Germany in Euro 2016 semi-final after beating Italy in thrilling penalty shootout — RT Sport (2.04/3) The last penalty was scored by Germany’s Jonas Hector, which finally put an end to an extremely tough and close match. Germany failed to beat Italy in their previous eight major tournament games, four of which were knockout matches – most recently in the Euro 2012 semi-finals. Apart from an early offside goal from the Germans, the highly-anticipated match had a slow start. However, a handball, penalty and goal from each side (marking the first goal Germany conceded since the tournament began) during the second half was enough to rile up the impatient crowd. The game was sent to extra time and then a penalty shootout. The last penalty was scored by Germany’s Jonas Hector, which finally put an end to an extremely tough and close match. In the semi-final Germany will face the winner of a France vs. Iceland match to be played on Sunday July 3. Fans’ reactions were polarized, as some praised the game as the most exciting one out of the whole tournament, while others said they were bored and unhappy with the result. 2 Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor, dies at 87 — RT News (1.06/3) Wiesel, a Romanian-born author of more than 40 books, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. Watch or read his Nobel acceptance speech “Night” sold 10 million copies after initially being turned down by a dozen publishers. Three million copies were sold after spending 80 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list when Oprah Winfrey featured it for her book club 10 years ago. Dozens of translations of Wiesel’s classic continue to be taught in schools around the world. At the age of 15, Wiesel, his parents, and three sisters were taken from the small town of Sighet, Romania, to Auschwitz, where his younger sister and mother were immediately sent to the gas chambers. His father was beaten to death by an SS officer after the rest of the family was forced to march to Buchenwald, just days before US soldiers arrived. After he and two of his sisters survived, he moved to France to study literature, philosophy, and psychology before developing an interest in journalism and becoming an author. In 1956, Wiesel was sent to New York on a journalistic assignment and was struck by a car, confining him to a wheelchair for a year and turning him into a lifetime New Yorker. After struggling with an expired visa due to the injury, Wiesel became a US citizen in 1963 and married his wife, a fellow Holocaust survivor, in 1969. The two founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity in 1988. Wiesel was a humanities professor at Boston University (where he commuted to from New York for 30 years). He also taught Judaic Studies at City University of New York and served as a visiting scholar at Yale University. During a 1985 ceremony honoring Wiesel at the White House, he asked President Ronald Reagan to cancel his visit to a German cemetery where Nazi war dead are buried. ' 'That place, Mr. President, is not your place ,'' Wiesel said in an emotional speech. '' Your place is with the victims of the SS .'' Despite the president being “ obviously moved ” by Wiesel’s speech, Reagan did not change his plans. During his time as chairman for the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust, Wiesel pleaded for intervention during the persecutions in Yugoslavia after a visit in December 1992, the same time that he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George H. W. Bush. In 2007, Wiesel was beaten by 22-year-old Holocaust denier Eric Hunt in San Francisco. He was also a victim of Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, who wiped out his family investments and $15 million from the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. Nearly one-third of the foundation's assets have been replaced through new contributions, according to tax documents obtained by AP . In 2009, Wiesel revisited Buchenwald for the first time, along with Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, after urging world leaders to pay a visit during their stopover on the way to D-Day commemorations in France. " And I thought one day I would come back and talk to him and tell him of the world which had become mine. But can I tell him the world has learnt? I am not so sure ," Wiesel said during his moving speech there.

UAE tells citizens to avoid national dress while abroad after man taken for ISIS member in US — RT News (1.02/3) “For citizens travelling outside the country, and in order to ensure their safety, we point out not to wear formal dress while travelling, especially in public places,” the message from the country’s Foreign Ministry Twitter account reads. The ministry also posted a message on their website warning UAE nationals to “abide by the ban of burqa (the veil) applied in some European countries and cities, which prohibits the wearing of the veil (burqa) in public institutions and places.” A UAE businessman was held last week in Avon, Ohio after a female clerk at the local Fairfield Inn hotel called 911 to tell the police that she had seen a man linked to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), the Arabic-language al- Bayan newspaper reported, as cited by Reuters. The woman had heard the man, who was wearing a traditional long white robe and headscarf, speaking on his phone in Arabic in the hotel lobby, the National media outlet reported. Police detained the Arab businessman, violently wrestling him to the ground. A picture from a video of the encounter was later posted by the Gulf News media outlet, who identified the businessman as Ahmad Al Menhali. Police released the man after they understood that they had made a mistake. The businessman was badly shaken by the incident, however, and needed to be sent to the hospital after fainting, Al-Bayan says. Avon’s chief of police, Richard Bosley, apologized to the businessman after Al Menhali said he had hired a lawyer to pursue the case. Western countries have been introducing restrictions on Muslim traditional clothes as of late. In mid-June, an indoor pool in southern Germany banned the burqini – a modest swimsuit worn by some Muslim women. In May, a Danish education center forbade six Muslim students from attending classes in niqabs. The burqa and niqab are also prohibited in parts of Switzerland and Italy, while Belgium and France have placed public nationwide bans on them. Attitudes towards Arabs in European countries have become tense since an influx of migrants intensified last year. According to the latest study , Islamophobia has skyrocketed in Germany, where 40 percent said that Muslims should be banned from entry. Seven years ago, the percentage was half that. In addition, every second German respondent said they sometimes feel like a foreigner in their own country due to the large number of Muslims there. 5 Beijing announces South China Sea drills ahead of court’s verdict on disputed islands — RT News (1.02/3) The naval drills, which will cover the area east of China’s Hainan Island all the way to and including the Paracels, will be held on July 5-11, Reuters reports, citing a brief statement published online. Beijing’s territorial claims to the islands partly overlap those of the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan, while Beijing also has ongoing territorial disputes in the area with Malaysia and Brunei. An arbitration court in the Dutch city of The Hague will be hearing the dispute between China and the Philippines on July 12. Over the last years, China has engaged in unprecedented construction of artificial islands and infrastructure on the reefs of the Paracels, preparing a base for its military, a harbor for ships, and even building a full-fledged flight landing strip on Woody Island. US officials claim that the area is protected by surface-to-air missile complexes that have been delivered by China’s military. Beijing has consistently insisted that it is within its right build whatever it wants on the island, since they have belonged to China since ancient times. The sea routes passing by the Paracels in the strategically important waters of the South China Sea are key to ship-borne trade worth $US 5 trillion annually. The shelf of the islands is also likely to hold considerable deposits of hydrocarbons. After Beijing reclaimed several atolls and built up military installations on the group of disputed islands, Washington accused China of “acting aggressively” in the South China Sea. The US has sent several ships into the archipelago over the past year, arguing that it was enforcing freedom of navigation in international waters, while drawing protests from Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping says Beijing has no plans to attack anyone, but will continue its policy of active defense. In an apparent barb at the United States, Xi said that he did not appreciate Washington’s meddling in China’s affairs in the South China Sea, stressing that “we are not afraid of trouble.” “No foreign country... should expect us to swallow the bitter pill of harm to our national sovereignty, security or development interests,” he added.

Olympics 2016 rowers to face feces-filled Rio waters — RT Sport (0.01/3) The controversy first reared its ugly head last summer, when a report revealed that raw sewage flows directly into major bodies of water near the venues where the competition will take place, and that viruses linked to human sewage were present at levels up to 1.7 million times higher than that considered alarming in the USA and Europe. Long-standing worries over the city’s water haven’t gone away, as Olympic preparations have continued to reveal environmental issues and some question Rio’s water is just too dirty to compete in. Rio only treats a small percentage of its sewage and for many years activists have called on the authorities to provide better sanitation services in the country. Officials have already admitted that they won’t meet their goal of treating 80 percent of the sewage entering the bay, with the most likely figure set at around 65. This has even led to some speculation about moving the Games’ sailing venues further into the ocean, where the water might be cleaner. There is still hope that emergency measures may be implemented to clean up water venues ahead of the Games, though that is hardly going to leave an Olympic legacy for the population that is most affected by these troubles. At test events, between 7 and 9 percent of the sailors participating have been getting sick – double the Environmental Protection Agency’s maximum illness rate for swimming, which is 3.6 percent. READ MORE: Budget cuts and raw sewage crippling Rio 2016 preparations The USA Olympic rowing team has already taken steps to fight the problem, fitting themselves with high-tech training unibody suits knitted with an antimicrobial finish. The suits are supposed to protect against flesh-eating diseases and other pathogens found in the water. However, it seems even that won’t be enough to fight the danger of viruses and bacteria. Katherine Mena, who researches waterborne pathogens at the UT-Houston School of Public Health, told Wired, “They will literally be immersing themselves in very high levels of pathogens. The infection risk will be pretty high.” Some athletes are already planning to arrive early to build up their immunity, while others are going to wait until as close to the competition as possible to enter the water. The USA rowing team will set up hand-washing stations for rowers for when they leave the water in order to help mitigate the pollution. Their special bacteria-killing suit can’t destroy certain bacteria quickly enough, however, and they are almost certain to have water splashes onto their face and into their eyes and mouth while competing. In Rodrigo de Freitas, where the rowers will compete, athletes in test events poured bleach onto their water bottles and rinsed with antibacterial mouthwash between events. Health concerns surrounding the Zika virus have already led to calls for the World Health Organization to push for Rio Games to be postponed or relocated.

Impressive Lions roar to a deserved Super Rugby playoff spot (0.01/3) The Johannesburg-based side continued the upward growth curve they have been on over the past four years since Johan Ackermann took over as coach by adding further milestones in their Super Rugby journey. For the first time in their participation in the competition‚ the Lions became the first side this year to secure a quarterfinal spot following their impressive 37-10 win over the at Ellis Park. With that‚ the Lions also topped the combined Super Rugby log after accumulating 47 points‚ one more than second-placed Kiwi side‚ the Chiefs. “We have at least secured that No1 spot on the log to at least get a home quarterfinal here. That is just reward‚” a proud Ackermann said after the game. “We are grateful for how the season went and where we are now. But we have to stay humble and start over on Monday again.” Another small milestone the Lions achieved‚ which the team was not aware of after their convincing victory over the Sharks‚ was that for the first time since their participation in Super Rugby they will finish the season having won 10 matches in the competition. Their win against the Sharks was their tenth of the season after 13 matches – on par only with the Chiefs and another New Zealand side‚ the Crusaders. “That is a new fact for me and I must say‚ it is a great feeling‚” Lions stand-in captain said about the feat. “We have a really special bunch of guys. If we think and work as a family‚ a brotherhood‚ and not do things individually‚ special things will happen.” Kriel beamed with pride at the team's feat of securing a playoff spot with still two weeks of action remaining before the knockout stages of the competition. His teammates were also not aware of the fact that a bonus point victory on Saturday night will ensure that the side is at home at Ellis Park for the playoff stages of the competition. “Most of the players in the changeroom didn't even know that we had secured a playoff spot‚” Kriel said. “We just take everything week by week. We were just grateful for the win. To get five points was a bonus‚ especially against the Sharks. “It's great to have the win and also great to have secured that playoff spot.” The Sharks admitted to have had the going tough against an unrelenting Lions side. It was always going to be an uphill battle for the visitors if they hoped to stage a comeback in the second half after being down 0-27 at the half-time break. “It was a very tough night‚” said Sharks director of rugby Gary Gold. “It was a very poor first half performance from us. But I also think credit must go to the Lions who took their opportunities. “They fed off our mistakes. The quality team that they are‚ they took advantage of that and hurt us.” After the clock had struck midnight in SA on Saturday night‚ the Bulls' carriage turned into a pumpkin as they were embarrassed by the Jaguares in Buenos Aires. A poor performance by Nollis Marais' charges in cold and wet weather conditions in Argentina saw the team go down 29-11 to a more organised and calm Jaquares team which was ably led by captain Agustin Creevy‚ who scored two tries for the Argentinians. The victory was the third of the season for the Jaguares‚ with all their three of their scalps being SA teams – the others coming earlier in the season against the Cheetahs and Southern Kings. The defeat dashed any hope that may have remained at Loftus Versfeld that the young Bulls team could reach the playoff stages of the competition. It was also not a good weekend for one other SA team. The Kings were beaten 18-48 by defending champs the Highlanders in . It was smiles for the Cheetahs who narrowly beat the Western Force with a narrow 30-29 score in Bloemfontein. 10 12yo and 7yo sisters take grandma’s car, police on high-speed chase — RT America Initially reported as a kidnapping, the grandmother eventually had to pick up the 7-year-old about 40 miles away from home, while leaving the 12-year-old in police custody. The grandmother had awakened from a nap Thursday afternoon only to witness her Chevrolet Cruze being driven away from her home in New Caney, Texas. The car was then identified by the Conroe Police Department around 5:30 p.m. some 20 miles away from the grandma’s driveway, in the city of Conroe, according to KPRC. Then things got crazy. The 12-year-old girl took off, leading city police and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase westbound on State Highway 105. A witness told KPRC that their car’s side-view mirror was knocked off by the budding carjacker, who then took the car and her little sister onto the highway’s shoulder, heading into oncoming traffic. The estimated 11-mile chase ended once OnStar, a subsidiary of General Motors, took control of the stolen vehicle and stalled it at Montgomery High School. "I am amazed no one was killed or seriously injured," County Attorney JD Lambright told KTRK. "Of course the police car, being cautious, every time that it would come to an intersection, the police car slowing down drastically to make sure that he didn't or they didn't, a whole string of police cars didn't hit anyone. But I can't say the same thing about this 12-year-old driver. " Lambright, who watched the police dashcam footage, told the Houston Chronicle that police reached 126mph during the chase. The 12-year-old now faces charges of evading arrest and theft of property over $30,000, a third-degree felony. Based on the preteen’s actions, Lambright doubts she will be released from Montgomery County Juvenile Detention Center after she sees a judge on Tuesday. Montgomery Police Chief James Napolitano confirmed to the New York Daily News that three cars were side-swiped and that upon the arrest of the girl, she told officers she was on her way to see her 18-year-old boyfriend.

131 killed as 2 blasts rip through Ramadan crowds at Baghdad shopping areas (PHOTOS, VIDEO) — RT News Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan confirmed that the first blast had come from a suicide truck bomb. "It was like an earthquake. I wrapped up my goods and was heading home when I saw a fireball with a thunderous bombing," eyewitness Karim Sami told AP. "I was so scared to go back and started to make phone calls to my friends, but none answered. " Eyewitnesses said on Twitter that many shops burned down as a result of the explosions, and there are fears that the number of casualties could grow. Karrada, an upper middle class district in the Iraqi capital, is mostly inhabited by Shia, but also has quite a large Christian minority. The area becomes very busy after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. Shortly after the explosion hit Karrada, eyewitnesses said that a second blast targeted the Shaab neighborhood, which is located in the northern part of the city. AP said that at least five people were killed in that bombing and another sixteen were injured. Meanwhile, Sky News Arabia said a suspected homemade explosive device was used to hit a market. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has in an online statement claimed responsibility for the attack in Karrada, Baghdad. The tactics resemble Islamic State’s signature, as the terrorists frequently choose Shia-populated civilian areas in the capital as targets. Iraqi security officials are attempting to restore order amid the state of panic that has ensued following the attacks, Altaf Ahmad, a local journalist, told RT. “Major roads leading to the venue of the explosion [in Karrada] have been cut off. We know that the car bomb that went off in the area that is known to be crowded at this time. After sunset, after the break of fast during the holy month of Ramadan many people start to go out... We are expecting that the number could rise to 100 casualties,” Ahmad said. Meanwhile, Abayomi Azikiwe, editor at Pan-African News Wire, said the pattern of bombing in Baghdad reminded him of what happened in Istanbul. “There is some affirmation that Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. This follows a pattern for the last week with the attack in Istanbul. The sectarian divisions inside the country have exacerbated and there’s been a reaction on both sides,” Azikiwe told RT. He also noted that Islamic State had suffered tremendous losses over the past several months and could be committing such attacks in order to avenge their retreat. “They moved to other geopolitical regions, in Libya, for example, in western part of the country. A lot of these attacks are done for propaganda reasons,” he added. “[These attacks] definitely appear to be coordinated.” Earlier this week, at least 12 people were killed and 32 injured in another suicide attack west of Baghdad, where an attacker wearing a suicide vest targeted a Sunni mosque in Abu Ghraib. READ MORE: At least 12 killed in suicide attack on Abu Ghraib mosque Islamic State was recently pushed out of Fallujah by Iraqi forces, but the terrorist group still controls Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, which is located in northern Iraq. 2016-07-04 00:00 www.rt.com

Stampede, panic in Paris fanzone after firecracker let off (VIDEO) — RT Sport The incident occurred at the fanzone located at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, videos posted from the scene showed. The sounds of blasts can be heard on the footage, with people screaming and running away from the football screens in an attempt to escape the site. Several serious injuries have been reported by Le Parisien daily, while some people also suffered minor sprains and strains. People in the crowd knocked down several safety barriers and stalls while fleeing, according to L’Equipe newspaper. France remains on high alert since a state of emergency was declared by the French government in November in the wake of a set of deadly terror attacks on the capital that claimed lives of 130 people and injured hundreds more. In April it was extended to the end of July to cover the Euro-2016 football championship hosted by France. In another effort to boost security, France enabled police officers to carry guns while off-duty. The decision was triggered by an assassination of a police officer and his girlfriend at their home in the Paris suburb. The attacker, who was shot dead by the police in a raid, claimed allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). France has not been the only target for terrorist attacks. On March 22, twin suicide bombings hit Brussels Airport and Maelbeek metro station in Belgium, killing 32 people. Last week an attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport left at least 42 people dead and injured 239 more.

