SITE LOCATION 2.1.1. Stanage House Farm is an isolated farmstead located 1.8km north of the village of Eyam and 1.2km west of the hamlet of Bretton (Figure 1). The farm is surrounded by fields, formed on the edge of an area of unenclosed moorland, Eyam Moor, and accessed along an unpaved lane leading onto The Croft off Sir William Hill Road. 2.1.2. The farm lies on the northern slope of Sir William Hill, from which the land drops steadily away to the north before dropping more sharply to form the valley of Bretton Brook. A gritstone outcrop, known as Stanage, forms a ridge to the east of the site. 2.1.3. The arrangement of the site (Figure 2) is focused on a single foldyard, defined by a long linear combination barn to its north (Building 4), and a boundary wall to its south and west which is abutted by a modern lean-to structure (Building 5). The farmhouse (Building 1) is situated to the south-east of the yard and faces south. A small yard is enclosed to the west of the house, onto which fronts a former kennel (Building 3). To the south of this yard is an outhouse (Building 2). 2.2. GEOLOGY 2.2.1. The bedrock geology of the site is mudstone and siltstone of the Hebden Formation, lying between areas of sandstone belonging to the Shale Grit and Kinderscout Grit (BGS, 2021). The latter has been historically quarried at Sir William Hill for building stone to the east of the site, with Kinderscout Grit buildings recorded at Grindleford, Leam Hall and Highlow (Historic England, 2016 & 2017). 2.3. DESIGNATIONS 2.3.1. The site is not covered by any heritage designations. 3 The JESSOP Consultancy Sheffield + Lichfield + Oxford STANAGE HOUSE FARM, Sir William Hill Road, Bretton, Derbyshire Written Scheme of Investigation - Report TJC2021.7 Figure 2: Site Layout showing recording strategy 4 The JESSOP Consultancy Sheffield + Lichfield + Oxford STANAGE HOUSE FARM, Sir William Hill Road, Bretton, Derbyshire Written Scheme of Investigation - Report TJC2021.7 3 HISTORIC AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL BASELINE 3.1.
