Thomas J. Tunison Vice chair Appendix C: What They Said Thurman Munson Hall of Fame Committee About Thurman Munson Thurman Munson was one of the greatest leaders in the history of team sports. His field vision and blue print for success, fueled by an inner strength and determination, unequaled, played out before our very own eyes on the biggest stage in baseball. He willed himself and his team to the top of the baseball world with his tremendous skill and a confidence that was something to behold. Thurman became known as one of the games most clutch hitters and one of its toughest competitors. His impact on the great game of baseball, witnessed and respected by his teammates and opponents alike, cannot be overstated. Modern day statistical analysis and advanced metrics bare this out, and give us a clearer picture and a better understanding of the historical significance and greatness of his career. His love for his family and friends was on full display, while his love for children and others was a hidden gem, only later to be discovered. This was a very special man and a very special player. With deepest respect for the Baseball HALL of FAME, there should be no question that this great institution that we know and love so well would be better served with the inclusion of THURMAN LEE MUNSON.” WRITERS/MEDIA Recent! “Four of the top five Recent! “Munson deserved better from the voters, catchers of all-time because he’d laid a strong foundation for a were born in 1947— “Thurman Munson would have been the spot in Cooperstown.” Bench, Fisk, Boone, and Munson.” greatest catcher of all-time had God not “Thurman Munson was the glue that held the called him to heaven too soon.

ESSAY/BOOK REVIEW From the Land of Bondage:* The Greening of Major League Baseball Players and The Major League Baseball Players Association Michael J. Cozzillio ** Marvin Miller's book, A Whole Different Ballgame: The Sport and Busi- ness of Baseball, is a breezy, informative and certainly controversial chroni- cle of the evolution of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA or Players Association) from an amoebic, ill-defined amalgam of players to a fully-developed specimen of trade unionism in professional sports.' Readers who seek to be entertained will find the sports anecdotes and inside information replete with proverbial page-turning excitement and energy. Those who seek to be educated in many of the legal nuances and practical ramifications of collective bargaining, antitrust regulation, individ- ual contract negotiation, and varieties of arbitration in the world of Major League Baseball will find Miller's book illuminating.

That is truly a prodigious number, and few ballparks outside of the major leagues can claim to have hosted so many of the game's best players.

  • Fame Is the Name Within the Game
Fame is the name within the game By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2013 A ton of things in life are compared to baseball, the mother game. Baseball metaphors are as common as failed closers on Chicago’s North Side. It cuts both ways. Each spring a new crop of distinctive names breaks into the game. Many of the names re- mind you of something, as baseball retains a hold on the populace like no other (in contrast to supposedly more popular, but gambling-oriented football). We love to chew over baseball names. Remember how Harry Caray tried to pronounce “Grudzielanek” back- ward. Good thing Harry wasn’t around when “Grud” was the Cubs’ everyday second baseman for two years. So as a public service, the Chicago Baseball Museum is relating the distinctive names in the game in a number of different categories. And just like the stretched strike zone for control masters like Maddux and Glavine, the “phantom” double play at second base, or bang-bang call at first base that doesn’t match the re- Frank Thomas not only has a statue at sult of the HD replay, we’ve taken some liberties, with U.S. Cellular Field, but also a Chicago spellings. side street in his name. Broadcasters and sportswriters are included. “Wringers” from outside baseball are included as honorary members. First names and nicknames apply in each category. Have fun. The game itself: Matt Batts; Art, Jeff, Jim and Neal Ball; Prince and Cecil Fielder; Scott and Thomas Diamond; Gary Glover; Josh Fields; Lee Walls; Bump Wills; Johnny Bench; Brett Pill; Dave Philley; Dave Chalk; Brandon Belt; Stan Hack and Justin Smoak.