13 Binge drinking & eating leaves N. Korean leader overweight – report — RT News Kim has never been noted for his slender figure, but he has been piling on the pounds over the last four years. A South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) report to a parliamentary committee revealed that the leader is suffering from insomnia and paranoia, which are driving him to eat and drink more and more. "He keeps a close tab on any potential threats to his power, including the military, and he is obsessed with ensuring his personal safety,” Lee Cheol- Woo told journalists after the NIS briefing for lawmakers, AFP reported. Lee mentioned that Kim’s weight was around 90 kilograms when he took over from his father, but by 2014, he had tipped the scales at 120 kilos. This year, he is already weighing in at 130 kilos. "Because of his habitual binge eating and drinking, he is likely to develop adult diseases," Lee said, citing the report compiled by the NIS, which also mentioned that Kim was suffering from insomnia. READ MORE: The Kim is Back: North Korean leader makes first public appearance in a month Kim disappeared from public life briefly in 2014, with rumors that he was suffering from gout or diabetes. However, an official from Pyongyang said that the country’s leader had actually injured his knee while taking part in a military drill. "He injured his ankle and knee around late August or early September while drilling because he is overweight. He limped around in the beginning but the injury worsened," said the source, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. "He ordered all the generals to take part in drills and he took part, too. They were crawling and running and rolling around, and he pulled a tendon. " Kim’s father Kim Jong-Il and grandfather Kim Il-Sung both suffered from obesity, while like Kim, they also smoked. Kim’s father and grandfather both died of heart attacks. The NIS was able to confirm that Kim’s aunt Kim Kyong-Hui is still alive, despite her fall from grace after her husband (Kim’s uncle) was purged and executed in 2013 on charges of treason and corruption. "She fell into alcoholism after the execution of her husband, but she is now under special care in Pyongyang's suburbs," Lee said

Germany may face Istanbul-style attacks as IS fighters find way to Europe – spy chief — RT News The biggest threat to Germany’s security is the possibility of terror attacks similar to the shooting and bombing that took place in Istanbul last week, Hans Georg Maassen, the head of country’s domestic intelligence agency, said in an interview to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Saturday. “We can't rule out attacks like those in Istanbul also happening in our country,” Maassen said. The German Special Services know about at least 17 Islamic State militants who entered the European Union pretending to be refugees, Maassen added. “There is strong evidence that… 17 people have arrived under Islamic State instructions," Maassen said. The majority of terrorists on the list were either neutralized, or are currently behind bars. In particular, two of the suspects were killed in November during the Paris attacks. IS has recently suffered a number of military defeats in the Middle East, but it didn’t affect the intentions of those who manage to find way into Europe, Massen said. Attacks in Europe are gaining special importance for IS leaders and are used as a tool to show their followers that “we are still here,” he added. In June, Maassen told Reuters that Germany was on high alert for potential attacks. The German BfV intelligence agency carried out a few drills to get prepared, with several attacks already prevented. Three Syrian men were detained in June on suspicion of having planned multiple large-scale attacks in the German city of Dusseldorf. Maassen added that the agency is on the lookout for possible lone wolf, radicalized attackers. German authorities checked some 400 suspected jihadists among the refugees, but the majority of the cases turned out to be false alarms. 200,000 refugees have arrived in Germany since January, and over the last year, the number of migrants who arrived totaled more than 1 million people.

‘Their only religion is terrorism’: Bangladeshi PM slams ISIS hostage-taking attack — RT News “ It was an extremely heinous act. What kind of Muslims are these people? They don't have any religion, their only religion is terrorism, ” Hasina said in a nationally televised speech. Addressing the nation for the second time in one day, she called Islam “ a religion of peace, ” and said that terrorists “ are maligning its name. ” The Bangladeshi PM said that 13 hostages were rescued from the besieged Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, frequented by foreigners, while six gunmen were killed and one was captured alive in the raid conducted by Bangladeshi commandos. “ Because of the effort of the joint force, the terrorists could not flee, ” Hasina said, vowing to fight Islamist insurgency in the country. “ People must resist these terrorists. My government is determined to root out terrorism and militancy from Bangladesh ,” she said. Bangladesh authorities said that 22 people were killed in the attack, among them 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, and two policemen, who were killed in a gunfire exchange. “ Most of [the hostages] were killed mercilessly with sharp weapons last night, ” Army Brigadier General Naim Asraf Chowdhury said , noting that the majority of the hostages were killed before the police operation began. Authorities have released the nationalities of the 20 deceased hostages. Nine of them were Italian, seven were Japanese, one was Indian, two were Bangladeshi residents and one was a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, the country's Joint Force Command said Saturday. All the attackers were Bangladeshi citizens, Police Inspector General Shahidul Hoque told CNN. He also said police had previously tried to arrest five of the assailants, who were known to authorities as militants. Hasina declared two days of national mourning for the victims of the attack. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militant group said they were behind the attack through their media branch, Amaq, which posted photos showing the cafe from the inside during the attack on an ISIS-affiliated website. The attack in Dhaka is the latest case of a gradual escalation of militant violence in the mostly Muslim country over the past three years. Most attacks were until now machete-style beheadings, carried out by militants singling out individual victims, mostly foreigners, social activists, LGBT community representatives and members of religious minorities. ISIS and al Qaeda claimed responsibility for many of these assaults.

‘Christian school head must be educated about the Muslim religion’ “Although it seems like a half-hearted apology‚ I think we have no option but to accept it and let the matter go to rest‚” said Abramjeee. “What we need to do is to sit down with him and educate him what the Muslim religion is all about. I think he has very little knowledge of the Muslim faith. “Over the next few days I’ll engage the Muslim faith community to have a meeting with him but‚ for now‚ we accept the apology.” On Wednesday‚ the King's School in Linbro Park came under scrutiny after Abramjee wrote to the school principal‚ the Gauteng MEC for education and the cultural‚ religious and linguistics rights commission‚ questioning the correspondence sent on June 20 by Bob Fuller‚ school’s head of student affairs. Abramjee posted the letter on Twitter and it was greeted with outrage when it surfaced this week on social media. The letter read: “I’m sure most of you know that much of the property around the school is owned by a Muslim businessman. He has done a lot of development near the school‚ and about two years ago he started construction of a mosque. “Each day‚ the Muslim call to prayer could be heard from the school‚ said Bob Fuller‚ and it reminded him about the “vast difference between Muslim and Christian prayers”. “Muslims pray in the hope that it might earn them salvation‚ while Christians pray because we already have assurance of salvation.” In his apology‚ the letter’s author said: “However‚ I realise that the way in which I expressed these ideas may have been insensitive. As Christians‚ our faith requires us to treat all people of all faiths with respect and dignity. If my words did not reflect this‚ I apologise. " Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi wants the school’s board to take action against Fuller because he found the contents of the letter to be reckless and dangerous.

6 reasons why people are celebrating the end of Nancy Grace’s ‘horrible’ show — RT Viral The controversial TV host has been accused of scaremongering hysteria and aggressive interrogations during her 12- year reign at HLN, sister network of CNN. Grace’s contract will expire in October, news that is apparently music to the ears of many. Grace, a former prosecutor and so-called “victim rights” advocate, is infamous for a number of disastrous, and often horrifying, attacks and witch hunts in the name of pushing buttons and getting ratings. Here are six of her most infamous moments. 1) Melinda Duckett Grace cross-examined Melinda Duckett about her missing two-year old son Trenton on CNN in 2006, and even accused her of dodging questions, despite being advised not to disclose certain information. The young mother committed suicide the next day. Grace aired the interview, adding a box informing the viewers that she had been found dead. Duckett’s family later sued CNN and reached a settlement where Grace would set up a $200,000 trust in Trenton’s name. 2) Paris Hilton During a broadcast about Paris Hilton’s probation violation, Grace stopped the show to call her producer out over the provocative footage of the heiress playing in the background. After the offending images had been removed, Grace scolded her producer on air again, claiming Hilton got away with her bad girl ways because “part of the problem is – back to you Elizabeth in the control room – people like you, and others are blinded by celebrity.” 3) Elizabeth Smart The incredible grace of kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart clashed with the “mindless callousness” of Nancy Grace, which the Columbia Journalism Review declared “might have set a new standard.” While Smart thought she was on the show to talk about a bill about a sex offenders’ registry, Grace kept asking her about her abduction, including the veil her kidnapper made her wear in public, until the Utah woman shut down the “insane” lawyer from Atlanta. 4) Horrible Hashtags One of Grace’s “talents” seems to be her creative use of hashtags that may instill shock, fear and occasionally hilarity. 5) 2Chainz During Grace’s interview of rapper 2Chainz over the “evils” of marijuana and his alleged role in influencing young people to smoke it, she showed footage of a mother giving cannabis to her child and claimed legalization allow anyone to get their hands on it. 2Chainz responded with a reality check that got the internet buzzing with glee: “Umm, I’m not sure if you know but everybody has the ability to get their hands on pot right now, whether it's legal or not.” 6) George Zimmerman Surprisingly, Nancy Grace’s “victim rights” advocacy extended to unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, who railed against the man who killed him while “standing his ground,” George Zimmerman. However, her comments didn’t exactly endear her to #BlackLivesMatter activists. Reacting to comments made by Zimmerman’s attorney during closing arguments that his half-Hispanic, half-Jewish vigilante client wanted to “get back to his life,” Grace launched into a tirade: “Give Zimmerman back his life? He’s out on bond, driving through Taco Bell every night having a churro. Who’s going to give life back to Trayvon Martin?” She also repeated the slur “c**n” that Zimmerman allegedly said on the controversial recording of the killing, even when she had an African- American guest on the program. “I’ll tell you what I think made a difference. When that 9-1-1 tape first came out — and everybody, get ready, this is graphic language — when it first came out that Zimmerman had said ‘f*cking c**n‘ on the 9-1-1 call, to me, that was open-and-shut that that showed open ill will and hatred. Now they’ve revised it to say he said ‘These punks, they always get away with it.’ I’m wondering if that reinterpretation of what he said made a difference as to a jury finding ill will in Mr. Zimmerman’s heart.”

Gigantic aurora lights up Jupiter’s North Pole, gets caught on camera — RT News The video on NASA’s Facebook page was created by joining many far-ultraviolet images of Jupiter taken at different time by Hubble. “These auroras are very dramatic and among the most active I have ever seen. It almost seems as if Jupiter is throwing a firework party for the imminent arrival of Juno,” Jonathan Nichols from the University of Leicester said in a statement. Jupiter has already attracted scientists’ attention with its nature wonders such as its colorful storms, the most famous being the Great Red Spot, but turns out it has more mysteries and beauty in store. Created when high-energy particles emerge in the atmosphere, this aurora reminds of Earth’s lightning ball or a thunder-cloud slowly rotating over Jupiter, mesmerizing and absolutely stunning. These auroras are the most active and brightest ever detected by the Hubble Telescope, having the intensity thousand times higher than those observed on Earth. This is explained by the fact that northern lights on Jupiter are created not only with the help of the Sun that sends solar wind to the planet, but also with Jupiter’s volcanic moon, Io, that also delivers charged particles to the atmosphere. Apart from that, Jupiter’s magnetosphere is nearly 20,000 times stronger than the Earth’s which also adds up to the extreme intensity of the local northern lights. Meanwhile Juno is getting closer to the biggest planet, planning to arrive on July 4. Juno is going to measure the properties of the solar wind and will combine its observations with those made by Hubble. The findings scientist hope to obtain are to help understand how the sun and other sources of charged particles influence auroras. Juno launched in 2011 also aims to find out if there is a solid core lying beneath the thick atmosphere and is the first one to travel through Jupiter’s dangerous radiation belts.

Jailed bankers, gender equality & majestic fjords With their volcanic victory clap and Viking brand of football, Iceland has seemingly come in from the cold isolation of the North Atlantic and entered the hearts of everyone who has ever rooted for the little guy. But in truth, Iceland as a nation has been awesome for ages, punching well above its weight long before it’s football team rocked expectations at the European championships in France. Here are just a couple of reasons to love the volcanic island, home to little more than 330,000 people and 130 active volcanoes: Jailed ‘banksters’ responsible for financial meltdown Iceland remains one of the only nations to put their money where their mouth is and place the financial “fat cats ” responsible for their country’s economic demise behind bars. As in other countries, the Icelandic taxpayer has had to pay a high price for the failure of the banks. But where financial bosses got off with barely a slap on the wrist in some nations, Iceland set up a special investigative commission to probe crime within the banking sector. READ MORE: Iceland’s jailed bankers ‘a model’ for dealing with ‘financial terrorists’ It’s the least that could be done after three of the island’s main banks ran up debts of around $50 billion. To date, 29 bankers have been jailed for the 2008 crash, including the former head of “bad bank” Kaupthing, Hreidar Mar Sigurdsson, as well as Larus Welding and Gudmundur Hjaltason of the failed bank Glitnir. The ex- CEO of Landsbankinn, Sigurjon Arnason, was also convicted for market manipulation. Football heroics and ‘volcanic clap’ celebrations Iceland has exceeded all expectations by reaching the Euro 2016 quarter- finals. It’s one of the most unlikely underdog stories ever written given the island’s population is miniscule and 200 times less than its next opponents, France. In fact, the country’s pool to choose players from is so small that if you’re an Icelandic male you have about a 2,000-to-1 shot at making the team. Not only are Iceland three games away from Euro glory, but they have blazed a trail through the tournament that will live long in the memory. With approximately 8 percent of the country’s population filling the stadium and providing cacophonous Viking support, the 23-man squad are unbeaten and even knocked out eternal football “favorites” England. Iceland appreciates its women For seven years in a row Iceland has topped the World Economic Forum’s index which ranks countries in terms of gender equality. The list measures the gender gap across the economic, education, health and political spectrum. While Iceland has not completely eradicated gender inequality, it’s doing a pretty good job. In 2015, the North Atlantic nation was first in the global index, as well as in areas of economic, educational and political participation. “As of 2009, the country has fully closed its educational gender gap and ranks first in the political empowerment sub-index. In Iceland, 41 percent of parliamentarians are women, 44 percent of ministers are women and, out of the last 50 years, 20 were spent with a female head of state,” the report states. Iceland’s strides towards a more female-friendly nation may come as no surprise, since the first woman president in the world was also elected there. Icelandic music is off the charts For such a small country, Iceland has made an indelible mark on music. Perhaps the nation’s most recognizable contemporary artist is Bjork, who infamously took umbrage at the press getting all up in her grill. Oh, the songstress also has 14 Grammy nominations, four MTV Music Awards and two NME statues – to name but a few moments of recognition during a career spanning three decades. Other Icelandic artists to grace the music industry with their incredible sounds include ethereal Reykjavík rockers Sigur Ros, FM Belfast, Jonsi, Seabear and Hjaltalin. Majestic, picturesque landscape Home to more than 130 volcanoes, Iceland has one of the most unique, diverse and jaw-dropping landscapes on the planet. The 40,000-square mile island has plenty to excite nature lovers, be it the spectacular fjords to the north of the country, the aurora borealis, glaciers or icy peaks. Visitors can also become acquainted with the mighty volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which brought Europe to a standstill in 2010 with its explosion of ash. Cheap flights And if that wasn’t enough for people to throw their loving arms around Iceland, the country’s low-cost airline Wow Air is now offering super cheap flights from the US to Europe.

