2 THE REMEMBERING BELOVED ARTIST, MENTOR, BOARD MEMBER AND FRIEND

By BRIDGET MORGAN, Public Relations & Communications Manager

In December of 2015, Seattle lost a treasured artist and teacher, Sarah Nash Gates. She will long be remembered by the staff of The 5th Avenue Theatre as one of our greatest influences, a wonderful board member and friend. While 5th Avenue audiences may know her for her incredible costume designs, her devotion to theater and arts education made its influence felt in ways that patrons might not realize.

A TALENTED ARTIST 5th Avenue audiences were amazed by Gates’ talent as a costume designer when she brought Oliver! to life in stunning vivid colors, followed by the critically-acclaimed production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s . She designed for other Seattle institutions including Intiman, Seattle Rep, Seattle Children’s Theatre and Seattle Opera. She also worked nationally with theaters including Denver Center Theatre , Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, among others. She served as president of the Institute for Theatre Technology in the early 90s (the first woman and costume designer to hold that office) and served three years as president of the University/Resident Theatre Association.

A PASSIONATE EDUCATOR Gates became a member of the Board of Directors of The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2008, quickly becoming the Chair of the Education Committee, which oversees our many education programs. Over the years, these programs have grown to reach over 74,000 young people across State, thanks in part to her vision and leadership. She was an ardent supporter of programs like Rising Star Project, which provides direct mentorship to young people interested in all facets of theater— completely tuition-free, and Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company, which tours locally-written curriculum based musicals to schools across the state. She retired as the Executive Director of the UW School of Drama in 2013 after a 20 year career nurturing generations of theater artists and professionals, but could not stay away for long. She came out of retirement recently to serve as the Interim Divisional Dean of the Arts.

AN INSPIRATION TO OUR COMMUNITY As the Executive Director of the UW School of Drama, Gates played a major role in cultivating our treasured local talent pool. Many who work regularly on our stage were mentored by Gates as they first tentatively navigated careers as professional theater artists. Artists including lighting designer Robert J. Aguilar (Little Shop of Horrors; Jasper in Deadland), actress Taryn Darr (, Val; White Christmas, Judy), and director Brandon Ivie (A Christmas Story, The Musical; Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella) met with her regularly at UW, garnering insight into the professional world of theater that they would eventually pursue. Gates was also a founding member of Theatre Puget Sound, which has become a mainstay of Seattle’s vibrant and multi- faceted theater community, connecting companies with artists and artists with each other. She encouraged collaboration and communication on every level. The 5th Avenue Theatre will always remember Sarah Nash Gates for her artistry, her passion for mentoring young artists, and her dedication to her community. We mourn her loss, and share our deepest sympathies with her family and loved ones. The performance of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying that you are seeing tonight is dedicated to her memory. BOARD OF DIRECTORS ABOUT Stephen P. “SATIRE is a form of criticism that uses SARCASM, RIDICULE, AND IRONY to EXPOSE FOOLISHNESS OR VICE in humans, organizations, and governments.” (standard definition)

“SATIRE is what closes on Saturday night.” (GEORGE S. KAUFMAN, Broadway curmudgeon)

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is Politics was a frequent target of the satirical musical. a textbook example (if textbooks were hilariously funny) Finian’s Rainbow in the 1940s and Li’l Abner in the 1950s of the standard definition, and a sharp refutation of got in some pretty good digs at issues as difficult as Kaufman’s gloomy prediction. But it’s understandable racism and nuclear annihilation. But in the post-war era, why Kaufman made his cynical joke. He was a writer and with industry blacklists and congressional investigations director, and satires usually appeal more to authors than posing a constant threat to writers who got too critical, to the public. Theatergoers stubbornly prefer to go home even an innocent management-labor romp like The after a musical cheered and uplifted, rather than reflecting Pajama Game might be labeled subversive (one critic bitterly on “foolishness or vice.” called it “that commie musical”). gangster-dominated jukebox racket. The conformist world of big business was ripe for satire. The white- collar office worker had recently been analyzed by serious-minded sociologists and best-selling novelists Abe Burrows in books like William Whyte’s The Organization Man and Sloan Wilson’s The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Now it was the humorists’ turn.

Comedy writer Abe Burrows and composer-lyricist Frank Loesser both knew their way around an office building. Burrows had started young as a runner on Wall Street, then did time in an accounting firm before moving on to a career in the high-pressure world of network radio at the NBC headquarters in Rockefeller Center. Loesser had mastered the Hollywood studio bureaucracy before moving back to New York to score shows and become chief of his own publishing company, Frank Music Corporation. One of Loesser’s first shows, the classic Guys and Dolls, teamed him with Abe Burrows, and the two became fast friends.

In 1961 they unveiled their satiric masterpiece, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. There had been workplace musicals before, but few of their plots turned on the actual everyday details of office life. How to Succeed is not “about” its boy-meets-girl romance— romance itself is skewered in the story and songs. The Frank Loesser show is a sharply satirical account of what went on behind the glass walls of corporate office buildings in the Mad Men era, and no one is spared: from the out-of- touch chairman of the board to the warring executives to the fawning yes-men to the predatory managers How to Succeed expanded the range of permissible to the husband-hunting secretaries to the lowliest subjects for Broadway satire. Later shows have taken mail-room drones. All their motivations and schemes on the American justice system (), religion are exposed, all their petty rivalries and grudges, their (The Book of Mormon), and (a much easier target) the blatant favoritism, their exploitation of old-school ties, musical itself (The Producers, Monty Python’s , even their coffee break rituals. Something Rotten!).

How to Succeed was something different: an equal- Culture mores have changed a lot since the days of opportunity evisceration, but done with such wit that How to Succeed, but human nature has not. Take a look the very people it skewered laughed the hardest, around any present-day office and I guarantee you’ll propelling it to a long run, seven ®, and find Finch, Rosemary, Biggley, Bratt, Frump, Smitty and even a Pulitzer Prize. Luckily, we still have the cautionary Burrows. Burrows also directed, giving him and Loesser satire of How to Succeed in Business Without Really complete creative control.
