8 The BMW Club Journal May 2017 Remembering - Robin “Rob” Pearce Passed away in St Georges’ Hospital Tooting on the 15th March after suffering By Chris Fleming a series of heart attacks following major surgery. A wise, gentle, patient and (reasonably!) tolerant man who had a wicked sense of humour, he is best known and remembered by the Club as being the remarkably successful Marketing Manager in the early “noughties” when Club membership reached the dizzy heights of nearly 6000. He had a particular fascination for gadgets of all sorts, especially anything that made BMW motorcycle ownership easier - his R1100RS was frequently dismantled and re-assembled in his garage just to see how they worked. A career spent with a large insurance company in the “City” gave him penetrating insights into how business actually works in practice, which he was able to bring to his Club office. On-going debilitating health issues were with him from the outset - he endured many inpatient hospital stays and frequent surgical interventions throughout his life, and these prevented him from joining in the many Club meetings and ride-outs both locally and nationally. When I joined the Journal editorial team in 2005 his advice, support, enthusiasm and insight proved invaluable. We also shared a love of French red wines and we somehow managed to visit a few vineyards in the Loire Valley and bring home some trophies in recent times. A good friend, both to me and to the club, he will of course be missed. Our condolences to his wife Sonja, his two daughters and his grandchildren. Farewell, Mr. P.

She was unfailingly hospitable to the many strangers who appeared at weekends seeking technical advice and practical help, an excellent passenger, and was liked by everyone. Heather died suddenly while on holiday in Spain, leaving many good memories amongst her friends, members across the South- West Section, husband Mike in France, and daughter Jo in New Zealand. She will be missed by all who knew her. Accolade from Jim Isherwood, Secretary of the South West Section. Really sad news about Heather’s passing. I well remember the days when we went round to their house in Plymouth; Mike would show us all how to do all sorts of maintenance jobs on our bikes and Heather would put on a lovely lunch for us all. Hilda and I haven’t seen Heather since they moved to France but she will be sorely missed and some good memories are filed away in our minds. Rest in Peace Heather.

May 2017 The BMW Club Journal 9 My R80/2 Lindsay Young or give it a complete rebuild, which would not be cheap but at least in the end I could end up with a fairly unique machine. Having come runner up in the “MCN - Built in Britain” competition a few years ago with my Bonneville, I decided to give it a go. Styling wise I was looking to recreate what I remember of the German motorbikes in the old WW2 movies i.e. big wide bars, fat tyres, single saddle etc. The only seventies era thing that I wanted to keep was the engine, all the other stuff from that period had to go. Fortunately I managed to source some 36” wide beach bars, control levers, Lucas switches and speedo from the fifties era and went to work. Over a year or so, I stripped the bike completely and carried out a complete rebuild, addressing and sorting out all the “issues” as I came to them (won’t bore you with all the technical details but a “can of worms” gives you the idea – at times I really I was asked on the BMW forum to do a write sight at all: wished I had cancelled the sale and taken up about my R80/2 project so here goes. (See photos No: 2, 3 & 4, regarding oil debris under 400 x time magnification) A little information regarding oil filters. Oil filters do not completely remove all the debris suspended in oil. The success rate depends on a rating known as the Beta ratio, along with other factors. This is given as a percentage and at best a filter would take out 97% of the particle count. The higher the particle count the higher the amount which will inevitably pass and travel around the engine unit, thus generating more debris. May 2017 The BMW Club Journal 23 Discount Page

Hi Members, I am still working on looking for new business for the discount page. P & O Ferries have now joined the discount scheme, now working on getting North Sea Ferries to join the scheme. We have a new member CYKO Accelerated Bike Cleaner. I have now tried this cleaner and it looks to be a very good product. It has not had any adverse effect on the paintwork to the engine or bike. Cleaned an old motor mower ready for a service the cleaner did a very good job with much reduced effort. I had to scrub the thick old dirty grease with a stiff brush and then wash off but no effort at all. I have also newly painted a test plate using standard one pack paint, and then using a sample of CYKO bike cleaner obtained from the NEC bike show back in November 2016. The plate has been heated up to 85°deg C several times and then coated with Cyko bike cleaner but not washed off as it should be, no effect to the new paint and finish. I have also cleaned a bike that has been used through the winter and the results were very good. They also produce a neat unique idea in the form of a personal body wash microfiber pad. The pad has been filled with soap moisturising properties; just add a little water, brill for camping. The cloth has been filled with soap just add water and away you go. I have given these a test and I find them very good (made my skin so soft!). Here are the contact details for CYKO. Hugh Thompson has been in touch to let me know about how the classic bike show at the Framlingham National Rally is progressing. You may recall I mentioned this last month. Along with myself, Hugh now has a second judge organised. That is Roger Newark, who is a member of the East Anglia Section but also Secretary of the EA section of the VMCC. The display of vintage & lassic bikes will be on Sunday morning. There will be awards in the following categories; Pre ‘69 Boxer Twins, Post ‘69 Boxer Twins and also K’s. If there are sufficient entries these cataegories may yet me be divided further. Entrants are requested to provide a short resume of their bike which will be “hung” on the bike. For further informaion and to enter your bike please see the advert in the Journal and contact Hugh. Final note for this month, a quick update on my R25/3 project. After getting the bike home and stripping it down to just a frame with the engine left in, it became apparent just how much of a ‘make do & mend’ life it had lived out in Indonesia. Many original parts being replaced with parts that happened to be avaiable at the time (Japanese switchgear, non standard carb, universal over- length cables, modern grips, bodged up wiring etc) Given the many incorrect parts and also the fact the bike isnt a matching numbers bike, I have made the decission that a total nut and bolt restoration isnt worth doing. Instead I’m going down the route of a sympathetic refurbishment, replacing only what needs replacaing whilst reataining the ‘patina’ from its 62year life. The majority of the mechincal and cosmetic work has now be completed and the next task will be to sort the electrics. All being well I hope to have it roadworthy by the end of May. Time to go back into the garage!