Bottom 99% has best income year in 17 years – but top 1% did twice as well, study finds — RT America The bottom 99 percent saw a second consecutive year of income recovery, taking into account inflation, since the Great Recession that began in 2007, according to economist Emmanuel Saez, who released a new report for the Washington Center for Equitable Growth. The analysis was based on Internal Revenue Service data on pre-tax earnings in America. Yet Saez found that despite the rise, "a full recovery in income growth for the bottom 99 percent remains elusive. " "After a large decline of 11.6 percent from 2007 to 2009, real incomes of the bottom 99 percent of families registered a negligible 1.1 percent gain from 2009 to 2013, and then grew by 6.0 percent from 2013 to 2015," wrote Saez, a professor of economics at the University of California-Berkeley. Since the Great Recession officially ended in 2009, the bottom 99 percent has "recovered only about sixty percent of their income losses due to that severe economic downturn," he wrote. The top one percent, meanwhile, did much better in 2015 than the bottom 99 percent, Saez found. "The share of income going to the top 1 percent of families—those earning on average about $1.4 million a year—increased to 22.0 percent in 2015 from 21.4 percent in 2014," Saez said. The top 10 percent of income earners fared well, too. Those making an average of around $300,000 a year saw their share of income increase "to 50.5 percent in 2015 from 50.0 percent in 2014, the highest ever except for 2012," Saez wrote. For the top one percent, incomes adjusted for inflation went up from $990,000 in 2009 to $1,360,000 in 2015, a 37-percent increase, according to Saez. For the bottom 99 percent, incomes went up from $45,300 in 2009 to $48,800 in 2015, a 7.6-percent increase. The top one percent of families took in 52 percent of total real income growth per family from 2009 to 2015, Saez reported, while the bottom 99 percent of families had 48 percent of total real income growth. "This uneven recovery is unfortunately on par with a long-term widening of inequality since 1980, when the top 1 percent of families began to capture a disproportionate share of economic growth," Saez wrote. Saez also said that higher tax rates for top income earners — which came into effect in 2013 following a tax deal negotiated by President Barack Obama with congressional Republicans — will do little to stem worsening income inequality in the US. "The higher top tax rates, which started in 2013, did not prevent broadly shared economic growth from picking up in 2014 and especially 2015," Saez wrote "At the same time, they did not have a significant impact on reducing pre-tax income inequality. ... Therefore, it seems unlikely that U. S. income concentration will fall much in the coming years, absent more drastic policy changes. " While the Great Recession was declared over in 2009, the painful impacts have lingered for many, as Saez noted. A recent Harvard University study found that, over the last six years, the number of Americans paying half their salary on rent has grown from 2.1 million to 11.4 million . In the last 35 years, the richest one percent of Americans saw their market income increase 10 times more than the 99 percent, according to recent report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). “Market income in 2013 for households in the top 1 percent was 188 percent higher than it was in 1979,” the CBO said in the report this month . “For households in the bottom four income quintiles, market income was 18 percent higher in 2013 than it was in 1979.”

Russian geeks make chemistry cool by turning themselves into elements (PHOTOS) — RT Viral The team , with the fitting name of ArtNauka (“ art science ” in Russian), came up with a project dubbed “ Superhero from chemistry. ” They say the photo-shoot was actually a social experiment on the scientists themselves , as they had to literally become the element they represented. “ What if we immerse the scientist in reactions and elements, not the other way around? How can we make them really experience chemistry? Well, by making them chemistry! ” the group says in describing the key idea behind the shoot. The result of their work is at hand – these juicy photographs look more like makeovers from a superhero-themed article in some high-fashioned magazine than something related to science. And, as it turns out, so much the better for the aim of the project, which is to popularize science and make it more comprehensible to the broader public. The group says the trickiest part of the photo-shoot was to actually find make-up artists who could bring their ideas to life, as knowing what, for instance, hydrogen is – whether it’s soft or solid, what it’s used for, and how to portray that – is rarely something your average make-up artist has a clue about. In addition, the shooting itself involved the use of real fire and liquid nitrogen, which could be too much for not only make-up specialists... But enthusiasm won out! This latest photo-shoot is just one of a number of projects in the group’s portfolio, however. The team, which consists of actual scientists, licensed physicists, chemists, mathematicians, engineers, and a molecular biologist, creates live scientific shows for Russia’s main state TV channel, Channel 1, and other media platforms. They also take part in festivals, lectures, and even molecular cuisine workshops. Among other things, the group participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge – the viral “ amusement ” of 2014. ArtNauka’s founder, Nikolay Novoselov, did it chemistry-style, using liquid nitrogen for his stunt instead of ice. Superhero stuff, indeed. But the gang went even further and created an entire show using liquid nitrogen in which they displayed what the substance can do, albeit while freezing your toes off. The group notes with pity that, increasingly, marketing specialists have more influence on the public nowadays than scientists do, which leads to jaw-dropping results. “ People start fearing unlikely things, from sugar, preservatives, and GMO, to artificial intelligence. Companies toy with these fears and could care less about educating the public, while scientists deal only with research and development hidden in their labs. We therefore see a great need to popularize and channel the truth to the masses, ” the scientists stress, adding that their main goal is to teach the public what science is through entertainment. And why not? We do all like to play.

23 Burial of apartheid victim brings peace to grandson Hopewell Sambo‚ 17‚ was speaking at the funeral of Sambo‚ Selby Mavuso and Sizwe Kondile at Freedom Park‚ Pretoria‚ on Friday. They had been killed during the 1980s and 1990s but‚ like other uMkhonto we Sizwe cadres and South Africans‚ their bodies had either been destroyed or not found. Hopewell said it was a privilege to be related to Sambo and was happy that his grandfather had been honoured and laid to rest at Freedom Park. “But some of the family [members] said it’s not enough.” “I feel that what he fought and died for worked because racism is over. “It’s been great to hear all these things that I didn’t know about my grandfather. But it made me angry and frustrated to hear how he died.” Sambo was arrested at his home in Steenbok village‚ Mpumalanga‚ in 1991 after police suspected him of bringing weapons into South Africa. He was violently interrogated and died. According the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report‚ former death squad commander Eugene de Kock received a call from Flip de Beer‚ the Komatipoort security branch commander‚ telling him that a suspect had died of a botched tubing and the use of excessive force during interrogation. He asked for De Kock’s help in disposing of the body. As commander of the unit based at Vlakplaas‚ De Kock called Johannes Swart‚ Kobus Klopper and Nicholaas Vermeulen and a Charlie Chiat to assist De Beer‚ according to the report. They picked up Sambo’s body at Middelburg and took it to the explosives range at Verdacht training camp. The next day they placed explosives on the body and blew it up. They combed the area and gathered “whatever bits of the body that could be found” and blew them up again and again. The four applicant were granted amnesty. De Kock was given six years imprisonment.

Muslim group break Ramadan fast with Irish LGBT community — RT Viral In an effort to display “true Islamic ideals,” the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council invited a whole host of people from outside the faith to share in the spirit of the holy holiday on Saturday. Fasting is observed from dawn to sunset during Ramadan to display self- restraint and is one of the five pillars of Islam. During the day, participants in the holy event must refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, sex, and other pleasures until nightfall. READ MORE: #RamadanProblems: How to fast where the sun never sets “As more than one billion Muslims worldwide celebrate Ramadan by fasting and appreciating the blessings given to us it is equally important for the Irish Muslim community to reach out to our neighbors as an example of true Islamic ideals,” said Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri, imam and chairman of the council. The shared Iftar dinner, the meal when the fast is ended, took place in Dublin and was also attended by Jewish holocaust survivor and guest speaker Tomi Reichental. Dr. Al-Qadri has been an outspoken supporter of the LGBT community in Ireland, likening discrimination against gay and transgender people to that experienced by Muslims. Following the Orlando shootings at a gay nightclub in Florida, he told the Irish Examiner that he stood with the LGBT community. “I stand with the LGBT community and I am against the marginalization of any group,” he said. “It should not have happened. We are a minority ourselves, we understand what discrimination is.”

According to Le Parisien , police carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious car parked near the stadium. Reports on social media suggest people have been prevented from approaching the area. It is not know why police targeted the vehicle, but the incident comes months after terrorists with links to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) exploded suicide vests in the Saint-Denis area last November. At that time, the French international soccer team was playing Germany in a friendly when three explosions rocked the Parisian suburb.

27 10yo Palestinian girl reports from West Bank to highlight her people’s plight — RT News

Janna Jihad, as she is known, is something of a veteran. She began her reporting career at the age of seven. “There were not enough journalists covering things that happened, like when my friend was killed and when lots of people were injured. Others were arrested and things like that, and it was not reported by anybody,” she told RT. Janna was referring to the death of her cousin Mustafa, who was killed by a gas canister, while one of her uncles, Rushdie Tamimi, also died after being shot in the stomach by a bullet that pierced his kidney. It is no coincidence that Janna became interested in journalism, as her Uncle Bilal is a photographer who has captured the violent methods used by Israeli soldiers in the village of Nabi Saleh where they both live. Just when you thought this mercurial child couldn’t have any more surprises up her sleeve, well she does. Not content with just reporting in her native Arabic, she also produces material in English, which she has learnt while studying at school. “I report in English because English is the world language and I can send my message to the whole world,” she mentioned. Janna, who is in the fourth grade, takes her school work very seriously and would not contemplate missing lessons in order to film material for her blog or reports. “After school I can go and make a report on any village or any place, but my future is my school and if I don’t learn about my history, there will never be freedom, there will never be peace and children in Palestine will not be able to live like those around the world,” she told RT. We smelled a lot of gas Reporting from demonstrations and protests can be a dangerous occupation, especially when one takes the heightened tensions between the Palestinians and Israeli security forces into account. Janna admits that her size and age makes it easy for her to avoid the soldiers, but says she’s had a few brushes with trouble all the same. She recalls a protest when Palestinians were trying to reach a spring, but were pushed back by Israeli troops. “The army began to target us with tear gas, and I felt that we were in a cloud of tear gas. It was a very difficult time for us. We smelled a lot of gas,” she said. “In the end we were able to run away, but it was very difficult.” Like any good journalists, Janna learns from her experience and showed an RT film crew some of the essential pieces of equipment she carries with her – like remedies to help her combat the effects of tear gas. One video in particular shows the brutal world that Janna exists in. She is standing next to a young boy just a year younger than her who is lying on the ground motionless. “He has been hit by a rocket,” Janna explains in her report. Janna’s message is one of peace – something that she hopes will eventually come to Palestine. “Our God promised us that Palestine would be free one day. I hope that peace will be here and Palestine will be like the whole world, ” she explained, recalling all the bloodshed and killings that have taken place in recent times. Janna has had to grow up quickly, and some would say too quickly. The fourth grader admits that she would prefer to be playing with her friends and would rather not “be in a field where there is shooting or killing.” However, she has had to adjust to her surroundings. After she finished speaking to RT, the film crew followed her outside as she approached a group of heavily armed Israeli soldiers. Not even the apparent sound of gunfire could put her off as she approached them to deliver a message. “Why do come in the night? I can’t sleep at night because you are coming every night.” 2016-07-04 00:01 www.rt.com

Ajax put in offer to purchase Tuks winger Thabo Mosadi “We are in the market for another two or three attacking players but the deal with Mosadi has not been done yet. There are some complications‚” De Sa added. Mosadi has been a regular for AmaTuks through their four seasons in the Premier Soccer League but one of many expected to leave the club now that they have been relegated from the top-flight. Ajax‚ having sold Abbubaker Mobara and Riyaad Norodien to Orlando Pirates‚ now have something of a war chest to strengthen their squad for the season after a disappointing finish outside of the top eight. De Sa said there was still a fair amount of time to make some purchases before the transfer window closes at the end of August. “I’m particularly looking for two good wingers; that’s top of my shopping list‚” he said. But the Ajax coach said despite all the media hype around possible moves for the likes of captain Travis Graham and attacking midfield Bantu Mzwakali‚ no offer for their services had yet been received from any other clubs. “I’ve read all the reports but they mean nothing as long as you don’t get any offers on the table. We have had nothing‚” De Sa said. Ajax players return from their holidays on Tuesday to begin the pre-season preparations. They have already signed striker Joaquim Lupeta‚ who was out of contract after a single season at Bidvest Wits.

29 Corruption under ANC now pervades every level of government: Buthelezi Addressing an IFP election campaign rally in Daggafontein in Mpumalanga‚ Buthelezi said that poverty‚ unemployment‚ crime and poor service delivery marred every province of our country. “We should be much further in our journey away from these problems‚ for we have lived under a democracy for 22 years. But those tasked with governing South Africa‚ and administering our democracy‚ have failed to do what they should have. “Over the years‚ they let corruption seep into governance so that now it pervades every level of government‚ from national departments‚ to provincial and local government‚” the IFP leader said. “When we first began to see the evidence of corruption in the ruling party‚ some leaders were honest about it. President Mandela himself spoke to international journalists and lamented (and I quote): ‘Little did we suspect that our own people‚ when they got a chance‚ would be as corrupt as the apartheid regime. That is one of the things that has really hurt us.’ “But two decades later‚ corruption has become so entrenched in the ruling party that even their own members don’t trust the President‚” Buthelezi said‚ adding that scandals were now just everyday news. South Africa’s own President walked under a shadow of corruption charges - charges that were yet to be tested in a court of law‚ he said. “Yet under this kind of leadership‚ the message is clear that abuse of power‚ fraud‚ self-enrichment and laziness will all go unchallenged. The door has been opened to corrupt and greedy officials at every level.”

Marvel transform Trump into ‘big head’ Captain America supervillain (PHOTOS) — RT Viral Featuring in Marvel writer Jason Latour’s first Spider Gwen Annual issue of the year, a character called MODAAK bears an uncanny resemblance to the Republican presidential candidate. The mock-up appears to be a spoof of MODOK – a fictional mobile organism designed by scientists that goes off the rails and becomes a killing machine. While Trump’s appearance as Captain America’s nemesis in the comic can only be speculated to be an allegory for the political situation in the US, the fact that MODAAK stands for “Mental Organism Designed as America’s King” shows just what Marvel thinks of the billionaire businessman. The original MODOK character’s strange appearance prompted a hilarious moment in animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when Thor struggled to describe his enemy. “It’s some kind of… that is a very big head,” the very confused Norse god said. Images from inside Latour’s comic show the tanned supervillain taking a beating from a female Captain America, while uttering the words: “Must make America…” Trump is not the first presidential candidate to feature in a comic. Democrats Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have also been given the comic book treatment by publishers Storm Entertainment. Storm Entertainment president Darren Davis said that the books were not meant to “proselytize for one party, one candidate, or one point of view.” “If we are to be successful, we need to balance our stories and provide an even-handed look at our readers and the process by which they govern… warts and all.”

