STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE These services should not run earlier than the times shown but we may be delayed at times by factors outside our control. Please be patient if your bus does not appear when expected. We do recommend that you be at your stop a few minutes early. These services stop only upon request, so please SIGNAL CLEARLY when the bus approaches and DO NOT assume that a regular driver is behind the wheel. A new or ‘stand-in’ driver may be unfamiliar with the stops normally in use and we do not want to miss you! Please display the pass you have paid for, preferably by wearing it on the college lanyard, as delays are caused by drivers having to request sight of it. We can obstruct traffic and cause frustration for other drivers even at bus stops. Spot checks for passes by college staff may occur both when the bus arrives in the morning and when students board in the afternoon. Thank you for using the bins provided. We try to keep our vehicles tidy for the next passengers to use them and your help is important in achieving that. Drivers must clean the vehicle at the end of each working day and reducing the time spent on that task speeds all our departures for home when we finish. We are always grateful for your tidiness and consideration. Any questions regarding these services should be directed to Mrs. Lakhi at SMC Central on 01254 586 976 or 01254 580 464. • Cotton and the Community: Exploring Changing Concepts of Identity and Community on Lancashire’S Cotton Frontier C.1890-1950
Cotton and the Community: Exploring Changing Concepts of Identity and Community on Lancashire’s Cotton Frontier c.1890-1950 By Jack Southern A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of a PhD, at the University of Central Lancashire April 2016 1 i University of Central Lancashire STUDENT DECLARATION FORM I declare that whilst being registered as a candidate of the research degree, I have not been a registered candidate or enrolled student for another aware of the University or other academic or professional institution. I declare that no material contained in this thesis has been used for any other submission for an academic award and is solely my own work. Signature of Candidate ________________________________________________ Type of Award: Doctor of Philosophy School: Education and Social Sciences ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores the evolution of identity and community within north east Lancashire during a period when the area gained regional and national prominence through its involvement in the cotton industry. It examines how the overarching shared culture of the area could evolve under altering economic conditions, and how expressions of identity fluctuated through the cotton industry’s peak and decline. In effect, it explores how local populations could shape and be shaped by the cotton industry. By focusing on a compact area with diverse settlements, this thesis contributes to the wider understanding of what it was to live in an area dominated by a single industry. The complex legacy that the cotton industry’s decline has had is explored through a range of settlement types, from large town to small village.

Background: As a Lead Local Flood Authority, Lancashire County Council has a role in coordinating flood risk activities and ensuring the free flow of communication and collaborative works. In order to help achieve this, Lancashire County Council and relevant risk management authorities meet regularly to discuss local flooding issues and to identify opportunities for managing future flood risks. This has worked very well up to now and has allowed risk management authorities to work closely together to tackle often complex and challenging situations. However following the significant flooding that hit Lancashire in December 2015, it became evident that improvements could be made to the way in which these messages get communicated to affected communities. As such, Lancashire County Council has now developed a series of district level reports which aim to provide affected communities with information about what relevant risk management authorities are doing in their areas to help manage the risk of flooding from a variety of sources.
