The United States was suddenly a modern nation, intercon- nected by layers of infrastructure, driven by corporate business systems, flooded by the enticements of consumer culture. The industrial advances in the North that had allowed the Union to survive a long and violent COll- flict now transformed the country, although resistance to Reconstruction and racial equality would curtail growth in the South for almost a cen- tury. A cotton merchant and amateur statistician expressed astonishment when he compared 1886 with 1856. 'The great railway constructor, the manufacturer, and the merchant of to-day engage in affairs as an ordinary matter of business' that, he observed, 'would have been deemed impos- sible ... before the war'? Architecture helped represent and propel this radical transformation, especially in cities, where populations surged fourfold during the 30 years after the war. Business districts boasted the first skyscrapers. Antonio García Pastor Universidad Rey Juan Carlos Resumen Este trabajo trata de analizar el discurrir de la cinematografía latinoamericana (más concretamente la mexicana) en España durante la década de los cuarenta a través de la publicación cinematográfica española Primer Plano, teniendo en cuenta el particular contexto político de ambos países (ausencia de relaciones diplomáticas); y de qué manera la coyuntura internacional y los vínculos culturales entre ambas naciones; marcaron el discurrir de las relaciones entre ambas cinematografías. Abstract This paper attempts to analyze the flow of Latin American cinema (specifically Mexico) in Spain during the forties through the Spanish Film Spotlight publication, taking into account the particular political context of both countries (absence of diplomatic relations); and how the international situation and cultural ties between the two nations; they marked the passage of relations between the two film industries. Regional Connector Transit Corridor Cultural Resources – Built Environment Technical Memorandum were designed to legally and financially assist cities to address problems of decay and neglect within their communities. In response to this new legislation, the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA) was established in 1948, in part to cure economic "blight" by funding and overseeing redevelopment. As its first major project, the CRA sought to improve the Bunker Hill area, which had been one of the more exclusive residential neighborhoods at the turn of the twentieth century but had deteriorated and fallen out of fashion. Despite many proposals, plans to redevelop Bunker Hill were rejected, and ultimately not begun until the 1960s, when large hotels and Victorian-era homes were bulldozed and the landforms were rearranged. Slowly, over the past 50 years, a community of high-rises has been constructed in their place (Kawaratani 2008). When the Harbor Freeway (Interstate-110) was completed in 1952, it was hopefully called “downtown’s new Main Street” by noted local architect A. C. Martin, Jr. (Los Angeles Times 1967). Construction of the freeway and the repeal of the building height ordinance in 1954 created a significant new concentration of high- and midrise buildings, eventually concentrated on Figueroa and 7th Streets. The downtown civic center began to take shape in the post-war era. As discussed in California: A Land of Contrast: Business blocks of the late nineteenth century have been replaced by the Civic Center, whose buildings, most of contemporary design, are flanked by multi-acre parking lots. The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do.