We are all working for a peaceful KwaZulu-Natal but these killings undermine our work. I am also concerned at the increased incidents of the murder of those who have agreed to stand up as representatives of the community in the forthcoming elections. “We find these totally unacceptable as it undermines our democratic processes. We urge all people of the province to resolve their differences through peaceful means and avoid letting these conflicts turn into violence‚” Kaunda said. ANC Provincial Secretary Super Zuma condemned Mbongo’s killing‚ describing it as an act of corwardness. He added that the ANC was deeply concerned at the killing of its ward candidates as the local government elections drew closer. “The killing of Cde Mbongo comes less than two months after the killing of ANCYL Deputy Regional Chairperson Cde Wandile Ngubeni who was gunned down in eMadadeni Township. “We believe that there is an orchestrated campaign to derail the ANC from an overwhelming victory in the Newcastle area and Amajuba District as a whole. We are calling upon police to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the killers of Cde Thembi. “We are also appealing to police‚ to act swiftly to conclude the investigations of both cases so as to help ensure peace and stability in this area as we move closer to the local government elections. We are also appealing for our members to remain calm and to allow police to conclude their investigations‚” Zuma said. 2016-07-04 00:01 TMG Digital www.timeslive.co.za

The marathon journey to getting your new emoji approved (PHOTOS) — RT Viral The great epoch of the emoji began in Japan back in 1999. Among the first images created were a happy and sad face, along with a rather rudimentary light bulb created by Shigetaka Kurita, a worker with Japanese mobile company NTT docomo. The bright idea was to counter limited text space on early Japanese cellphones while communicating basic messages. The emoji has since whipped up social, cultural and political discussion around the world. “At first, I came up with five or six different faces such as the smiley face,” Kurita explained in an interview with Ignition . “They needed to be dotted to be digitized in the end… I was working with a sense of creating a new alphabet. It was an attempt to create texts rather than a sense of making pictures.” Today there are upwards of 1,600 official emojis and countless other derivatives - like Kim Kardashian’s backside. Unamused face. A new batch of emojis due to be released in June 2016 included: ‘Rolling on the floor’ laughing’, ‘Drooling Face’, the ‘Call Me Hand’ and a Prince. Frustratingly, there is still no ‘Tumbleweed’, but the emoji pipeline has spawned a ‘Selfie’. Unicode Consortium While Kurita laid the initial groundwork, the Unicode Consortium, based out of the San Francisco Bay area, now oversees the approval process for an emoji or digital character. It’s a non-profit corporation, made up of software producers, research institutions, companies such as Google, Facebook and, interestingly, the government of India , who one must approach to get a text or symbol entered into the global lexicon for computer devices. The group’s mantra is to “enable people around the world to use computers in any language” - which means they don’t just deal in those tiny smiley faces you send to your mates on Whatsapp. The emoji does seem to be the subject which generates most interest, though. The consortium operates a system known as the Unicode Standard, which assigns a unique number to a text character or symbol. Thus, Unicode has created a consistent coding ledger used in modern software and computing. For example, the letter ‘A’ has a Unicode number of U+0041 - while the code for the Russian Ruble is U+20BD. The coding system has since been adopted by tech giants Apple, IBM and Microsoft. Creating an Emoji So how do you get new designs past the emoji legislators? Well, it’s a bit of a marathon. After a lengthy application process, which could take at least two years, Unicode estimate that they accept only about 60 new proposals each year. People hoping to have their idea added to the Unicode list must first wade through the reams of already- proposed characters in the pipeline. Duplicate characters or similar designs won’t stand a chance. The consortium’s sprawling website carries a four page form with which applicants must approach the enigmatic ‘Emoji Subcommittee’ - co-chaired by Google’s Mark Davis and Apple’s Peter Edberg. According to the subcommittee , factors taken into consideration before approving emojis include compatibility with different platforms, expected usage, and image distinctiveness. For example, they say, there is no point asking for a ‘Stew’ emoji when one could easily use ‘Pot of Food’. Interestingly, deities apparently make for poor (and most likely divisive) emojis. Which is probably why images of Jesus Christ or Allah are absent from the Unicode world. In 2001, the proposed encoding of Star Trek Klingon Script was rejected for a number of reasons, one of them being the lack of use in published writing. While the individual design and subsequent use of an emoji is left up to companies such as Apple, Twitter, or Google, the consortium’s effective bible of characters guides creators with basic chart images. Social impact Millions of the colourful glyphs are used across social media each day, as evidenced by the constantly updating Emojitracker . Indicative of how emojis have been become a mainstay in society is the growing push for greater diversity among its images - for example, new cultures, national flags, skin tones, and foods. Unicode explain the emoji was never really meant to be anything more than a series of simplistic, generic images, but as the list of new characters grew, so too did the feeling that many people or expressions were being left out. In 2015, the consortium advised on color modifiers for human emojis, paving the way for Apple, one of the biggest emoji vendors, to include racially diverse characters in its iOS 8.3 update. The drive for variety has not only centred on race, but also hair color and food. In 2015, a Spanish rice company set up an ad campaign to have a traditional Paella emoji created. The adverts became some of the most popular in the country, The Local reported. ‘Shallow Pan of Food’ which depicts shrimps and is described as “commonly associated with paella” was approved in the recent Unicode 9.0 update, according to Emojipedia . Meanwhile, redheads are still fighting for their first emoji representation. A Change.org petition set up by Ginger Parrot last year garnered nearly 18,000 signatures demanding ‘glorious gingerness’ become an Apple emoji. “Redheads… they’ve been missed out. Again. If you say you’re going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji into the mix? “Natural redhead may be rare at less than 2 percent of the world’s population, but that is 138,000,000 iPhones waiting to happen,” the petition estimated. Similar petitions have also been created for tacos, the mankini and blow-up sex dolls.

British Prime Minister hopefuls differ greatly on speed of Brexit talks — RT UK Home Secretary Theresa May says Britain needs to establish a clear negotiating position with the EU before triggering Article 50, which would formally begin the process of separation. She reiterated that she would not invoke the article this year if she were successful in her bid to become Britain’s prime minister. May made the comments on Sunday during her first TV interview since announcing her candidacy. She told ITV that “what is important is that we do this in the right timescale and we do it to get the right deal for the UK.” She said the first priority is to secure a deal that not only controls free movement, but is also the best for trading goods and services as well. May, who was part of the “Remain” camp, disputed suggestions that the next Tory leader should be a “Leave” supporter. She argued that the country needs more than a “Brexit Prime Minister,” while stating her intention to unite both sides and ensure there is “a government for all the people.” READ MORE:Will Brexit ever actually happen? There are plenty of signs it won't Andrea Leadsom, the Energy Minister, who is also vying to succeed David Cameron as British prime minister, voiced a very different position on Sunday, saying she would like to see a quick start to the negotiation process. “We need to get on with it, we need to seize the opportunity,” she told BBC television. “It’s about giving certainty to businesses. It’s about saying to the world ‘we’re open for business’. Let’s start getting some free trade agreements started as soon as we can. We need to get on with it, we need to get a grip and make progress.” “The next person to lead this country has to be somebody who believes in the opportunity of leaving the EU,” Leadsom said. She claimed she has the right combination of real world and political experience to “make Britain the greatest country on earth.” Meanwhile, Justice Secretary and prominent Brexiteer Michael Gove, Work and Pensions secretary Stephen Crabb, and Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox have also thrown their hats into the ring. The successful candidate is expected to be announced on September 9. READ MORE:May launches Tory leadership challenge, as Gove & Leadsom make surprise bids

Texas man ambushed & shot en-route to mosque — RT America According to Mohammed Imaduddin, the spokesperson for the Madrasah Islamiah Masjid Noor, the victim had parked his car along the street at around 5:30 am and was walking towards the entrance of the prayer house when the masked assailants appeared. One of them pulled out a gun, shooting the doctor twice, before the gang fled on foot. The victim was able to attract attention by throwing his phone towards the mosque. A scramble then ensued as worshippers and police flooded the scene. The man has been taken to hospital and is expected to recover, though he will be kept there overnight. No suspects or motives have emerged, although officials have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward. “It is very scary right now given the current political climate,” Imaduddin, who was observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan along with the congregation, told local news station ABC 13. “From what I hear, this is the third incident this week in the Houston area involving a Muslim getting shot. This is a community place, we have kids that come here; we have people young and old come here.” A more contentious altercation occurred on Saturday morning outside the Fort Pierce mosque occasionally visited by Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people during a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando last month. Abdul Rauf Khan, an employee of the Muslim rights group Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), says he witnessed the assailant spewing Islamophobic slurs at the victim, whom Khan did not know, before knocking out his teeth and likely breaking his jaw. “He said, ‘You Muslims need to go back to where you came from. He had been drinking. He was smelling bad. It was a vicious attack. He just started throwing punches,” said Khan. Police charged 25-year-old Taylor Anthony Mazzanti with felony battery before releasing him on $3,750 bail. St. Lucie County’s sheriff’s office has denied that the attack was prompted by religious or racial hatred, however. “Interviews by the deputies and supervisors on scene and a written witness statement completed by the victim do not indicate any racially-motivated comments were made by the suspect prior to, during or after the incident,” said Sheriff Ken Mascara in a statement, noting that the original 911 call had been made to report suspicions of a car burglary. The incident has been complicated by an ongoing war of words between county police and the local branch of CAIR, which has accused officials of failing to protect the mosque in the wake of the shooting. The rights group now plans to file a complaint with the US Department of Justice. “This should not have happened. For over two weeks, we have been emphasizing that the community from the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce needs to be offered security from the sheriff’s office. Unfortunately, our requests were repeatedly ignored,” said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, CAIR-Florida’s communications director, following the attack. St. Lucie police have dismissed the accusations of the mosque, which was also attended by Moner Mohammad Abu Salha, a US-born Islamist recruit who detonated himself in Syria in 2014. “The untruthful rhetoric from the mosque and its spokesperson is doing nothing more than trying to bring empathy to their cause, which I hope our community recognizes. My office, including myself and our agency Chaplain, have repeatedly attempted to communicate with the mosque to explore options of working together and there has been no response,” said Mascara.

Bulls brace for bloody Super Rugby battle in Buenos Aires The Argentine side may have won only two matches so far this season‚ but both victories came at the expense of South African teams‚ the Southern Kings and Cheetahs. The Jaguares have also proven to be a tough opponent‚ especially when playing at home. Their discipline‚ however‚ has been their biggest downfall‚ and that is something the Bulls will be looking at when the two sides meet just before midnight (11. 40pm SA-time kickoff) at the Velez Sarsfield Stadium in Buenos Aires. “It’s going to be difficult‚” admitted Bulls coach Nollis Marais. “They have played three good matches and have been a difficult side over there. It will be a big challenge. “They have some discipline issues. Playing there is going to be difficult. But I’m not worried about them‚ but more on what it is that we need to do. Hopefully we can capitalise on the discipline. It’s going to be a breakdown match.” To counter the Jaguares at the breakdown Marais has included hard- grafting flanker Roelof Smit in the starting line up‚ with Jannes Kirsten and Renaldo Bothma providing cover on the bench. Bothma will make his Super Rugby debut for the Bulls should he come on the pitch after joining the Pretoria side from the Sharks. Kirsten will be providing cover at both lock and loose-forward. Reflecting on their previous Super Rugby match – a heavy 20-56 defeat to the Lions – Marais expects improvements from his charges. “We can’t just rely on the maul‚” the Bulls coach said. “Yes‚ that is a big part of the team‚ but we also need to look at different ways to breach the gain line.” One slip-up for the Bulls in their remaining three matches could see them lose grip of any opportunity they may have had of securing a playoff berth. The Pretoria side are lamenting the missed opportunities to gain some more bonus points from their first 12 matches of the competition. “What’s hurting us at the moment is the bonus points‚” Marais admitted. “We talked about it at the beginning of the season … Now all we can do is make sure that we win our next three and hope that somebody else slips up and gives us a chance to get into the finals. “We have a bit of control of our destiny‚ but not what happens with the other sides.” The Jaguares have made six changes to their side that last did duty in their 22-29 defeat to the Kings in Port Elizabeth in May.

Moscow 'secret police grads’ stage luxury car parade, prompt storm of criticism (VIDEO) — RT News The FSB newbies cruising the streets of the Russian capital in black four-wheel drive G-Wagens blocked traffic in their lane several times, while honking their horns for no reason. To help a cameraman take some great shots, they formed a long line from time to time, making it difficult for other vehicles to pass by safely. Meanwhile, young men in white shirts keep protruding from the car windows, joyfully shouting and waving to each other while taking pictures and videos on their cell phones. The footage of the parade was later posted on the internet by its participants, as well as several witnesses. The ostentatious show raised a lot of questions on social media platforms, where users voiced outrage, wondering where the 22-year-old lieutenants, who are supposed to, among other things, focus on fighting corruption, actually got the money to pay for such pricey vehicles. "For four years they were taught conspiracy, corporate ethics, and that one must not disclose secrets,” retired FSB Major General Aleksander Mikhailov told Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP) daily. “Those [riding in these cars] were not intelligence or counter-intelligence agents, but merchants of the first guild,” he pointed out. “ So pompous and arrogant. If that’s how they start their careers, they won’t do any good,” he noted, adding that all of the joyriders should be reprimanded and FSB Academy officials punished. Mikhailov said the fact that the young people uploaded the video of their ride on the internet with their faces clearly visible speaks for itself. “It’s treason with a capital T. Betrayal of the interests of the [intelligence] agency in full. No one knows yet where those guys will be serving. So, how can you download photographs of the already acting FSB agents on the internet?” he told REN TV broadcaster. Another group of “golden boys” came under fire in Moscow in May, when 20-year-old Ruslan Shamsuarov, dubbed “petrol boy” by the Russian media, cruised the streets of downtown in his Gelandewagen along with a group of friends. When traffic police demanded that they pull over, as they had been going way over the speed limit, the youngsters refused to stop and, on the contrary, sped up, provoking some six police squads to chase them through the city. Footage of the chase, which they broadcast live on Periscope, went viral on Russian social media.

20+ girls ‘molested’ in Cologne-style attacks at Swedish rock fest — RT News Police are investigating “a score of cases in which young girls have been molested,” Swedish Aftonbladet daily reported. It said that the alleged attacks occurred during the “Putte i Parken” rock festival in Karlstad in Varmland County, despite enhanced police presence. The women told police they were kissed against their will by a group of young men who groped their breasts and buttocks, SVT reported . The attacks reportedly took place in front of an overcrowded stage during the artists’ performances. “It’s awfully crowded in there in the audience, and then the young guys came up and groped the girls,” Per-Arne Eriksson, duty officer at the police in Varmland, told SVT. According to Per-Arne Eriksson, between seven and eight young men approached the women. Two assailants, aged 16 and 17, were later identified by the girls and were immediately arrested by police. Migrants have been increasingly blamed for sexual crimes in Sweden, where migrant sex gangs have allegedly attacked girls from 12 to 17 years old over the past two summers at the Stockholm music festival. In a leaked police memo, security forces noted that “unaccompanied youth” from the Middle East were behind the crimes, Breitbart reported. Similar attacks have happened elsewhere in Europe. In May, 18 women filed complaints with police in Germany, saying they were sexually assaulted at a musical festival in Darmstadt. Police arrested three refugees from Pakistan at the scene after three of the women immediately reported the assaults. Those attacks came just over two weeks after two female teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were sexually harassed by a group of 10 men during a street festival in Berlin. Europe is currently facing its worst refugee crisis since World War II. Last year alone, some 1.8 million asylum-seekers entered the European Union fleeing war and poverty in Middle Eastern countries, according to data from the EU border agency Frontex. Swedish police revealed on Friday that they will offer young women wristbands with the slogan “POLICEAVSPÄRRAT #tafsainte” [Police cordon, don’t grope] printed on them in Swedish, to prevent sexual assaults. “By wearing these wristbands, young women will be able to make a stand. No one should have to accept sexual molestation. So do not grope. And if you are groped, report it to the police,” Police Chief Dan Eliasson said, according to the press release. A Swedish police report released last month said that, according to a survey carried out by the EU’s rights agency, the country has the worst rates of sexual violence against women in all of Europe. “Sweden tops the new EU Statistics on physical and sexual violence against women, sexual harassment and stalking. The conclusion is that the results are a consequence of Nordic alcohol culture, but also of non- traditional gender roles,” the report said.

ANC turns down parliamentary meeting to discuss SABC chaos DA spokesperson on communications Phumzile Van Damme said the the party had received a response from the ANC's Cedric Frolick‚ Parliament's Chair of Chairs‚ declining the DA’s request. Last week‚ the DA requested a meeting in terms of National Assembly (NA) Rule 223 to have the SABC board‚ the national broadcaster’s COO‚ Hlaudi Motsoeneneg‚ and Communications Minister appear in Parliament to answer for the chaos at the SABC. The Rule allows for parliamentary committees to meet when Parliament is not in session to discuss urgent matters of national importance. “We wrote to the ANC Chief Whip‚ Jackson Mthembu‚ who passed the matter to Frolick‚ who declined the request and indicated that a meeting can only take place only after the election. “This is deeply ironic given that‚ as reported in the Sunday Times today‚ the ANC has indicated that it is committed to investigating the chaos and censorship at the SABC‚” said Van Damme. She said it was now clear for all to see that the ANC was not serious at all about restoring the credibility of the public broadcaster‚ and that the claim of commitment to investigate was merely “a ploy to pull the wool over the publics’ eyes and South Africa's media fraternity”. “The truth is that Mr Motsoeneng was deployed to the SABC to do the ANC’s bidding during an election where the ANC stands to lose major support. Waiting until after the election stands to serve the ANC‚” Van Damme charged. “The ANC wants Minister Muthambi and the SABC Board to investigate Motsoeneng because they know it will be another whitewash. Minister Muthambi and Prof Maghuve are staunch supporters of Mr Motsieneng and have promoted and protected him at every opportunity. “We give the ANC in Parliament one more chance to fix this matter and convene a meeting of the Communications Committee‚ or face being in dereliction of its constitutional duties to conduct oversight over the SABC. “This simply cannot wait until after the election. The problems at the SABC are now‚ and need to the fixed now‚” Van Damme added.

