Appendix 7 135th Session of the Synod of the Diocese of Fredericton Notice The One Hundred and Thirty-Fifth Session of the Diocesan Synod of Fredericton will convene on Saturday, 5 November 2016 at 8:50 a.m. at Christ Church (Parish) Church, 245 Westmorland Street, Fredericton. Membership The Credentials Committee advises that it is important for those who intend to exercise membership of the Synod confirm that their name appears on either the list of licensed clergy or elected lay delegates and substitutes. PLEASE REFER TO SECTION B. Those who feel the lists are in error need to take steps, prior to registration on the day of Synod, to clarify their status. Clergy not listed should contact the Bishop’s Secretary prior to registration and lay delegates, or lay substitutes replacing a delegate, not listed should assure the completion of the form of Certification of a Synod Delegate prior to attempting to register. Convening Circular Please become as familiar as possible with the contents of the circular and bring it to the meeting of Synod. Additional copies will not be available.

THEME: Walk the walk Ephesians 4:1 The 136th Session of the Diocesan Synod of Fredericton was convened in the Nave of Christ Church (Parish) Church, Parish of Fredericton. Registration of delegates began at 8:00 am. CALL TO ORDER The Right Reverend David Edwards, Bishop of Fredericton, called delegates, guests, and observers to order at 8:50 am by acknowledging that the land on which Synod gathered is the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaq peoples. He then opened the session with prayers and offered a word of welcome to all gathered. REPORT OF CREDENTIALS COMMITTEE The Bishop reported the Credentials Committee had advised him that, as of 8:50 am, the number of delegates registered was as follows: Clergy: 59 registered out of a possible 76 (78%) Lay: 126 registered out of a possible 171 (74%) Quorum was declared and the 136th Session of Diocesan Synod officially opened. Note: The Reverend Lidvald Haugen-Strand was left out of the membership list in the circular. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA Motion 136-01 - The Ven Cathy Laskey / The Rev’d Debbie Edmondson That the agenda be approved as presented. Motion carried. APPOINTMENT OF RECORDING SECRETARY The Bishop thanked the Rev’d Canon Leo Martin and presented him with a card for his service as the Diocesan Council Recording Secretary and Recording Secretary for Synod for 13 years.

Th e Council of the North is a grouping of fi nancially assisted dioceses, which are supported through grants by General Synod. Th ere are 9 dioceses, the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior and the Archdeaconry of Labrador. In these parts of the country, costs, particularly of travel, are high and fi nancial resources are scarce. Th e council, comprised of all bishops of the assisted dioceses, administers the General Synod’s grants for northern mission. Th e council meets twice a year to share information about the unique challenges faced by smaller ministries in the north. Th ey are encouraged by emerging creative ministries across the church. A barbecue lunch with various salads and desserts was a highlight for council members, which was followed by a presen- tation on the camp and its many recent upgrades. But before that, there was business to attend to, which included several key decisions on new issues.   • Council of the North Prayer Cycle
    Council of the North Prayer Cycle The Council of the North began in 1970 when the National Executive Council of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada appointed a taskforce to consider the challenges and opportunities for ministry in the northern parts of Canada. The following year this taskforce was replaced with the Primate’s Task- force on the Church in the North. In 1973 this taskforce became the Primate’s Council on the North. By 1976 this body had evolved into the present Council of the North. The Council of the North is made up of all bishops of the assisted diocese. They administer the General Synod’s grants for northern mission. The council meets twice a year to consider the needs of the mission and ministry of the Church in the north.
