ROUND 15 Sunday, June 15 Stockland Stadium Sunshine Coast Fire 14 Boys v Brisbane Strikers 10:00am Fire Open Women’s Team v SWQ Thunder 12:00pm Fire First Team v Brisbane Strikers 2:15pm www.sunshinecoastfc.com.au From the Managing Director Welcome everyone to Stockland Stadium for an exciting day of football. Today is a special day as not only are our men’s and boys teams taking on our long-term rivals, the Brisbane Strikers, but we also have the opportunity to see the magnificent Asian Cup Trophy at our grounds. The 2015 Asian Cup will be the biggest football competition ever held in Australia, and the chance to see and get a photo with the Cup will quite possibly be a once in a lifetime opportunity. The football itself promises to be very competitive; games against the Strikers have always been great contests and I’m sure today will be the same. Now that we are in the second-half of the season the pressure is on for the First Team to secure a position in finals and each game is crucial in doing so. Our Open Women’s team has been in good form over the past few weeks, defeating Annerley in the last SEQWPL Round and defeating Olympic in Round 1 of the Elaine Watson Cup last weekend. Today the squad will take on South West Queensland Thunder and look to secure the three points and a position in the top-half of the SEQWPL table before the league split in two weeks. Enjoy today’s games! Email: [email protected] www.sunshinecoastfc.com.au From the First Team Coach/ Technical Director of Coaching Welcome everyone to Stockland Stadium for today’s games. We are pleased to provide you all with a blockbuster day. Our games against Brisbane Strikers are always fiercely contested with each team refusing to take a backward step. Our game at the start of the year (4-2 Strikers) was by previous year’s standards a little low key, however both teams have improved significantly and as a result I am excited about today’s game. It is great to see Matt Thurtell back on the field after a knee operation, Matt of course is a local Sunshine Coast player and although he is plying his trade with the Strikers, that does not mean we do not wish him the best in seeking a contract at a higher level; his goal record clearly states he is worth a look. Our Under 14 Boys will be the first team to play today; this will be a good game with both teams fighting it out at the top of the ladder and I am sure the squads will enjoy the occasion and the chance to play on the Stadium pitch. Last week our U14 Boys found it difficult in Palm Beach, a place that is always tough to go and perform, and I am sure they will be keen to make amends this morning. Our young Open Women’s Team will play at 12:00pm against SWQ Thunder. I watched their game last week and I was pleased to see how adaptable a number of players have become. It was also pleasing to see other members of our U15G Girl team with the opportunity to play in the Open Women’s Team, they are starting the next step in their development. Today the squad will face Toowoomba, a game they will aim to win to cement a place in the top-half of the table before the split in the SEQWPL competition. As an extra bonus we have on display the Asian Cup Trophy. I encourage all of you to get a photo taken with the trophy as it is most likely a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have to congratulate Managing Director Noel Woodall and the effort in particular from Simon Ball of Sunshine Coast Council in bringing the trophy to Stockland for the benefit of all football fans. With the World Cup now in full swing there will be a few tired souls around the coast with the early morning starts. It will be a terrific tournament, the world’s best players on display in arguably the most passionate football country on the globe. The debate about who will win, who will be top scorer, MVP etc. is always an interesting topic, my tip on all three for what it is worth is Germany as Champions, Fred (Brazil) as top goal scorer and as for MVP - well being a defender (and as we know defenders are always the most important players in a team) - I will go for Philip Lahm. Enjoy the day and thank you for your support. Edgar, who originally hails from the English city of Liverpool before moving with his family to Australia six years ago, has scored 16 goals in 8 Fire Under 16 Boys player Adam Edgar has been on games for Fire Under 16’s trial in the UK. this season – including a hat-trick last weekend against SWQ Thunder. After previously being on the fringes of QAS selection, he recently ventured to the United Kingdom as he sought to impress high profile professional clubs including Rangers, Preston North End, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough. The 16 year old has since returned to Fire to maintain his match sharpness, but is set to return to Rangers in July when he will be considered for a professional youth contract. While admitting the competitiveness of British football was an adjustment, Edgar said his time with Fire provided a solid grounding and the club encouraged his ambition. “They’ve been fine with me (going over to trial) and they’ve understood it’s important to me. It’s important to them as well so they can get the credit for bringing me through,” he said. The young forward said he’d particularly benefitted from the guidance of Sunshine Coast Fire coaching programme, led by club Technical Director Kevin A’herne-Evans, a former Wales Under 21 representative. Edgar explained, “At Sunshine Coast the football we play is really calm and we get a lot more touches on the ball. You not just looking for certain players, but playing around as a team and Kevin is really getting us ready for senior football.” Continued next page... He also praised Fire Under 16's coach Ben Cahn’s contribution to his development. “(Ben) has helped me become a lot more calmer about my play. In the few months I’ve been training with him he has really improved me and he’s been really good,” Edgar said. Neil Edgar, Adam’s father, said when the family first arrived in south-east Queensland the pathway for elite football development was difficult for them to identify; however, with the advent of the National Premier Leagues, the way forward was much clearer. “I’m very impressed with the NPL and what the whole NPL is trying to do to improve players and coaching,” the more senior Edgar said. “All of the clubs I know are trying to put those good practices in place, trying to get good qualified coaches and do the best for the lads and bring them through.” “I think it will take some time but hopefully in the next five years what’s being done around the country with the National Curriculum and the way they are encouraging teams to play will generate better players.” A’herne-Evans said that Fire wishes Edgar all the best as he chases his professional dream.