39 Jean-Luc du Plessis can make Stormers flyhalf position his own Du Plessis was thrust into the pivotal role earlier in the season after injuries to Rob du Preez and Kurt Coleman. And the youngster took his chance well with some composed‚ and at times superb‚ performances. The fact that coach Robbie Fleck omitted Du Preez from the Stormers’ touring party to Australia‚ even though he is playing again following a knee injury‚ is a strong indication that the coach favours Du Preez in the long-term. As always the flyhalf will be reliant on his pack performing well and for this match Fleck has chosen the strongest eight he can select at the moment. The Springbok second row combination of Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit are set to continue where they left off against Ireland last weekend. Schalk Burger returns to No 8 after missing the Stormers’ last outing‚ against the Cheetahs in late May‚ through injury. He will also lead the side in the absence of regular co-captains Juan de Jongh and Frans Malherbe. and Siya Kolisi bring international experience to the rest of the back row while Bok prop Vincent Koch starts in place of the injured Malherbe. New Bok Bongi Mbonambi is in at hooker‚ completing a pack that starts with seven Springboks. Only loosehead Oli Kebble has yet to play Test rugby. The Rebels have lost three of their six home games this season but they did record their only ever win over the Stormers on home soil in 2013. “The Rebels are a good side and at one stage they were leading the Australian Conference‚” Fleck said. “They are well balanced and a tough side to beat at home. We found that out in 2013 when we lost a game we thought we should have won. “We are excited because it’s our first proper tour of the tournament and we need it. It’s a short tour but it’s better than a few days to Argentina or Singapore. “There are three games left and we have to give absolutely everything to gain some momentum. We need to find the form we had earlier in the season.” In the basement battle in the SA conference the Cheetahs and Kings have tough assignments against the Western Force and Highlanders respectively. The Force have struggled as much as the Cheetahs in 2016‚ losing 10 of their 12 matches so far and nothing indicates that they should turn it around in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have lost nine of their matches and boast a defensive record almost identical to the Force. Where Franco Smith’s men have been better though‚ is their ability to score tries. The Force have scored a meagre 21 tries this year while the Cheetahs have managed to cross the chalk 40 times in the same number of matches. In Port Elizabeth the Kings shouldn’t stand a chance against New Zealand contenders the Highlanders. But their last match was a 29-22 win over the Jaguares and they also beat the Highlanders in 2013 – the only time the sides have met. The return of breakdown specialist CJ Velleman is a boost for the Kings but the Highlanders‚ as defending champions and one of NZ’s top teams‚ should have too much firepower for the home team.

Free State Stars warns Pirates, Sundowns that Lucky Mohomi ‘won't come cheap’ “There have been many enquiries about him; he had a wonderful season for us. But it has to be a worthwhile deal for us to let him go‚” he told Times Digital on Friday. Mokoena‚ waiting for the arrival of his new French coach‚ Denis Lavagne‚ on Friday‚ said there had been talks with other Premier Soccer League clubs but no prospective deal was yet in place. He did not name the clubs but for the last two months media reports have consistently linked both champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates with the 25-year-old midfielder. Mohomi was a regular starter for Stars in the past season after signing from Ga-Rankuwa United last July. He still has two more years on his contract with Stars so any deal would have to involve a handsome transfer fee. Interest in the rookie defender‚ Justice Chababala‚ was nowhere near the level of the consistent media speculation linking him with a move to Gauteng‚ Mokoena added. “That’s all been largely exaggerated and I don’t think he will be going anywhere soon‚” he said. The Free State club has long been a prolific generator of talent for the top clubs in Gauteng‚ with the likes of Thabo Matlaba‚ Mzikayise Mashaba and Siphiwe Tshababala having all originally begun their professional careers at Stars. The club begin the pre-season preparations next week.

Japan thrashing will build U23 Olympic team’s mental strength, says Da Gama A brace by Shoya Nakajima and goals from Shinya Yajima and Takuma Asano silenced Da Gama's side at Matsumotodaira Park Stadium in Matsumoto on Wednesday after Gift Motupa had put the South Africans ahead from a penalty. South Africa’s U-23s won the Cosafa Cup with a competitive 3-2 victory against Botswana in the final in Windhoek‚ Namibia‚ last Saturday night. They travelled to Japan‚ via Johannesburg‚ on Sunday. Both Japan and South Africa have qualified for the Rio 2016 men’s Olympic football tournament in August. “First and foremost‚ no excuses – Japan were better than us‚” Da Gama said. “Second‚ I think for us‚ the whole preparation coning from a big tournament at the Cosafa‚ flying for more than 24 hours across time zones – it was a bit taxing on the boys. “I thought we did very well for the first 25 minutes‚ and then the players started complaining about heavy legs. “But that’s no excuse. This is all about mental strength. We’re trying to build these players‚ mental strength to the highest possible level. “We’re pushing them through the limits. That’s why I also told them this [the travel] is no excuse. They’ve got to mentally adjust to another level. “So we’d really like to thank everyone in Japan for inviting us. We’re just disappointed that we couldn’t push for more than 25 minutes.” Da Gama will be hoping that‚ with the addition of his three overage players – Itumeleng Khune‚ Mulomowandau Mathoho and Andile Jali – and some players missing at the Cosafa and in Japan‚ he will have a competitive team in Brazil. Phumlani Ntshangase (injured)‚ Keagan Dolly and Lebogang Mothiba (both excused) are key eligible players who were not with the U23s in Japan. “The most impressive thing about the Japanese team was their discipline. And whatever they do their strengths are that they do it all the time and they do it correctly‚” the U-23 coach said. “From our point of view I think we’re a footballing team. We play with a lot of possession‚ keeping the ball on the ground and moving very quickly.” South Africa kick off their Olympic tournament against hosts Brazil in Brasilia on August 4. Da Gama’s team also have Denmark and Iraq in Group A. Japan meet Nigeria on August 4 in their opening match of Group B‚ where they are also drawn with Sweden and Colombia.

German ex-minister accused of calling photographer ‘filthy Greek’ — RT News Germany’s former federal transport minister, Peter Ramsauer of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria, was accused of insulting the photographer at the time when Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was receiving German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel at the PM’s Maximos Mansion residence in downtown Athens on Thursday. The incident was reported by leftist Avgi newspaper, which alleged that when the photographer accidentally collided with Ramsauer, the latter reportedly launched a verbal attack on the photojournalist, allegedly saying “Fass mich nicht an, Du dreckiger Grieche” (Don’t touch me you filthy Greek) in German, before repeating the phrase in English. A Greek government spokeswoman confirmed to Spiegel Online that the incident had taken place, saying the attack had caused outrage and that the German Embassy had promised to deal with it appropriately. Following the public outcry, Ramsauer took to Facebook to refute the accusations. The German politician claimed that the photographer had “heavily elbowed” him in his ribs, but denied making derogatory comments. “Statements saying I had nudged or abused a photographer in Athens are absolutely untrue. I repudiate this in due form,” he said. “I also explicitly repudiate, that I had called any person a ‘filthy’ or ‘dirty Greek’ or similar.” Peter Ramsauer, who was Germany’s former Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development from October of 2009 to December of 2013, is well known at home as a proponent of purging the German language of words borrowed from English. The confrontation has caused a stir in Greek media, since Ramsauer voted in the Bundestag to deny Greece of rescue packages.

Hundreds of football fans rally to plea for Argentina star Messi’s return — RT Sport The world of football has been in mourning since one of the greatest players to ever step foot on a pitch surprisingly called an end to his international career long before his time. At just 29 years old, Messi was thought to have had a number of good playing years left to give to his country. Hudreds of football fans gathered in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, on Saturday to demonstrate their appreciation for the Barcelona playmaker. Assembling in the rain near the Obelisco de Buenos Aires, supporters reportedly cried out for Messi to remain in the squad, cheering “lead us Messiah.” The rally for his return appears to have begun on social media, where the hashtag – #NoTeVayasLio, or “Don’t go, Lio” – featured alongside images of the “retired” international football player. Last week, following Argentina’s defeat by Chile in the Copa America final, Messi told reporters his international career was over, saying he had “done all I can.” Prior to the announcement, Messi had missed a crucial spot kick as his side lost in a penalty shootout. The shock decision came as Messi, arguably the world’s greatest player, experienced heartbreak in an international final for the fourth time, having also lost in Copa America 2015, World Cup 2014, and again in 2007, when Brazil claimed South America’s top prize. Brazilian legend Pele has joined the clamor for Messi’s return, saying that Argentina’s top goal scorer should reconsider. “He got very upset, but maybe wait a little bit and he’ll forget because this has happened with a lot of good players,” the three time World Cup winner was quoted by Sky Sports as saying. “A lot of good players have missed penalty kicks. The last 15 years, for me, he was one of the best players in the world, and this is more important… I hope he listens to me.”

Blitzboks get top expert input in breakdowns for Rio Games The breakdown has become as important in sevens in as it is fifteens and Gray‚ who spent three seasons with the Springboks under Heyneke Meyer‚ is one of the best in the business in that area of the game. He was widely hailed as one of the successes of the Meyer tenure with the Boks regularly bossing the ball on the deck. Players such as Francois Louw‚ Duane Vermeulen‚ Bismarck du Plessis‚ Coenie Oosthuizen and several others flourished at the breakdown after working with Gray. And Blitzboks coach Neil Powell felt it necessary to bring Gray again for another stint as his team gradually lost their impact at the breakdown as the recent 2015-16 World Sevens Series season wore on. Gray initially worked with the Blitzboks last November and the results showed as they dominated that aspect of the game in the first two tournaments of the year. SA won on home soil in Cape Town in the second round of the series. “Richie has been killing the guys in training‚” Powell said. “They really love working with him but they know when he is here they are in for a hard time and a tough session. “Seeing as the breakdown and rucks are the most important areas in sevens it’s been vital having him here. “He’s spent a lot of time looking at the players’ techniques at a ruck and then coaching them to be far more effective in that area of the game. “There is also a conditioning component within the breakdown work that fits in with our overall conditioning strategy for the Olympics. “Richie is such a specialist in this area and he really helped us. We were excellent at the breakdown in the early part of the season but we fell away a bit towards the end. “Richie’s main aim is for the players to maintain a low body position when entering rucks. He showed us clips from earlier in the year when we were nice and low and then later in the season we were more upright. He has a saying that the ‘low man wins the breakdown’. “When I started as coach my main goal was to improve two areas – the ruck/breakdown and kicks-offs/restarts. We continue to work hard on those crucial aspects.” Gray leaves the team on Saturday and at this stage it’s unclear whether he will return for another stint before the Olympics. “We’re trying to get him back again before the Olympics or even get him down for a few days in Rio before the tournament‚” Powell said. “But nothing is set in stone yet because he has some other commitments as well.” The Blitzboks play a friendly tournament against Namibia‚ Zimbabwe‚ Western Province and an Invitational Squad in Stellenbosch on Friday and Saturday as part of their preparations for Rio. “We needed competitive matches at this stage of our preparation and hopefully this is exactly what we will get‚” Powell said. “You can train as hard and as much as you like‚ but nothing beats the real time of matches. Your decision-making‚ fitness and overall skills comes to the fore in a match and those are some of the elements I am looking for this weekend.”

Sundowns would be a good home for Steven Pienaar, says Mosimane The Sundowns coach Mosimane says Pienaar should have “fun” when he returns to wind down his career in the Premier Soccer League‚ which could make the trophy-successful‚ attractive football environment at Downs a good option for the Everton midfielder and former Bafana Bafana captain as a next career move. Pienaar‚ 34‚ is a free agent and reported to be between minds on pursuing a few more seasons in Europe or returning to South Africa after a glittering career abroad. Mosimane said Downs would certainly offer the midfielder – who played just four Premier League games for Everton in their past season – a home. “We love Pienaar. I don’t know what ‘Schillaci’ has. He’s got options this side‚” Mosimane said. “For him it’s not about the money‚ I don’t think. I think he must have fun in South Africa. “But he’s a good boy. He was my captain in Bafana. We’ve shared good moments. “I knew him when he was 16 years old. I was visiting him and his parents in a flat in Westbury when he was 16. “I watched all his games in the SA Under-17 squad when he was still with the School of Excellence. I used to visit him in hospital when he had an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] at 16. “I bought him all the books to show him that he can go to Europe. Those are the memories we share – and he was my [Bafana] captain.” Pienaar’s agent‚ Rob Moore‚ is reported to have held talks with Orlando Pirates‚ while Kaizer Chiefs have also expressed interest in the midfielder who notched 61 caps for Bafana before retiring internationally in 2013. While “big three” rivals Chiefs and Pirates have been signing furiously in this off-season‚ Downs have made just the one acquisition in Brazilian defender Ricardo dos Santos Nascimento. Mosimane said the club have been scared off by asking prices. He made a thinly veiled reference at the price tag Bidvest Wits have put on playmaker Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ while the coach also said PSL champions Downs are only interested in adding quality to their squad. “You know who we want to sign. You guys [the press] are writing about it. But we can’t have them – they are expensive‚” Mosimane said. “We’ve only made one signing. We are waiting for quality. I don’t want to bring in a player who’s not going to make the starting line-up – what’s the point? “But we can’t afford to pay so much money. In my opinion I don’t think there is a player who is worth more than R10 million in South Africa. “Even my players are not worth that. Even Khama Billiat – R10 million locally? Unless the foreign currency come in – then we must sell them at a high price.” He said Nascimento needs time to find his match fitness. “He’s had three-and-a-half week’s rest. He’s just starting to train. We’ll bring him in in games in the last 20 to 30 minutes.” - TMG Digital

Vera Pauw shares Banyana player's Dutch delight Pauw was singing the praises of goalkeeper Roxanne Barker‚ who has been snapped up by SC Heerenveen Vrouwen from the Netherlands. The mentor of Sasol- sponsored Banyana Banyana is optimistic that more players will follow‚ as there is a lot of talent in this country. Times Media Sport: Good news coming out of the Banyana Banyana camp? Vera Pauw: It is very good news indeed because it’s the first time that a South African player is signed by a team from the Netherlands. So the fact that Heerenveen has chosen a South African player‚ with the rules and regulations that are currently in place‚ is just a tremendous result. It is just fantastic. TMS: Roxanne is very excited about the move‚ especially after leaving her club in Iceland to focus on Olympic preparations‚ and now it is paying off. VP: Indeed‚ and who knows what will follow because the big thing is that‚ playing in Europe‚ the top clubs will see her. And here in South Africa we are still a bit hidden away. The fact that we played in the Netherlands has made this happen because they came to the game and were impressed with what they saw – which went along with the information that I had passed on to them about her. They had called me for more information on her and they knew I would not make up anything‚ but will be honest. TMS: So how did this move come about? VP: To be honest‚ I was involved in a small way. As I said‚ they contacted me asking about information on Roxanne after she had written an email to them saying she was looking for a club – which was good initiative from her. Then they called me‚ and the fact that she played very well against the Netherlands landed her the contract. I only gave out honest views about her play because she has been doing so well for a very long time but at the end it was their decision to sign her. TMS: Just recently you said that Banyana Banyana players deserve contracts because of the way they play‚ and now it has happened – even before the Olympics. VP: It is just fantastic and all credit should go to Heerenveen that they took this big step‚ and this comes at a time when many other countries are starting to take note of our players. But‚ as I said‚ with the rules and regulations in place‚ it is not easy to get a South African player in a club – you have to sort out a few things like work permits and insurance. I think it is coming‚ and you can feel that suddenly other countries are interested in our players. Just recently we received requests from countries wanting to play us but we don’t have any more time to do so‚ and that is a good thing to get those requests. We have already been invited for the annual Cyprus Cup for next year‚ whereas previously it was about “giving a development country a place” or another country has pulled can we fill in‚ doing this a few weeks before the tournament with little time to prepare. This time we received the invitation a year ahead of time because we have shown a certain level of game‚ we have shown a positive level of the game‚ and everybody wants to play us now. And I am not talking about small countries – I mean the big nations. VP: Obviously one thing that inspires very much is when a teammate reaches a goal that we have set for ourselves‚ so I said to them it is possible – who’s next? It is because we have the quality‚ it is not something that is a coincidence‚ it is something that we have worked for. The players have worked so hard for over two year to get to the stage where they deserve contracts. I am absolutely sure that more will follow very soon. TMS: Tell us about Heerenveen. VP: They are a club known for their family-like atmosphere. Even the men’s team has lots of young players from outside the country who live with host families. They always cater for the players’ studies‚ they have language courses for those who don’t speak Dutch. They use tutors who also help the young ones with schoolwork. In that sense it is a very good club. In terms of play‚ the level of Heerenveen in the Dutch Women’s League is a bit at the bottom‚ but they are working their way up – and the first step for them was to get a good goalkeeper. The fact that they have scooped Roxanne with all the goalkeepers available means that when they came to our game she was impressive. TMS: Roxanne signing this contract will help get more experience to Banyana Banyana VP: Oh‚ yes‚ without doubt. But most importantly it is a fantastic experience for her‚ and she deserves it like so many players in Banyana Banyana. She has deliberately chosen that club because it is where she will be under pressure‚ as she will face better opposition‚ she won’t have time to take it easy. For a goalkeeper that’s a very good thing because it means she will improve with every game. She will get the best training every day‚ so all the conditions are set for her to become an even better goalkeeper than she is already. With her experience when she returns to Banyana Banyana for matches it means this team will be even better and stronger. Banyana Banyana will face Olympic and world champions USA on Saturday‚ July 9 at Soldier Field in Chicago‚ Illinois to continue preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The match kicks off at 7pm South African time. Banyana depart for the match on Tuesday.

