May 7 at 6 PM Film : Treasure Island (1950) with a talk back with MSMT Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark. The 1950 movie follows Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1883 novel of the treasure seeking adventures of Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) and Long John Silver (Robert Newton). With swashbuckling pirates and hidden treasure, this film is Disney’s first completely live-action film.

June 4 at 6:30 PM “Pirates and Lost Treasure of Coastal Maine” presented by author and pirate reenactor Greg Latimer, will offer insightful and factual information about Maine-based pirates as well as pirates “from away,” who, while not based in Maine, traveled to the area for a variety of purposes.
June 11 at 6:30 PM Film : Treasure Island (1934) with a Talk Back with MSMT Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark. The 1934 film directed by Victor Fleming and starring Wallace Beery, Jackie Cooper, Lionel Barrymore, Lewis Stone, and Nigel Bruce is an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous 1883 novel of the same name. Jim Hawkins discovers a treasure map and travels on a sailing ship to a remote island, but pirates led by Long John Silver threaten to take away the honest seafarers’ riches and lives.
June 12 at 6:30 PM “The Two Sides of Robert Louis Stevenson” a discussion with David Ingmundson, Teacher of Reading, Design Workshop at Morse High School; Instructor of English Composition at Southern Maine Community College.
In 1885, Robert Louis Stevenson published “A Child’s Garden of Verses,” a charming collection still read by and to children today. In 1886, he published “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” a brilliant and frightening tale of Gothic horror that probes the darkest corners of human nature.
How do we reconcile the two sides of Stevenson’s genius? Join a discussion of the author, his work, his childhood, his illnesses, successes, and fears. Perhaps the answers can be found in Stevenson’s childhood in Edinburgh, a place he later referred to as a “lamp lit Vicious Fairyland.” Or perhaps we can find enough clues in the writing itself.

May 1 – 31 Pirate Art Project: The Children’s Room will feature a Pirate Art Project. Color your own design or use the color page provided by the library. All mediums will be allowed. The suggested size is 9 X 11 inches. The color pages will be distributed to all students attending Edgecomb-Eddy School and Wiscasset Elementary School. They will also be available to pick up at the library.
Each entry will receive a bag of Pirate Booty snack and an eye-patch as well as being entered in a raffle for a fantastic basket of pirate goodies including a book or two! The pictures must be dropped off by Friday, May 31 by 5:00 pm. They will be on display during the contest and for much of the month of June.
May 1 – 31 Guess How Many!: Guess how many chocolate doubloons are in the glass jar during the month of May. The closet answer will get to take home the doubloons! One jar for children’s drawing and one jar for adults.
May 3 at 10:30 AM Children’s Story Time: Join the library for a rollicking story of pirates, parrots and mateys!
Saturday, May 4 (until the kits are gone) Take & Make Craft Kits: Fold and color your own cardboard treasure chest. Kit includes chest and embellishments.
May 8 from 3 – 4 PM Treasure Hunt . A fun afternoon of treasure hunting for children on the lawn. Call in advance to reserve spot – limited to 12
