Soon after my first article about the charity which I support in the Cape Flats townships appeared in the Village News last year, Joyce and Keith contacted me to ask how they might help. The charity is ‘The Guardians of the National Treasure’ which is run by a former work colleague of my wife Anne. Ralph Bouwers is dedicating his life to improving the lives of this impoverished community. The constant challenge for me is covering the cost of shipping consignments of used soccer boots, sports kit and dance wear. Each consignment of two tea-chest size boxes costs £150 to send from here to Cape Town. At the time of writing I have shipped out eight consignments (sixteen boxes). Joyce and Keith immediately offered to help with the costs of the following consignment which Edward Keyte, Ralph Bouwers and the boys at the hand-over meeting comprised netball tops, soccer boots and swimwear. Their help meant the items could be shipped out without the delays of fund-raising. Ralph and his sports-coaching colleagues at Soon we had photographs of the children opening Lavender Hill were understandably as grateful as the the boxes in Lavender Hill township and expressing youngsters for this generosity. Unfortunately, the team shirts weren’t available when Edward visited, but they were delivered shortly afterwards. You can see how pleased and proud the children are to be wearing their new ‘Keyte’ shirts! My thanks to the Keyte family for their kindness and generosity. The eye is large and dark, often to their presence. To help this species it is vital, as I compared to a big peppercorn. It has long wings and do, to monitor as many nests as possible to tail, but very short legs which give it a distinctive appearance, but its behaviour is a real giveaway, for it does indeed catch flies, and plenty of them. Its usual habit is to perch quietly on a twig or similar and sally out after passing insects, twisting and chasing them in flight, and rarely failing to catch them. Frequently it returns to the same perch. Horseflies, bluebottles and wasps are favourite prey, as well as many garden pests. It is found over much of Europe, even beyond the Arctic Circle, anywhere where there are trees and open spaces where insects abound. In Britain it arrives late, usually at the end of May or in early June as the weather improves and days lengthen. Most leave at the end of August, but migrants do turn up in gardens well into September and sometimes October. Sadly populations of this lovely bird, once common, are in steep and accelerating decline. Numbers have fallen by a staggering 87% since 1980 and every year they are becoming more difficult to find. There is some evidence that fewer juvenile birds are surviving their first migration, and that nesting success is falling. There are many possible reasons for this, and the British Trust for Ornithology is currently carrying out research, both here and in wintering grounds. Tellingly however, the species is still common in the insect rich countries of eastern Europe, so it seems likely diminishing numbers of One of the Spotted Flycatchers in the garden of Mary flying insects here is also a factor. The Importance of Pet Insurance

As any responsible pet owner will be aware, vet bills often aren’t cheap and usually come at the worst possible time! We are now able to do more than ever to help our animal friends both medically and surgically but the reality is that most people don’t have easy access to hundreds (or even thousands) of pounds to pay for unexpected treatment. There is little more distressing for an owner than to have to make a major decision about their pet on the basis of finances. This is where a good pet insurance policy can literally be a life saver. Pet insurance is there to cover your unexpected bills - the accidents and the illnesses. Often, a simple ailment that requires a single visit and short course of treatment won’t be over the excess on the policy, but something that requires a repeat visit or two usually gets you into claiming territory, as do accidents and on going conditions that require life long medication and monitoring (e.g. arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease). The thing about pet insurance is that we never know when we will need it so we need to be prepared. The ideal option is to get a good, comprehensive policy in place when your pet is young and healthy, having never suffered any previous illness or injury. This can be an issue with older re-homed and rescued pets, as any conditions suffered prior to the start of the policy will be excluded but a good insurance company will review these exclusions after a specified period of time, where appropriate. As a pet insurance administrator in a small veterinary practice, I process around 55 claims each month. I have compiled a list of pet insurance “dos and don’ts” to help you avoid falling foul of the complex terms and conditions.

Adult £5 Children (over 8) £2 Family ticket £10

Many of us enjoy the sound of church bells - but did you know your local West Monkton team are getting older? If the bells are to continue to ring out over the village in years to come we need to recruit some new 'blood' to support our existing team. Interested but not sure? Come along and see what's involved. Or just come and enjoy all things to do with bells, the tower and the belfry. Enjoy the views from the top of the tower. You are all very welcome.