River Church pastor's 'poorly chosen words reveal deep-seated attitudes of many white people’: Kathrada Foundation That’s a view endorsed by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation‚ written by the University of South Africa’s Professor JNJ “Klippies’ Kritzinger”‚ in a reaction entitled “Response to Pastor André Olivier of Rivers Church‚ Sandton”. Olivier made waves on social media after his sermon over the weekend was seen by many to suggest that black people were lazy. “It is to be appreciated that Pastor Olivier apologised for the statements he made in a sermon on Sunday‚” wrote Kritzinger. “It is important‚ though‚ not simply to forgive him and move on‚ since his words were not only ‘poorly chosen’ (as he says in his Twitter apology)‚ but reveal deep-seated attitudes and approaches that keep on bedevilling relationships between black and white people in this country.” Kritzinger said it Olivier’s contentious statements were made when “he digressed from his prepared text and ‘spoke from his heart’. “This is clear when at the end of the clip he says: ‘Back to the message.’ ” Kritzinger said this “reveals something typical about the life of many white people in South Africa: we have learnt to be ‘politically correct’ most of the time‚ particularly when we are speaking in public or in the presence of black people”. “We do this to ‘avoid trouble’ or to prevent being accused of racism. But sometimes‚ when our guard drops‚ we reveal what we really think and who we really are. And then our untransformed mind-sets emerge into the open. “This usually happens when we are angry or disgusted at a specific incident‚ like Penny Sparrow’s experience on a Durban beach‚ or Vicki Momberg’s tirade after the smash-and-grab incident. It also happens around the braaivleis fire‚ when we let our inhibitions go and say what we really think about black people (and about ourselves).” Kritzinger said “Olivier lowered his guard…and revealed his real feelings and thinking about the history of South Africa and the nature of the relationship between black and white people”. “That is what we need to address; not his unfortunate choice of words.”

Will 'Game of Thrones' prove the sword mightier than the penis It's not so much about what they've got as what they haven't. Aside from newly appointed Hand of the Queen Tyrion Lannister (who himself has the moniker of "half man"), none of them has a penis. Her council comprises two eunuchs and a woman. The noble houses that have joined her are represented by women and by Theon Greyjoy, who is also a eunuch. What's more, the bulk of Daenerys's army is made up of the castrated super-soldiers known as The Unsullied. They've got ships, military expertise, administrative nouse and a solid claim to the throne. They've got all the necessary tools - just not that one. And together this phallic-free force plan to take over Westeros, a land which is practically phallus-shaped. There's an important subtext at play, however, when it comes to the male contingent of Daenerys's supporters. The penis-less likes of Varys, Greyworm and Theon have been told they are lesser beings because they are lacking downstairs, but the Dragon Queen is restoring their sense of worth. George RR Martin has always subverted fairy-tale tropes. He's insisted that it's dishonest not to have dashing princes (like Robb Stark) die as easily as minor characters and villains. In an ordinary fantasy saga, we would have expected the Starks, honourable Ned included, to live happily ever after. Now, we're seeing a team of females and castrated men pool their resources against scheming Queen Cersei, another woman. The War of the Five Kings is over and done with, and now it's the ladies' and eunuchs' turn to prove they can tear things up. The disenfranchised of Westeros are coming to prove that you don't need a penis to rule a kingdom.

It's a land of plenty, so why don't we grow something? With more and more people losing their jobs and the economy declining, the number of those struggling to find their next meal is growing every day. Almost one in five households across the country reported they had run out of money to buy food in those previous 12 months. Isabelle Schmidt, the agency's executive manager for social statistics, said levels of poverty had declined nationally, but poverty had increased in Limpopo province in the past five years. Although the government has put in place several programmes to help communities sustain themselves, more still needs to be done. Schools with land that is not being used could turn it into food gardens to help struggling families. In fact, such initiatives would teach our youth important crop-growing skills. As a society we need to encourage one an other to use available space, even in our homes, to cultivate vegetable gardens. If we wait for an improving economy to absorb all of us into the job market we are likely to turn into an apathetic, hungry nation reliant on grants and donations. South Africa has the land and the means to feed all its people. Experts tell us that about a third of the world's food goes to waste, and tons of food is thrown away here, too. This situation can be changed. Good management and co-ordination can help alleviate poverty and feed communities. The shocking poverty stats can be reversed if we encourage people to grow their own food. This is a message that is missing from the manifestos of all the political parties as they campaign for our votes. Let's roll up our sleeves and start digging.

'Boxit' Boris boggles Brexit-battered Brits A string of MPs backing him to take over from David Cameron had expected Johnson to confirm his candidacy at a London press conference, but at the end of an 11-minute speech trumpeting his achievements as London mayor and outlining his vision for the UK, Johnson dropped his bombshell - he would not stand. Conservative MP Nigel Evans told the BBC: "It makes House of Cards look like Teletubbies. " Johnson entered to loud applause from supporters and at first showed no sign he would step back from the chance of a job he has reportedly craved for most of his life. He trumpeted his role in making London Europe's most dynamic city and could not resist a dig at the EU. The only indication that he might not stand came when he seemed to paraphrase a line from Shakespeare' s Julius Caesar by saying he would not "fight against the tide of history". After Johnson outlined his vision of the UK's relationship with the EU after its departure - access to the single market and a points-based immigration system - the crowd was poised for an announcement. It came - but it was not the one they were expecting. "I must tell you my friends, you who have waited patiently for the punch-line of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me," he said. Some MPs believed Johnson campaigned for Brexit only to have a shot at the top job. Said one Conservative MP: " At least it's not just the Labour Party [that is] capable of total shambles. " He was referring to Jeremy Corbyn's refusal to resign as opposition leader despite losing the support of most of his legislators.

13 hostages freed from Dhaka cafe after overnight attack saw 20 victims killed — RT News "The operation is over and the situation is under control," army spokesman Colonel Rashidul Hasan told Reuters. At around 8 am, following a 13-hour siege and failed negotiations with the terrorists, over 100 heavily armed Bangladeshi forces launched an operation to free the people being held inside the upscale cafe in Dhaka’s diplomatic district. It has been reported that Italian, Japanese and Indian nationals were among the hostages. Italy’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Mario Palma, confirmed the reports, saying that seven Italians were inside the cafe. “Intense” gunfire and two massive blasts were heard from the Dhaka restaurant, according to police, though it is unclear what caused the explosions. According to a Japanese government spokesman, some 12 people have been rescued, but he did not specify whether they were foreigners. By Saturday morning, it was still unclear how many people are still in the cafe, or what their condition is. Shortly after reports about the hostage-taking started to surface, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. One of the attackers was armed with a sword, and the others carried guns, an employee of a nearby cafe told RT. He estimated the number of hostages as at least 30. A kitchen worker who managed to escape the building said the attackers chanted “Allahu Akbar.” “They blew up several crude bombs, causing wide-scale panic among everyone. I managed to flee during this confusion,” he said, according to The Daily Star, a Bangladeshi English-language newspaper. Later, ISIS posted graphic photos claiming that those were pictures of dead foreigners killed in the assault on the cafe. Islamic State claimed it killed 24 people. However, Bangladeshi police stated earlier that only two police officers had been killed and at least 20 people wounded. Information coming out from the area remains limited, as all TV networks across Bangladesh have stopped live coverage at the request of the police.

Austrian town bans women in ‘burqinis’ from swimming in public pool — RT News “In respect to the bathing rules, we are completely pleased with the adopted variant. From how the text [of the guidelines] has been now formulated, it can be ensured, that no person wearing a burqini can enter the pool,” said Peter Terzer, a FP member and town councilor, who triggered the controversial ban, according to the local NÖN.at. Justifying the new bathing guidelines’ wording, he said the ban was based on sanitation grounds, so the water in the pool would be in accordance with hygiene requirements. The ban was backed by Hainfeld’s mayor, Albert Pitterle, who said the decision should not be considered as extraordinary as it as in line with the existing bathing rules. “Nothing in particular has prompted the ban, however, the bathing rules have been in place for decades already,” he told Krone.at. daily. Last month, a similar ban was introduced by the public pool in the German city of Neutraubling, following complaints by a fellow woman visitor. The woman opted for a full-body swimsuit during a women-only day in the pool. The choice of the attire did not go well with the town’s mayor, Heinz Kiechle, who said it “contradicts the basic idea of integration and mutual recognition which is always being discussed in many towns.” READ MORE: Refugees banned from Austrian pool after ‘foreigner’ sexually assaults teenage girl Apart from outlawing full-length swimming attire, Terzer was advocating tighter security at the pool, citing the reports of women allegedly being sexually assaulted by migrants in Austrian swimming pools, which had already prompted some leisure facilities to ban the male refugees altogether. In the most recent case, authorities of the Austrian town of Mistelbach, also in Lower Austria, had issued a temporary ban on all refugees following the sexual harassment of the 13-year old teenage girl by a young “dark- skinned” man, supposedly an asylum-seeker from nearby shelter facilities. The local officials had posted a sign in English reading “today no entry for refugees” in the wake of the incident. READ MORE: Austrian swimming pool off-limits to ‘unaccompanied refugees’ amid child rape outrage “My main concern continues to be the safety of the female bathers” , Terzer told NÖN.at, adding that it will be “fundamentally wrong” to turn a blind eye on the facts out of “political correctness,” referring to the “numerous incidents” in swimming pools across the country. However, the argument was lost on the mayor, who insisted the additional security measures would be excessive as the small size of the pool let it to be supervised by one person. “Our lifeguard ensures security and is instructed to report every incident,” he added. The sexually-related offenses allegedly committed by refugees in the EU, fleeing war in persecution in Middle East and North Africa, have been making headlines all over Europe since last year as the refugee crisis intensified with over a million of refugees pouring into Europe last year. In March, the Austrian Interior Ministry reported a spike in sex attacks, saying they have reached peak numbers not observed for many years before with 12 such crimes on average being registered every day. However, the focus on refugees` complicity in the crimes might have offered a distortive prospective on the issue. According to the data, only 25 out of 343 sex-related offences at that time were linked to asylum seekers with 175 to Austrian nationals.

France’s new terrorist database goes live in effort to prevent future attacks — RT News The database will be under the supervision of a judge and the Justice Ministry, local media reported. That means that all the entries will have to be approved first. In case of dismissals and acquittals the names of the individuals will be erased. The database will be accessible to police, intelligence and state officials. The idea was first announced in January 2015 following the terrorist attacks in Paris and passed last July. It came into effect Friday. The proposal stemmed from the difficulty local authorities had in locating people convicted of terrorism in the past, according to French government. The database will resemble the already existing national databases for criminal sex offenders and the criminal records. France will now be able to register names and their terrorist offenses for up to 20 years. However, information about minors will be stored only for 10 years. The database comes after Paris year of terror, as waves of deadly attacks have held France in a constant state of emergency and stress. Paris and the world was first shocked when just before Christmas on December 20, 2014, in the largest suburb of the city of Tours, in Central France, an attacker of Burundian origin, shouted “Allahu Akbar” [God is great] before attacking officers at a police station with a knife. READ MORE: Monstrous wave of Paris attacks underlines France’s year of terror Attacks continued sporadically. And then in early January 2015 a series of five new terrorist attacks, which took place in and around Paris, sent the French capital into panic. The four attacks killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens more, before three of the assailants were killed by special forces. The fourth terrorist remains at large. Another set of terror attacks rocked the French capital on November 13, 2015, killing over 130 people and injuring hundreds of others. Three suicide bombers carried out an assault near the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, which was followed by suicide bombings and mass shootings at cafés and restaurants. Of the 130 victims, at least 89 were killed in the Bataclan theatre, where the jihadists took hostages before engaging in a standoff with police officers. Seven of the terrorists died at the scene. Four days after the attacks, the alleged mastermind and sponsor, Abaaoud, was killed during an anti- terrorist operation in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. France also reportedly had serious failings locating known terror suspects. Thus, Salah Abdeslam, best friend of the Paris attack “mastermind” and brother of one of the suicide bombers, was stopped, and let go, three times after assisting the jihadists. Abdeslam was able to calmly flee the scene of the Paris massacre by asking two friends from a Brussels suburb to pick him up because his car had “broken down,” according to media reports. Months after November 13 attacks, local media revealed that French intelligence was alerted about possible terrorist attacks in France and Belgium on June 24, 2015, nearly five months prior to the Paris assaults. 2016-07-04 00:01 www.rt.com

Suicide rates by job highest in farming, fishing and forestry — CDC — RT America There were 40,000 suicides in 2012, according to the CDC’s Violent Death Reporting System, and out of that data, CDC researchers analyzed 12,312 suicides in 17 states, organizing them by occupational group to see the frequency of self-inflicted deaths in those fields. “Analysis… indicated that workers in the farming, fishing and forestry occupational group had the highest rate of suicide (84.5 per 100,000), followed by workers in construction and extraction (53.3), and installation, maintenance and repair (47.9),” said the CDC report released Friday. Among the dataset, 9,509, or 77.2 percent, were male, and 2,801, or 22.8 percent, were female. The highest proportion of suicides occurred among persons aged 45 to 54 years, while the lowest was among working persons aged 16 to 24 years. The CDC said factors contributing to suicide might be work-home imbalance, socioeconomic inequities – lower incomes, lower education level and lack of access to health care. The study suggested that high rates of suicide among farmers could be attributed to “chronic exposure to pesticides [which] might affect the neurologic system and contribute to depressive symptoms.” The isolation of farmers might be another factor as well, as may be the potential for financial loss, barriers or unwillingness to seek mental health services and access to lethal means. Other findings were that men in those occupations – fishing, farming, forestry – also accounted for the highest rate of suicide at 90.5 per 100,000, whereas the highest rate among females was 14.1 per 100,000 in the protective service occupational group, which includes law enforcement and firefighters. The CDC said in 2012, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death among persons aged 16 years and older in the US. The rates of suicide among persons 16 years and older increased 21.1 percent from 13.3 percent per 100,000 people to 16.1 percent between 2000 to 2012. The lowest rates of suicide were found in education, training and library occupational groups. Prior studies of suicide among professions only examined one occupation at a time, such as police suicides, or were studied from a specific state. This study had 17 states and included male and females. Military occupations were not included in the analysis, because the CDC was not able to determine whether they were on active duty or retired or what occupation they held in the military. The CDC recommended prevention strategies include enhancing social support, community connectedness, access to preventative services and reduction of stigma and barriers over mental illness, in order to help those seeking encouragement.

