The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the elusive Triple Crown, is run between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Called “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans,” the Preakness is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on the third Saturday of each May. First run in 1873, the race is competed at a distance of 1 3/16 miles, 1/16 of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby, for 3-year-olds on the main dirt track. This year’s edition of the Preakness will be run on Saturday, May 19. After winning the Kentucky Derby and becoming the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win “The Run for the Roses” while not having raced as a 2-year-old, Justify takes his next step towards a possible Triple Crown in Saturday’s Preakness. It won’t be easy, though, as Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic also makes the journey to Baltimore. This “2018 Preakness Guide presented by RacingDudes.com and Guaranteed Tip Sheet” will give you the information needed to hopefully make a nice return and a major score on the two big days at Pimlico, including Black-Eyed Susan Day on Friday, May 19! This Preakness Guide’s features:

FEBRUARY 11, 2020 GUINNESS OPEN GATE BREWERY EVENING SCHEDULE 5:00 – 6:00 COCKTAILS 6:00 – 9:00 AWARDS / DINNER ABOUT THE TROPHIES When the best of Maryland racing and breeding is celebrated this evening at the third annual Renaissance Awards, the recipients will be handed a trophy – a striking bronze of an exquisite Thoroughbred head – specifically created by artist Peggy Kauffman. Kauffman (left), an accomplished horsewoman, has been a portrait artist of more than 30 years who works in bronze sculpture and pastel painting. In addition to her portraiture, she has created trophies that are presented at Fair Hill Races, and for horse show events in New York. MHBA Executive Director Cricket Goodall had seen the work of Kauffman on display at a benefit and reached out to her about creating a Renaissance Awards trophy. 1 The bronze is approximately 11 inches long, 3 ⁄2 inches wide and 1 8 ⁄2 inches high, though a 2-inch base adds to its height. Kauffman has her bronzes cast at New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, which uses the lost wax casing process. It can take months from the time a piece of art in its clay form arrives at the foundry until the bronze is finished. Design and size are among the factors. Kauffman, who made the six-hour trip to Baltimore from her home in Millerton, N.Y., to oversee much of the process, launched her career as an artist by first going to art school in New York before taking courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art, but noted her main education was “when I worked and rode for a (show) horse dealer in New York state for years.” She had competed professionally with show and event horses.

1/ST BET WAGER GUIDE PREAKNESS STAKES OCT03 PIMLICO RACE COURSE MEET THE PREAKNESS CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD AUTHENTIC: He’s the wire-to-wire upset winner of the Kentucky Derby at over 8-1 odds for 6-time roses-wearing trainer Bob Baffert. The trainer’s record with Derby winners returning in Preakness is unblemished—5-for-5. Baffert won additional Preakness scrums with Derby disappointments Point Given and Lookin At Lucky for a record 7 wins in the traditional second leg of the Triple Crown. This year, things are just a bit different (the understatement of all time). With the truncated 2020 Belmont Stakes already in the books, Preakness is presented one month – instead of two weeks – after the Kentucky Derby. A month between Derby and Preakness shouldn’t bother Authentic at all. So far, not much has. He’s lost just 1 of 6 starts and his Derby triumph shushed critics who had suggested the colt might be distance- challenged. While it’s possible that extra time between this year’s Derby and Preakness might permit a new face to adequately prepare to challenge Authentic for current sophomore preeminence, that mission will need to be completed on the racetrack…and it won’t be easy. ART COLLECTOR: Unlucky to be forced to miss the Kentucky Derby with a slight hoof injury that necessitated antibiotic treatment, this Bernardini colt figures as the main contender to Authentic— possibly early and late in the Preakness. First across the finish in 5 consecutive races by an average winning margin of 4.7 lengths, Art Collector was on fire heading into the Kentucky Derby.

Fellow Racing Fan, Congratulations to the connections of 2019 Kentucky Derby winner Country House! That certainly was one wild-and-woolly Kentucky Derby, culminating with the fi rst on-track win disqualifi cation in the race’s storied 145-year history. Because of the Kentucky Derby’s wide-open nature, Preakness fi gures to be a similarly challenging handicapping puzzle. None of the top 3 o cial Derby fi nishers will contest the Preakness, so that leaves Improbable and War of Will as post-Louisville headliners. Set to join Derby runners in Baltimore are capable new faces that have been pointed toward Old Hilltop: Alwaysmining, Anothertwistafate, Sueno, Owendale, Bourbon War and more. Have no fear. • Pimlico Stakes Preakness Day May 16, 2015
In Focus Pimlico stakes Preakness Day May 16, 2015 For more, visit www.theracingbiz.com (Primary handicapping and analysis in this document by Ted Black.) GRADE 1 PREAKNESS STAKES RACE PARTICULARS: Race 13 (6:18 EDT), $1.5 million purse, 3 yo STORYLINE: The top three finishers from the Kentucky Derby arrive for the middle jewel of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, led by Derby winner American Pharoah will seek to become the 35th horse in history to capture the first two legs of the crown and then potentially seek to become only the 12th horse to successfully complete the Triple Crown sweep. RACE OVERVIEW: While the Derby was comprised of 18 runners, the Preakness has, by comparison, a compact field of eight three-year-olds that features only three "new shooters" who bypassed the Derby to play a spoiler role in this event in Baltimore. THE SCOOP The favorite - American Pharoah lived up to his role as the 5-2 choice in the Kentucky Derby to capture the run for the roses in a modest 2:03.02 for the one-mile and one-quarter distance at Churchill Downs. Last year's champion two-year-old colt has showed no signs of relinquishing his title as the best of his generation by taking both the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park before heading to Louisville to capture the sport's biggest prize to date. Top contenders - Firing Line finished a game and gritty second in the Derby after stalking the previously unbeaten Dortmund through the first mile of the 10-furlong affair.
