Took part in “Regina Riots” in July 1935 when the RCMP attacked the unemployed trekkers, killing two and wounding 100. Anderson joined CPCan in Vancouver in June 1937. Arrived in Spain from Canada 02.10.1937. Went missing on Ebro front, 07.09.1938. Repatriated. Died in Vancouver 25.11.1974. 2. ASH Francis, born 16.04.1909 in Dooey, Downpatrick, Co. Down. Emigrated with his parents to Glasgow as an infant. Tunnel worker, merchant seaman. CPGB since 1933, had served in the Canadian Reserve Rifles. Arrived in Spain 04.01.1938. Disappeared during the March/April retreats, posted as deserter from the line. 3. BAILIE Archibald F., born 28.03.1912 Belfast. Lived at 199 Connsbrook Avenue. Labourer. Arrived in Spain from London 02.10.1937. Taken prisoner in March 1938. Non-communist. Repatriated 1938. 4. BAMBRICK Arthur James, born 14.10.1915 in Longford. Emigrated to Canada at 14 years of age, landing at Halifax 31.03.1930. Miner, no living dependants, unemployed before Spain. Lived in Vancouver. Member of YCL 1936 and CPCan 1937. Arrived in Spain 21.10.37. In 2nd recruits company, Tarazona, 11.02.1938, later Sergeant in company No. 2 of Canadian battalion. Commended for bravery during March retreats. Repatriated to Canada. Used Pseudonym “Pat O’Hara” while in Spain. Served in the Canadian Army in WW2. 5. BARR Victor, born 13.11.1916 Belfast, lived at 39 Swift Street. -

“The world outside these walls”: Toronto’s Provincial Lunatic Asylum in Context, 1830–1882 Maximilian Smith A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Programme in History York University Toronto, Ontario September 2019 © Maximilian Smith, 2019 Abstract This dissertation explores the place of Toronto’s Provincial Lunatic Asylum within the broader social, cultural, and political landscape of nineteenth-century Ontario (Upper Canada). The development of the asylum in Upper Canada was one part of a broader institutional reform movement intended to codify, segregate, and rehabilitate the province’s criminals, lunatics, and other social deviants. I argue that the lunatic asylum was fundamentally shaped by its place within this broader institutional suite. At once a medical, political, and social space, the asylum was mobilized by various individuals and associations to serve a variety of interests. The Provincial Lunatic Asylum was a liminal institution. Its value as a resource for the growing Upper Canadian medical profession, its place within entrenched systems of partisan patronage, and its status as a charitable public institution ensured that the fate of the lunatic asylum was tied to the life of the province. By situating the asylum within its broader social, political, and cultural contexts, this study enhances our understanding of the role of public institutions like the asylum in the early formation of the Canadian state. Moreover, this study sheds light on the intricate connections between lunacy care and the everyday life of Upper Canadians from many social and cultural backgrounds. -
Insights Into the O'neills of Ireland from DNA Testing
Journal of Genetic Genealogy 2:18-26, 2006 Insights Into the O’Neills of Ireland from DNA Testing Edwin B. O’Neill and John D. McLaughlin The O'Neills of Ireland are one of the best known and important families in Irish history, descended from a long dynastic line that for centuries were Kings of Ulster and High Kings of Ireland. By traditional pedigree they are patrilineal descendants of Niall "of the Nine Hostages" who was the semi-historical High King of Ireland who died in 405 and who was the founder of the famous Ui Neill dynasty. But an examination of DNA data on males with the O’Neill, McLaughlin, O Cathain, McShane and other related surnames has led to a theory that the Royal Tyrone O’Neills of Ireland, from some point forward, were not, as history records, patrilineal descendents from the line of the Ui Neill. An analysis of available Y-DNA data on 102 males with the O’Neill surname reveals the existence of two different O’Neill Y-STR clusters, both primarily located in the region of Ireland associated with the Ui Neill line and the Royal O’Neills. Results of testing the Y-SNP M222 indicate that the two groups of O’Neills are distinctly separate. Documented Irish history, coupled with Y-DNA data on surnames linked to the Ui Neill line at different time periods (McLaughlin, O Cathain and McShane) suggest the approximate time frame of a non-paternal event (NPE) in the Royal O’Neill line occurred between the 900s and 1500s. -