German job site reports spike in British visitors after Brexit vote — RT News "Only in the past 10 days, the increase is in the hundreds of thousands of more UK visitors," the website’s founder Hessam Lavi said, speaking to the Local. This job search company called Jobspotting offers jobs across 10 countries, including Germany, the UK, Austria, Spain, Ireland as well as in non-European states such as South Africa or Argentina. The very next morning after Brexit vote, the website noted a boom in traffic from the UK. “Friday morning we woke and basically all of our servers were on fire,” Lavi recalls, adding that despite some of the users might have been lured by the articles outlining implications of the Brexit on the European workforce, a considerable amount of UK-based visitors were actually seeking job opportunities overseas. Although Lavi could not provide the statistics of how many of those coming to the site from Britain were actually British nationals and what was the share of foreign workers fearing restrictions on alien employees, the data indicated 60 percent of users were writing in British English, another 25 in US English, with all the remaining languages comprising about 2 percent of all searches. READ MORE:Brexit vote was a tie, Britain will never leave EU - academic "The mood is one of disbelief and shock, people are in limbo – they are disappointed and are wondering what is going to happen in the coming months," said Carrie King, editor of Journal by Jobspotting to the BBC, explaining the general sentiment held by the UK manpower in the times of economic and political uncertainty which gripped the country. The job seekers appeared to be mostly young professionals aged 25 to 34. They constituted 44 percent of the UK traffic. The vast share of users showed specific interest to the high-skilled jobs in Berlin, in particular in the IT sphere. Half of the applicants hail from London, which can indicate the UK’s capital can experience a kind of brain drain with its borders closed to the best talents all over Europe. “Without this freedom of movement, London is going to suffer,” Lavi warned, stressing that “the framework of the EU and the stability that London will lack means it can easily attract talent from across the EU given the freedom of movement.” While the country has plunged into political turmoil following the narrow victory by the Leave camp, with it gaining 51.89 percent versus 48.11 percent by Remain, the latest poll by the Ispos Mori for BBC Newsnight carried out on 29-30 June has revealed 5 percent of the 1,077 adults interviewed that voted for Brexit to happen would now change their stance compared to 2 percent of the Remain voters. The attitude to the EU citizens eyeing a job in the UK is divisive within British society, with the country being largely split along the voting lines. While 67 percent of Remain voters do not oppose the EU citizens staying and working in the UK if the country’s access to the European single market stays in place. On the contrary, 66 percent of Leave voters advocate stripping the EU citizens of freedom of movement even if it means losing the advantages of the single market.

GovNet links 118 gov’t offices in Metro Manila THE DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) has launched GovNet, which links government offices through a fiber optic network that allows faster internet speed and better connectivity. So far, 118 government agencies in Metro Manila and 12 in Cebu are linked to GovNet, which is part of the Integrated Government Philippines project, said Dennis Villorente, ICTO deputy executive director, at the launch during the National ICT Summit in Quezon City on Tuesday. The agency hopes to expand to seven more regions in the Philippines “within the year,” Villorente said. These include Iloilo City, Legazpi City in Albay province, City of San Fernando in Pampanga province, Palo in Leyte province, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province, Butuan City and Baguio City—where 317 government offices will be interconnected. The fiber optic network is expected to serve 160 government agencies, which will also be able to provide free Wi-Fi to the public as part of the Free Public Wi-Fi project of the DOST-ICTO. The project makes use of the technology that uses glass or silicon fiber to transmit and receive messages in the form of light instead of electricity, according to the ICTO, which will be abolished and transferred to the newly created Department of Information and Communications Technology.

Duterte to issue FOI executive order soon THE NEW occupant of Malacañang wants to accomplish in his first few days in office something his predecessor failed to deliver in six years. President Duterte will sign within the next two weeks an executive order allowing freedom of information (FOI), giving the public an opportunity to access government records, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said on Sunday. The order, however, covers only offices under the executive branch of the government since it is just a presidential memorandum, Andanar said. Interviewed over state-owned dzRB radio, Andanar said the President’s executive order was consistent with his campaign promise that his administration would be transparent and open to the public. “This is a commitment of the President to us,” Andanar said. “We are rushing the draft of the executive order. We will announce (its signing) within this week or next week,” he added. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III vowed to enact a freedom of information bill during his campaign for Malacañang in 2010, a promise he failed to keep despite having full control of Congress throughout his six-year term. Many of his party mates in the once-dominant Liberal Party and his political allies also opposed the idea of providing the press and the public full access to documents pertaining to government projects and related matters. Aquino’s failure to pass the FOI bill was among the black marks on his administration, which he anchored on transparency. Andanar said President Duterte would also approve the creation of a “presidential task force against media killings” to deal with unabated violence against journalists. The formation of the special task force comes weeks after Mr. Duterte’s controversial remarks that seemed to justify the murders of journalists in the Philippines. Mr. Duterte’s statement that corrupt journalists are legitimate targets of assassination drew global criticism, but instead of apologizing, he banned the press from his events. Task force on media killings The creation of a task force on media killings also comes a few days after a radio commentator, known for his stinging tirades against illegal drugs and gambling, barely survived an assassination attempt in Surigao City. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said Saturnino “Jan” Estanio of Radio Mindanao Network-dxRS and his 12-year-old son were wounded in the June 30 attack. Jocelyn Ferol, RMN-dxRS program director, said Estanio claimed that personal grudge might have been behind the attack, but his commentaries on illegal drugs and gambling also might have invited it. Andanar said he and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea were already working on a draft of the proposed executive order, which he himself was pushing as chief of the Presidential Communications Office. A broadcast journalist before he was appointed by the President last month, Andanar said he reminded Mr. Duterte about his “promise to the media and the people” during the change of command ceremony at the Philippine National Police held at Camp Crame last week. “We are just fine-tuning the executive order. Maybe next week we can already announce [the creation of the task force],” Andanar said. “This is one of the things we’re doing to make our colleagues in the media at ease and stop the extrajudicial killings of members of the media,” he added. 61 Bato should be sole PNP boss–Ping THE NEW Philippine National Police chief should not just talk tough, he should also make sure he is really the boss and everyone in the organization respects his authority, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said on Sunday. “There should only be one boss in the PNP,” Lacson said he told Director General Ronald “Bato” de la Rosa, who, on taking office on Friday, gave high-ranking police officials coddling drug lords two days to “surrender or die.” Speaking on radio, Lacson said he spoke to De la Rosa recently. He said he knew him well, as De la Rosa served in the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force that he headed during the administration of President Joseph Estrada. De la Rosa served as the task force commander in Mindanao, Lacson said. He described the barrel-chested, bald-headed De la Rosa as “rustic, simple and silent,” but a “doer.” Lacson, who also served as PNP chief under Estrada, said he also advised De la Rosa, a former police chief of Davao City whom President Duterte promoted over the heads of several higher-ranking officials in the PNP, not to be intimidated by his upperclassmen and to show his leadership. “Knowing him, I don’t think he will be intimidated by his upperclassmen,” Lacson said. The boss The senator said he also advised De la Rosa to show that he is the boss in the PNP and there’s no one else, especially when politicians meddle in the appointment of police chiefs in their hometowns or provinces. Such interventions happened during the administrations of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino III, Lacson said, and that PNP chiefs tend to get approval from Malacañang first before appointing local police commanders. Lacson said he advised De la Rosa to explain to Mr. Duterte the importance of his authority as PNP chief so that he could discipline his men and implement his policies. Short of that, lower-ranking police officials will not respect De la Rosa because they owe their appointment to other people and not to the PNP chief, Lacson said. He also disclosed that De la Rosa had told him that many congressmen had written to him, recommending the appointment of police officials they knew to their districts. The recommendations had gone through Mr. Duterte and the President passed them to De la Rosa for action, Lacson said. ‘Internal cleansing’ Lacson said he also underscored the importance of “internal cleansing” in the PNP to De la Rosa. He said he was shocked when De la Rosa told him that before, some PNP officials whispered about their take from illegal gambling, but now the whispering was about the size of their take from illegal drugs. His advice, he said, was for De la Rosa to press the campaign against drugs, because any slack in the drive could be exploited by the drug lords to put a stop to the police offensive. Asked about Mr. Duterte’s combative talk against drug lords that could embolden police to take extrajudicial measures, Lacson said he believed it was only “sound bite” and spoken “figuratively.” Even if Mr. Duterte promised to protect policemen, those policemen know they could go to jail if they break the law, Lacson said. He said he supported Mr. Duterte’s decision to involve the military in the fight against crime because he did it when he was the PNP chief. Lacson said he paired police with Marines and deployed them to shopping malls in Metro Manila, resulting in a 70-percent drop in crime incidence in the National Capital Region. Two governments He said, however, that he did not agree with Mr. Duterte’s call to the communist New People’s Army to help in killing criminals, as this would be a slap to the face of the government and the judiciary. “There will be anarchy and a very chaotic situation,” Lacson said, pointing out that the insurgents’ involvement would result in the country having two governments. “I am not for the use of outside law enforcers to enforce the law,” he said.

Who’s for death? Solons not telling SENATORS are playing their cards close to their chest with regard to their stand on the reimposition of the death penalty, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said on Sunday. Lacson said he expected a heavy debate when the issue was brought up for discussion on the floor. Lacson, along with Sen. Vicente Sotto III, had filed a separate bill on the revival of the death penalty law, which covered heinous crimes and called for the penalty of lethal injection for those convicted of these crimes. The law was repealed in 2006. But Lacson said the law was just “suspended” and their bill called for its reinstatement. Lacson, who is part of the supermajority that will elect Aquilino Pimentel III as Senate President when the new Congress opens on July 25, is expected to be nominated chair of the committee on public order and drugs that would oversee hearings on the death penalty bills. Interviewed on radio, Lacson said he anticipated a lengthy discussion of the issue and intended to “maximize the participation” of all sectors for and against the death penalty. Asked whether the Senate would be able to approve the bill within three to four months as Pimentel had earlier projected, Lacson said that time frame might not suffice. He said public hearings could be held to get input from all sectors but it would be a different matter when the issue is discussed on the Senate floor. Asked whether he believed he could get the necessary votes to approve the death penalty bill, he said the senators were not disclosing their positions on the issue, just as they were silent about whether they were for the shift to a federal form of government. Aside from pushing for the reimposition of the death penalty, Duterte also wants his administration to seriously consider amendments to the Constitution to allow a federal form of government. Saying he was aware Sen. Leila de Lima was against the death penalty, Lacson said he did not think she would sit on the measures or even derail them. De Lima is likely to be nominated chair of the justice committee, the secondary committee expected to hear the death penalty bills. Still, Lacson said, there could be remedies in the Senate rules they could resort to in order to ensure the action on the bills would not be delayed. De Lima bill Meanwhile, De Lima said she would file a bill that would ensure the provision of justice for victims, especially of heinous crimes, without resorting to capital punishment. De Lima, who served as justice secretary in the Benigno S. Aquino III administration, has been very vocal about her opposition to the return of the death penalty. She said in text messages she would come up with an alternative bill and that she was in the process of “fine-tuning” it. She said she was pushing for a bill that “ensures justice, especially to victims of heinous crimes, without resort to the extreme capital punishment which is antipoor, un-Christian and probably in contravention of the restorative philosophy under our correctional system.” Sen. Risa Hontiveros shared the same sentiment, being part of the movement for restorative justice that abolished the death penalty in 2006.

Remaining LPs tell new ruling party: You need us for ‘credibility’ CONGRESSMEN belonging to the Liberal Party (LP) on Sunday emphasized the need for a “credible minority” and not “a rubber stamp Congress,” amid reports the new ruling party, Partido Demokratikong Pilipino- Lakas ng Bayan (PDP- Laban), intended to decimate its ranks. In a text message to the Inquirer, Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice considered the decimation of their ranks mere “speculation.” “But I say that a credible minority would really serve best not just the country but even the President’s administration as it will provide humanitarian and alternative insights,” Erice said. In a statement, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said: “More than the ascendancy of a supermajority in the House of Representatives, what is seriously alarming is a possible emergence of a co-opted minority, a ‘company union,’ established and supported by the majority.” He urged colleagues “not to allow themselves to be pawns in a sinister plot to create a rubber stamp Congress.” “I earnestly urge the remaining Liberal Party representatives to forge a minority coalition with similarly minded party-list representatives and members of other parties, and become the reasonable, credible and vigilant counterpoise to the new administration,” Lagman said. He stressed the need for “checks and balances” in the government, which should not be “sacrificed at the unholy altar of partisanship and expediency.” The Inquirer reported on Sunday that PDP-Laban wanted the LP trimmed down to no more than 20 members in the House. 64 Pay P24-B debt, COA tells MIAA THE COMMISSION on Audit has reprimanded the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) for delaying the payment of $531 million (P24.5 billion) in just compensation plus interest to the builder of Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 despite a final Supreme Court ruling in April. The COA warned the MIAA the interest due would continue to increase while it delayed paying Philippine International Air Terminals Co. (Piatco). Last April, the Supreme Court unanimously affirmed its September 2015 decision ordering the government to pay Piatco $531 million for its expropriation of Naia Terminal 3, rejecting the solicitor general’s appeal to lower the compensation. The high court also ordered the government to pay interest of about $16 million (P720 million) annually until full payment was made. Total interest from September 2006 up to April 2016 has reached $263.7 million (P12.15 billion). “(W)e recommended that MIAA determine and recognize in its books the impact of the Supreme Court ruling… particularly on the probable outflow of resources to settle this obligation,” the COA said in its 2015 audit report on the airport operator. The MIAA which was headed by former President Benigno S. Aquino III’s cousin, retired Air Force Gen. Angel Honrado, had reasoned that the airport authority was never involved in discussions on the case, “thus the MIAA cannot resolve on its own the issue on whether the national government or the Authority should pay Piatco.” Honrado suggested that payments should come from the national government, adding that the national government would have full ownership over Terminal 3 upon payment of full compensation.” He further argued that the MIAA was waiting for word whether or not the Supreme Court would allow a second appeal from the solicitor general. But the COA reminded the MIAA that as operator of Terminal 3, it had initially recognized in its books the proffered value of the airport terminal and the escrow deposit for payment, as well as related arbitration expenses and improvements done on the facility. “Thus the asset and the probable outflow of resources to settle the obligation would eventually be recognized in MIAA’s books of account. “There is already a strong degree of certainty as to the ultimate conclusion of the matter,” the audit body added.

In last act, Luistro warns teachers, pupils about coming rains THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) has reminded schools nationwide to prepare for the effects of the southwest monsoon, known as “habagat,” which annually brings heavy to torrential rain that cause flooding. In a June 29 memorandum signed by then Secretary Armin Luistro, who stepped down the next day, all DepEd officials and heads of public and private primary and secondary schools were instructed to ensure that all personnel and learners would be ready for the rainy season. The instruction was to make sure measures were in place for the safety of all school personnel, students, facilities, learning materials and vital school records from any hazard “to enable learners’ continued access to education.” The DepEd also encouraged the regular conduct of school disaster response drills or simulations, the preparation of the school contingency plan as well as the posting of emergency hotline numbers in the classrooms and administrative offices. It said that all school personnel and students should be educated on weather disturbances as well as their possible effects and the measures that should be undertaken using materials from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration website. “All schools are encouraged to involve the students, their families and communities in preparing for disasters for this is an effective method of raising their awareness and action about risk education,” it said.

