The Routeburn Tack by Helen Mitchell in 1973 “You must go on the Milford Track You must go on the Milford Track You must go on the Milford Track Even if you don’t go anywhere else --- - You must go on the Milford Track” says Bob Goodale, and he knows! From Aukland to Queenstown:- “Have you been on the Milford Track?” “Yes”, “No”, “No”, “Yes”, “Would like to”, `“Not interested”, “What’s it like?”. “Fantastic”, “Tremendous scenery”, “Didn’t see anything for rain, just trudge through mud”. “OK, but the Routeburn Track is much better, cheaper, shorter, much more interesting”. The Routeburn Track ….. Lorraine Orme, Jan Plume and myself arrived in Queenstown at about 5:30 pm, Thurs 15th March 1973. It was raining and cold. Getting thoroughly wet, we trudged with all our belongings, half a mile around the lake to the Youth Hostel. We had brought the sunshine with us all the way down the west coast – and Queenstown was not to disappointed us – three days of sunshine and glorious weather. It’s Friday – let’s get up early and find out what is involved in the Routeburn Track or the Milford Track – they were still just names to us. Information from the Tourist Bureau and Public Relations Office: $57.00 for the Routeburn Track and $82 for the Milford Track. These were paid guided tours which provided sleeping accommodation and meals and a bus trip back to Queenstown or TeAnau at the end of the journey. A bit much for our pockets and we had met many people who had done the tracks on their own.

The surface is usually gravel, rock or dirt, and like any track can get slippery in wet weather. Most rivers and waterways on these tracks have sturdy bridges. Occasionally there are also small streams that cross the track but are usually easy enough to step across safely. Be aware that in wet weather rivers can rise very quickly and ood the tracks – especially on the Milford Track. There are hill climbs where the track becomes steeper, which is all the better for views.

Community – Kea Project Plan Fiordland/Te Anau Funded by: Department of Conservation Community Fund (DOC CF) Period: 1 December 2015 – 31 October 2017. Key contact person: Kea Conservation Trust – Tamsin Orr-Walker – [email protected]; Ph 0274249594 Aim The aim of the Community – Kea Project Plan is to i) facilitate long-term community kea conservation initiatives and ii) to change the way we think, act and live with kea in our communities. This will be actioned through development of collaborative Project Plans across the South Island. Each community plan will address concerns specific to the local community and threats to the resident kea population. Project Background This initial project plan outline has been developed as a result of discussions with communities during the Kea Conservation Trust’s (KCT) Winter Advocacy Tour - 20 July – 3 August 2015. The tour was funded by Dulux and supported by Department of Conservation (DOC). The tour theme, “Building a future with kea”, aimed to promote a new MOU between communities and kea. This initiative is in line with the new Strategic Plan for Kea Conservation (refer attached draft document), objective 3: to i) increase positive perceptions of kea and reduce conflict and ii) facilitate formation of community led kea conservation initiatives. Local Community – Kea Project Plans will be activated by two Community Engagement Coordinator’s (CEC’s) based in the following areas: 1) Upper half of the South Island: Northern region (Nelson/ Motueka/ Kahurangi), Central North (Nelson Lakes/ Murchison/Arthur’s Pass/Christchurch/Mt Hutt) and upper West Coast (Greymouth and Hokitika). There is also the potential to include Kaikoura at a later date (the eastern most population of kea).
