COVID 19 – SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS Due to the constantly changing situation and emerging rules on either side of the Welsh Border, it is difficult to provide accurate/final advise at the time of writing. The basic principles do appear to stand and the advice from the LAA is as follows:
1. Attendance at markets MUST be restricted to those conducting business and only 1 representative per business should be allowed to enter the site 2. A “Drop and Go” policy where possible – The Government is encouraging businesses 3. to continue, but where possible a Drop and Go policy should be implemented. 4. Market sales should be restricted to the sale of livestock. 5. Strict Social Distancing (minimum of 2 metres) will apply. The wearing of face coverings is NOT a substitute for the need to maintain Social Distancing at all times. 6. Face coverings must be worn by everyone attending the site, at all times (this includes market staff) – exemptions are permitted for anyone with a medical condition that allows a face covering not to be worn. 7. The Market canteen will only be offering a takeaway service. 8. Hand washing facilities & sanitising stations are provided around the market. 9. ALL who attend the market must register their attendance on site.
We would greatly appreciate that vendors keep the number of visitors to a minimum in order to allow as many buyers onsite as possible. We will have an online viewing/bidding facility in place. See details below.

(A.I.) – ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION. Denotes bull which have been used for Artificial Insemination by any of the Cattle Breeding Companies.
BREEDING GUARANTEES (a) All cows and heifers which are stated in the catalogue as having been served, or inseminated, not less than twelve weeks before the date of the Sale, or stated as having been running with a bull between dates (the Latter of which is not less than twelve week before the date of the Sale) will be guaranteed to be in-calf to the service date, the date of insemination, or between dates and to the bull stated in the catalogue, unless alteration is announced at the time of Sale. In the event of any breach of warranty the purchaser must notify the auctioneers in writing, within the time prescribed in the auctioneer’s sale rules, which in the case of cows and heifers proving not to be in-calf is 43 days. All females served, inseminated, or running with the bull less than twelve (12) weeks from the date of Sale shall be described in the Catalogue as not being guaranteed in-calf.
FREEDOM FROM DISEASE
1) Vendors must declare their herd’s risk level for Johne’s disease. 2) Herds are classified for Johne’s disease as: Risk level 1 – Herds have had at least 3 clear annual herd tests. Risk level 2 – Herds that have had one or two clear annual herd tests. Risk level 3 – Herds that have had less than 3% reactors in their last herd test. Risk level 4 – Herds that have had more than 3% reactors in their last herd test. Risk level 5 – Herds that are either not testing for Johne’s disease in an approved health scheme, or are not complying with the rules of such a scheme. 3) Members of a licensed cattle health scheme for Johne’s disease are required to isolate and test animals purchased from herds at all risk levels other than risk level 1 4) A purchaser wishing to take advantage of section 22 of the Society’s auction sale rules – purchaser’s rights in relation to vendor’s warranty for Johne’s disease and BVD – should ensure that samples are taken from cattle either prior to leaving the sale ground or within one week of the sale provided they are kept in appropriate isolation during that time.
BULL FERTILITY TESTING
The fertility examination should ideally be done within one month of the sale. Purchasers should note that the veterinary certificate relates to the fertility of the bull on the day of examination. If the interval between the examination and the sale is longer than one month, then the possibility that something could have adversely affected the fertility since the day of the examination is increased.
The veterinary certificate should be made available for inspection at the sale and the purchaser should be supplied with a copy.
UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only Welsh Black GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds. ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBV S) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. ACCURACY An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low. CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving. BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth. BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny. GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves. 200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable. CARCASE CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days. EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm 2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13 th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
