps take in a performance.

Good luck and break a leg,

Mr. Kevin McNulty ’78 Mr. Michael Bruno ‘05 President Principal
