He organized our Unit Board and budget better than any other President we’ve had. His enthusiasm for bridge and the betterment of Unit 505 is wonderful. We will miss him and hope his business adventures in Wyoming work out for him and not keep him from the bridge table for very long. We will also miss outgoing Board members, Mike Cozart, Luke Shenoy and Sheila Ross. We thank them for all their efforts. They too have a love for bridge and helped to make our Unit better for all. Your Board has a few new members and new officers for 2016. Welcome to the new members: Maurie Studin, Marie Leonardini, Jim Houghton, Dave Willmott and Katherine Ewing. Returning members, Debbie Leggett, Joyce Sweeny (elected for another 2 year term), Lucy Brown, Pat Ingoglia, Zelna Morrow and Miriam Steinberg. Congratulations to our 2016 officers: Debbie Leggett, Secretary, Joyce Sweeney, Treasurer, Dave Willmott, Vice President and Katherine Ewing, President. (See photo and contact information for Board members on the next page.) At our first meeting the new board determined our goal is to hold successful Unit and Sectional games for our members/players. To do this we all have to work together. To start, at our February Board meeting, we’ve invited the Club Owners/Managers to join us. Our plan is to get to know them better, find out their needs/concerns and let them know ours, so that we can help each other. All of you are also important to the Unit. Feel free to direct your questions or suggestions to any board member. We have some surprises for you at the Unit Game on February 14, 2016. (See flyer on page 4.) The pot luck will be side dishes as the Unit Board will supply a main course. Watch for more fun at the Valentine’s Day Unit Game. There are 22 Units in District 21 and we have the largest ACBL membership. This year your Board will strive to work together with you to make our Unit the best in the District, too! May the bridge cards be good to all of you. • Robert "Bob" Hamman President and Founder
Robert "Bob" Hamman President and Founder When he's not competing in national and international bridge tournaments, Bob Hamman - ranked the world's top bridge player in 1983, and from 1985 through 2004 - can be found inventing new promotional sweepstakes and gaming contests, and developing the mathematical models used to rate the risks and analyze the odds associated with large money promotions. Hamman, who founded SCA Promotions in 1986, has built the company into the world's largest provider of prize coverage for promotions, contests and games. He is behind many of the million dollar challenges seen at nationally televised sporting events, as well as the online lotteries and sweepstakes that have transformed the promotional industry in recent years. He has planted a $500,000 promotional prize in a Hershey's bar, guaranteed the performance bonuses of professional golfers and race car drivers, and covered prizes in fishing tournaments, fast-food restaurant chain contests, consumer products, scratch-and-win campaigns, casino jackpots, bingo, radio and television contests and even an olive-in-one toss into a martini. Prior to launching SCA Promotions, Hamman managed his own insurance brokerage firm, Hamman Group Insurance Services Inc. He has also spent the past four decades working as a professional bridge player. Arguably the best known name in bridge, Hamman has won 12 world championships, over 50 national championships and was named American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) player of the year three times. He was inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 1999. A native of Los Angeles, Hamman moved to Dallas in 1969 when Ira Corn hired him to play on his professional bridge team, the Aces, which brought the world championship back to the U.S.

PROMOTING the GAME of BRIDGE in SOUTH AFRICA THE BRIDGE Edition 13 Publisher: The S A B F December 2020 www.sabf.co.za Special Year-End Edition Ed.: Stephen Rosenberg [email protected] FROM THE PRESIDENT This year has been a very hard and sad year for our community. Many of us have lost family or friends, not always as a result of COVID-19, and our hearts go out to them and their families. And still this accursed plague hangs over us. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. With the announcement of the development of successful vaccines and their distribution in Europe and America over the coming James Grant months we will surely see a reduction in and eventually the eradication of this pandemic. The next few months are going to be the most trying for us, because we are letting our guard down not only as individuals but as a society. We have grown tired of the sanctions imposed on us and are now taking more risks. We are travelling more, we are visiting friends and families. Fewer people are wearing masks in public places, social distancing is no longer the norm, and we have convinced ourselves that perhaps after all we are immune to this infection. We only have to follow what is now happening in Europe to see the folly in this outlook. Personally, I would like to think that COVID-19 has forced us re-evaluate what is really important in our lives and those around us and that when we finally emerge from this trauma that has paralysed us as individuals and as a nation we will do so as a society kinder and less selfish than before, if only for a little time.

2014 Spring NABC Appeals Casebook 2014 Spring NABC Appeals Casebook Dallas, Texas Foreward The appeal hearings and commentary descriptions are now being compiled and edited by the American Contract Bridge League. They are published on the ACBL web page. This internet publication is intended to be a tool to help improve the abilities of those serving on Appeals Committees and Tournament Directors and to communicate decisions and the process to arrive at those decisions to the membership at large. A total of eleven (11) cases were heard. Six (6) cases were from unrestricted (by masterpoints) North American Bridge Championship Events and were heard by a Committee of peers. The names of the players involved are included. Five (5) cases were from all other events and were heard by Panels (Committees) of Tournament Directors. The names of the players involved are included when the event from which the appeal came was a Flight A/X event or was the top bracket of a bracketed knockout event. When the names of the players are not used, the player’s masterpoint total is included. The cases are first presented without commentary. After the official Panel of commentators has had an opportunity to provide their commentary and any corrections to the cases, the commentary is added, corrections made and the internet publication is finalized. Everyone involved in this process is due praise for their efforts. Special thanks to the NABC Appeals Committee and the Tournament Directors serving on the Committees and Panels, the case scribes, and commentators. Without their considerable contribution of time and effort, this publication would not exist.
