School Board Workshop Report – Athletics and Driver’s Education- January 23, 2018 Highlights of Pinellas County Athletic Achievements 2017-2018 Fall Sports Swimming: State Champions include • Robert Finke: 4A, 200 Individual Medley and 500 Freestyle, Countryside High School • Joey Licht: 4A, 100 Backstroke, Countryside High School • Ricardo Martinez: 3A, Individual Medley, Osceola Fundamental High School • Helen Heuberger: 3A, 100 Backstroke, Clearwater High School • Ethan Long: 2A, 200 Freestyle, Lakewood High School • Top Team Finishes at State: Boys and Girls, Palm Harbor University High School Volleyball: Palm Harbor University High School and Tarpon Springs High School advanced to the regional finals before losing close matches. Cross Country: Top Teams – Palm Harbor University High School Girls’ team came in 9th in the regional tournament and St. Petersburg High School, Boys’ team finished 7th in the regional tournament. Football: Lakewood High School advanced to the regional finals before losing to Immokalee High School; and Largo High School advanced to the regional semifinals before losing to Naples High School. Middle School Athletics: A Pinellas County School middle school championship has been added this year in Volleyball and Basketball. Congratulations to Safety Harbor Middle School who won the first annual boys and girls volleyball championships. Update on the remainder of 2017-2018: Lacrosse: Four schools will pilot lacrosse in Pinellas County Schools as early as next year. St. Petersburg, Clearwater, East Lake, and Palm Harbor University high schools will play a club season this year with the goal of adding lacrosse as a sanctioned sport as early as the 2018-19 season. Other schools are interested in adding lacrosse in the future include Osceola, Countryside, and Largo high schools. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in Florida. Hillsborough, Pasco, and Sarasota counties have added lacrosse as a sanctioned FHSAA sport over the last few years. Scoreboards: We hope to add new scoreboards to all football fields over the next couple years. We are working with Nevco scoreboard, who is selling advertisements, to reduce costs. Positive Coaching Alliance: All Pinellas coaches receiving supplements will attend a 3-hours workshop from the Pinellas Coaching Alliance. This is the first time a systemic approach to coaching education has been implemented districtwide. Driver’s Education: There will a 10-day summer driver’s education program at 9 sites. The students will register online starting February 5th through February 12th. There will be 360 spots for private and public school students, who will be selected through a lottery system. PE and Health: Staff is working with high school PE teachers to increase the success rate in HOPE. .
