In his article Adam mentions Alex Yermolinsky and Timur Gareev as the other grandmasters who have visited Idaho the past 30 years. At least two other names can be added to this list, although one might be eliminated on a technicality. Six-time US Champion Walter Browne won the 1996 Idaho Open which was held near the border of Nevada and Idaho in Jackpot. While in many ways an Idaho town including using Mountain instead of Pacific time, Jackpot is in Nevada, if barely. The man behind the Jackpot events, Idaho Chess Hall of Famer Barry Eacker, directed many tournaments there at Cactus Petes in the 1990s. He also collaborated with Tom Keelan on the Cutthroat Classics in Sun Valley in the late 1990s which must rank among the strong tournaments ever held in Idaho. While Browne may or may not be included on the list of grandmasters to visit Idaho, Igor Ivanov certainly should be. One of the last tournaments Igor played in before his death was the 2005 Idaho State University Presidential Challenge held in Pocatello. It is fitting that Igor gave a young Kayden a few chess lessons that as 16 years later they are the only players from Utah to achieve the grandmaster title. Keep up the good work! This page contains yet another proof for this fact: you can build a chessgame viewer with a stylesheet! The source document is a transcription of a chess game played by Garry Kasparov against a chess supercomputer -- IBM Deep Blue. The game is encoded in a form resembling the well-known Portable Game Notation (PGN) format. The source is very compact: a sample game on this page [DeepBlue.xml] is less than 4 kBytes in size. The stylesheet converts this arid text into a sequence of board diagrams, drawing every intermediate position as a graphical image (a special chess font is used). Applying a 23 kB stylesheet [chess.xsl], we get a 415 kBytes (!) FO stream [DeepBlue.fo]. These numbers give an idea of how deep the transformation is. The final step of the whole procedure consists in converting the result into PDF using XEP. The resulting PDF file [DeepBlue.pdf] is much smaller than the source FO stream -- less than 90 kBytes. (XEP implements PDF compression). We hope XSL fans will enjoy this example; and XSL foes will acknowledge its power! IEPE: Chessboxing was born in 2002; I was looking for new ideas after finishing my work called "Miracle of Berlin". In Amsterdam I met Luis, a.k.a. "Luis the Lawyer". We were hanging out in a bar and talking, and we found out that both of us had started boxing a year earlier and both of us have been playing chess for many years. The first idea we had was: Let's have a boxing match. Then I came up with the chessboxing idea from the comic "Froid équateur" by ENKI BILAL, which is set in 2096 and sees inhabitants of a ravaged planet competing in various games, including chessboxing. SU: Had any of your projects been inspired by a comic before? IEPE: Yes, a lot of them. My father owned a nice comic collection. I always had some of the pictures in mind. The project "Jokers performances" (joker.iepe.net) was inspired by the comic strip "Face de lune" by Jodorowsky & Boucq. Another source of inspiration was an essay out of the book "Beyond The Brillo Box" written by the art critic Arthur C. Danto. SU: How does it work? Could you explain to us the rules of chessboxing? IEPE: In the first place we had no idea what it should be like and which rules the match should have. We had long discussions with members of the Dutch chess and boxing federations in order to develop the idea.