Happy for Leni: From PH to China NAGA CITY—From the Philippines to China, there was celebration in the air. Bursting with pride for a fellow Bicolano, about 5,000 supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo celebrated her inauguration in her home city on Saturday night. The event started with a 10- minute fireworks display at Plaza Rizal. In her address, Robredo urged the crowd to unite and support the Duterte administration. “The time of fighting has ended. Now is the time to support the present administration and leave behind the things that divided us,” she said. On the same day, a celebration was held in China by residents of Jinjiang in Fujian province, Robredo’s office said on Sunday. The residents marched in honor of the Vice President, a “tradition in China reserved for someone who achieves something distinguishable,” the OVP said. The ancestors of the Vice President’s late husband, Jesse Robredo, hailed from Jinjiang. The banners in China read: “Jinjiang, Fujian province congratulates our kababayan, Atty. Leni Lim, Vice President of the Philippines!” Lim is the Chinese last name of Jesse Robredo. Leni Robredo won under the Liberal Party ticket by a margin of some 260,000 votes against her closest rival, Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The senator has filed an election protest to contest Robredo’s win, citing alleged cheating and other irregularities during the May 9 elections. Robredo said her election as vice president was an opportunity that must not be wasted and must be used to bring needed attention to the Bicol region. The victory celebration and thanksgiving party in her city featured performances from university marching bands, cheering squads and singing groups. The city government closed two blocks of the central business district from dusk to late evening on Saturday. While no food or drink was offered to the crowd, the atmosphere remained festive. Local artists and a chorale sang original compositions by Tonton Hernandez, including “Tunay na Pagbabago,” which the composer wrote in 2007 for Jesse, the longest-serving mayor of this city. In the 2010 presidential election, “Tunay na Pagbabago” was used during the campaign of then Sen. Benigno S. Aquino III, through Jesse Robredo, who inspired the song. Leni Robredo arrived at 7:30 p.m. and greeted the crowd at Plaza Quezon, where the outline of her face was projected on an LED screen. Her daughters Aika, Tricia and Jillian joined her on stage as the song was being sung by the 100 Voices Choral Group. Robredo also attended the “One Percent to Vice President Dinner” hosted by couple Carlo and Nica Buenaflor to cap the victory celebration. With a report from Nikko Dizon

Dhoni and Kohli sit with Kumble, Dravid to chalk roadmap Bengaluru : India's Test captain Virat Kohli along with his limited overs counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni today had a lengthy meeting with chief coach Anil Kumble and 'A' team coach Rahul Dravid to chalk out a roadmap for Indian cricket for the coming days. The meeting was also attended by chief national selector Sandeep Patil, GM (Cricket Operations) MV Sridhar, NCA batting coach WV Raman and spin bowling coach Narendra Hirwani along with physio Andrew Leipus. It was learnt that the emphasis will be more on building a cohesion between the 'A' teams and the senior teams. Limited overs captain Dhoni also has given his inpuuts about what his assessment is about the bench-strength of the team as he led a side comprising mostly A team players. The focus will be on seamless transition from first-class to 'A' level and then to the senior teams. According to reliable sources, there were discussions on creating a pool of fast bowlers who could be rotated keeping in mind a long and arduous season ahead. Leipus came into the picture as his role and input will be vital in injury management of the fast bowlers. There has been a dearth of quality spinners with no competition for Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravi Jadeja and Amit Mishra. While Jayant Yadav, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Shahbaz Nadeem are there in the mix, a lot will depend on the feedback that A team coach Dravid gives. With the 'A' team travelling to Australia in August, it will be an important tour for the team management and especially Test captain Kohli and coach Kumble to identify who can be likely replacements for first team players in case there is injury or loss of form. For spin coach Hirwani, it will be his duty to ensure that the spinners who are coming for NCA camps have clean action before they are taklen under Dravid's aegis at the U-19 national team level. Raman, the NCA batting coach, will need to co-ordinate more with Dravid, who is also the national U- 19 coach. The significant meeting took place after the Indian team had a match simulation session where all the members wore customary whites in match- like situation.

CPL 2016: Colin Munro ton in vain Guyana beat Trinbago Knight Riders Kiwi Colin Munro became the first overseas player to make a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) century as he played a remarkable lone hand that helped the Trinbago Knight Riders to reach a competitive score against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, but not a winning one. Despite the New Zealander’s heroics the Knight Riders finished on the losing side as Australian Chris Lynn saw the Guyana franchise home as unlike in the Trinbago innings there were contributions by all the Amazon Warriors’ batsmen. As well as it being the first ton by a non-West Indian it was also Munro’s highest score in T20 cricket, but the issue was no other Knight Rider could find a way to score freely. The level to which Munro dominated the Knight Riders innings was just remarkable, he struck 13 boundaries including six sixes, the rest of team found the ropes just three times. When Munro came to the crease the circumstances could not have been more trying. Fellow New Zealander and Knight Riders’ marquee player Brendon McCullum had gone to the very first ball of the innings. A length delivery from Sohail Tanvir swung away from McCullum very slightly and it caught a thin edge through to the keeper. So Munro walked out to bat to face the second ball of the innings with no runs on the board. This did not seem to put Munro under any real pressure as he plundered 16 runs from Paul Wintz’s first over, the second of the match. While every other Trinbago batsman struggled to time the ball on a Queen’s Park Oval surface that was a touch two-paced and was offering turn for the spinners. The next highest score of the innings was 18 by , with only and Kevon Cooper also making it into double figures. There was something of a slowdown as Munro moved toward his hundred - the Knight Riders managed just three boundaries in the last five overs of their innings. They finished on 162 for 5 and they had Munro to thank for it. He made 100 runs from 65 balls, the rest of the team managed just 53 runs from the bat from 56 balls. The Amazon Warriors got off to a flier in their chase of 163 to win, with Dwayne Smith looking to carry on from the 62 he made against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in his last match. He had made it to 26 when a superb doosra pinned him lbw. When fellow opener Martin Guptill departed in the 10th over, bowled by a ball that went on with the arm, there was huge pressure on Chris Lynn. In the past Lynn has struggled on turning pitches against high class spin, but here he put those struggles behind him. He made 77 from 43 balls and struck an incredible eight Hero Maximums as he helped Guyana to victory, well supported by Jason Mohammed who finished on 33. This defeat means the Knight Riders have just one win from their first three home fixtures which will be a disappointment for a side that has made the Queen’s Park Oval a fortress in the past. TKR will face an in-form Jamaica Tallawahs in their final home match of on Monday night.

72 CPL 2016: Chris Gayle and Andre Russell inspire Jamaica Tallawahs to victory over Patriots A half century from captain Chris Gayle and a quick fire 34 from Andre Russell set up a win for the Jamaica Tallawahs against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Saturday afternoon. Another fine bowling display for the Patriots’ left arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi was not enough for the home team who lost regularly throughout their chase. While Gayle was cementing his place as the leading run scorer of all time, the rest of the Tallawahs’ top order struggled. Chadwick Walton fell in the very first over, lbw to Krishmar Santokie. Rovman Powell and Shakib al Hasan departed for single figures. Kumar Sangakkara was the only other batsman that found any sort of fluidity in the first half of the innings and he was looking dangerous before a mix up with Gayle saw him run out for 26 (21). Unfortunately for the Tallawahs no sooner had Gayle got to fifty he got out, skewing a ball from Thisara Perera to third man for 51. That meant that the responsibility for guiding the Jamaican side to a competitive total fell to vice captain Andre Russell. The powerful all-rounder did not disappoint as he blasted his way to 34 from 20 balls in an innings that included three maximums. The Tallawahs’ total of 153 for 7 looked light and it would take a good bowling display from them to defend it against a Patriots side that bats deep down the order. They delivered just that as all the bowlers shared the wickets around. Kesrick Williams’ first in the CPL saw depart in the second over of the Patriots chase and there were regular wickets throughout that kept pegging back the home side. Faf Du Plessis was doing a decent job at holding the innings together and while he was there the Patriots would have felt confident. But just as he got going he found a leading edge off a delivery from Jon-Russ Jaggesar and the bowler caught a looping return catch. The Patriots just couldn’t get going no matter how hard they tried and in the end that half century from Gayle proved to be a match winning contribution. The last remaining hope for the Patriots was the big-hitting Carlos Brathwaite but Dale Steyn accounted for him in his final over as he picked up figures of 1 for 21 on his CPL debut. A late order cameo from Devon Thomas saw him hit three consecutive Hero Maximums in the final over to make the result seem closer than it was, but those regular wickets meant the Patriots the chase for victory stuttered and never really started. The Tallawahs will be delighted to have got off to a winning start but for the Patriots this loss means they have lost two home games at the start of their campaign. They have two matches at Warner Park to try and rescue the St Kitts leg of their tournament and they will be hoping for victory when they take on the St Lucia Zouks on Sunday.

Hebron hotbed The sheer barbarism of the murders has left the nation reeling. On Thursday morning, Hallel Yaffa Ariel, 13, was stabbed to death in her bedroom in Kiryat Arba. The killer, Muhammad Tarayrah, was motivated by a nihilistic strain of Islam. Before he set out to murder, he made his views clear: he posted on Facebook expressing his wish to die in the name of his hateful creed. He got his wish. In the process he robbed an innocent young girl of the opportunity to live her life. The terrorist’s mother told a Hebron news channel that her son was “a hero” who made her “proud” since he died “defending Jerusalem and the Aksa Mosque,” according Palestinian Media Watch. Then on Friday, more adherents to a barbaric Islamist ideology opened fire on Rabbi Michael “Miki” Mark, 48, of Otniel while he was driving just 15 kilometers from the Ariel family’s home. Mark was shot dead in front of two of his 10 children in the drive-by attack. His wife, Chava, 40, was seriously wounded, their 13-year-old daughter Tehila was moderately-to-seriously wounded and their 15-yearold son Pedaya was lightly wounded. In response to the escalation in Islamist terrorist violence, which corresponds with the latter part of Ramadan, our political leaders have been outdoing one another in their strident calls to halt the bloodshed. Transportation Minister Israel Katz called to declare a national state of emergency. “We must understand that we are in a state of all-out war and act accordingly,” he said. “We must declare a state of emergency.” Education Minister Naftali Bennett presented a wide-ranging plan that includes imprisonment or expulsion of terrorists’ families; the arrest of Hamas operatives in the West Bank, the destruction of illegally built homes in the West Bank; closure of villages from which terrorists have emerged; preventing of Palestinian vehicles from using Route 60; disabling the Internet in the Hebron area; and resumption of full military activity in the West Bank, including in areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held security assessments with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) director Nadav Argaman. But now is not the time for talk, for lofty statements, for threats. Israelis do not want to see politicians thump their chests and issue declarations. It is time to act. It is no secret that the Hebron area is a hotbed of terrorism. Hebron has become the “terrorist capital” of the West Bank. According to data the Shin Bet provided at the beginning of the year, more than a third of the terrorist attacks carried out up to 2016 originated in the Hebron area. The most severe attacks came from the area. Marwan Kawasmeh, 29, and Amar Abu Isa, 32, the despicable Islamist murderers of teenagers Naftali Fraenkel, Gil- Ad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah in June 2014, came from Hebron. The 16-year-old Palestinian who stabbed to death Dafna Meir in Otniel as she valiantly prevented him from entering her home to murder her daughter was from Beit Amra, also in the Hebron area. The terrorists in the Sarona shooting belong to the Mahamra clan, one of the biggest families in Yatta, another town in the Hebron area. The IDF has already taken unprecedented steps in Hebron, which is home to some 700,000 Palestinians, instituting a closure throughout the weekend to conduct a mass search for the terrorist cell that murdered Mark. This is the first time since the kidnapping and murder of the three teenagers two years ago that such a measure has been taken. The IDF has also raised the number of troop being deployed the area and placed more severe restrictions on movement. But more needs to be done. Our leadership has allowed Hebron’s terrorist cancer to fester for too long. Efforts must be focused on fighting this plague while avoiding getting dragged into a prolonged military conflagration in either the West Bank or the Gaza Strip. Israel, like Turkey, the EU, America and other countries around the world is fighting a long war with a distorted and toxic form of Islam. The Hebron hotbed is part of a much broader phenomenon that shows no sign of disappearing any time soon. However, it can and must be contained and gradually overcome, not through declarations but through a decisive and prolonged battle.

Asteroid Day: Near-Earth objects may threaten planet Scientists worldwide are observing Asteroid Day on Thursday, June 30. The day falls on the anniversary of the Tunguska event , the largest asteroid impact yet to be witnessed. In 1908, a powerful asteroid struck the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote Siberian forest in Russia. The asteroid's collision was so powerful that people more than 40 miles away were thrown from their porches and chairs by the sheer force of the impact, according to NASA. It has been more than 100 years since the massive impact leveled about 1,000 square miles of forest. That's like wiping out almost all of the state of Rhode Island. Notable scientists such as Neil deGrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins have supported the event in the past, which aims to educate the public about the dangers of deadly asteroids striking Earth. Increasing awareness On Thursday, talks, seminars and movies about asteroids will take place around the world. The goal is to increase awareness about these giant rocky objects, Asteroid Day co-founder Grigorij Richters told CNN. "This year we really got some solid support from the space agencies. NASA and everyone is on board. We're doing more than ever before," said Richters, who founded Asteroid Day with astrophysicist -- yes, the guitarist for Queen -- and three others. More than a million asteroids have the potential to hit Earth, but in spite of our technology scientists have only discovered one percent of these space rocks, according to Asteroid Day's website . The organization has launched something called 100X Declaration, which calls us to increase our asteroid discovery rate 100 times -- to 100,000 -- within the next decade. About 17,000 private citizens have signed the declaration. "The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it became that the human race has been living on borrowed time," said May in a statement. An actual threat? So how likely is it that an asteroid will hit Earth in the near future? That's a question NASA is tackling as it monitors current impact risks with its Near-Earth Object Program. The agency has a spacecraft called NEOWISE, which stands for Near- Earth Object Wide-field Survey Explorer, to track asteroids and comets that could hit our planet. Since 2013, it has discovered 72 new near-Earth objects. Of those, eight are classified as potentially hazardous to our planet, and could approach or hit Earth one day. Right now, NASA's Near Earth-Object Program says there are no big asteroids at risk of of hitting Earth anytime soon. That doesn't mean we're totally in the clear. Tiny space rocks, like the ones produced by a 2013 meteor blast over Chelyabinsk , Russia, that injured more than 1,000 people, can slip by undetected.

Scientists Find Amphibious Centipede—and It's Horrible (Newser) – It's eight inches long with a painful bite, long legs, and "a horrible dark, greenish-black color. " It's also bound to make you avoid all lakes and streams for the near future. Gregory Edgecombe of London's Natural History Museum says he's discovered a new species of centipede belonging to the giant centipede family Scolopendra that's not only horrible, but the first amphibious centipede species ever found. Edgecombe found two specimens of Scolopendra cataracta —named after the Latin word for "waterfall"—in Laos and a DNA test proved they were unique. However, the "horrific- looking" species, described in journal ZooKeys , had also been found by Edgecombe's colleague while on his honeymoon in Thailand back in 2001, reports National Geographic. George Beccaloni explains he was searching for bugs when he found a centipede hiding under a rock. Upon discovery, it escaped into a stream instead of onto land, as a normal centipede would. When Beccaloni finally captured the centipede, he noted it was a powerful swimmer with a body impervious to water, per Nature World News. But as no centipedes were known to be amphibious, he simply left the centipede in the Natural History Museum's collection. Unbeknownst to scientists, another S. cataracta was there—collected from Vietnam in 1928—but wrongly classified. Edgecombe notes S. cataracta is only found in Southeast Asia, is carnivorous, and "can deliver a painful bite," but it wouldn't kill a human. It's more likely to come in handy if the species "goes into the water at night to hunt aquatic or amphibious invertebrates," Beccaloni says. "People tend to study streams in the tropics during the day, but there is probably a whole other range of interesting amphibious things that come out at night," he adds ominously. (Meet this " centipede from hell. ")

Woman Busted in Plot to Kill Stephen Hawking (Newser) – An American woman was arrested Wednesday in Spain for sending dozens of death threats to Stephen Hawking then trailing him to an astronomy festival in the Canary Islands, Gizmodo reports. According to El Pais , the unnamed 37-year-old woman lives in Norway and has no previous criminal record. Authorities were tipped off by one of her children, who found more than 100 tweets and emails she had sent to Hawking, threatening to kill him. When Hawking gave his first lecture this week at the , he was flanked by two police officers. The woman was arrested nearby. The woman was staying at a hotel near where Hawking was staying. Authorities found evidence of religious extremism, including items contradicting Hawking's claim that God doesn't exist, in her room. They also found details of Hawking's home and office and plans for how to approach him. The BBC reports the woman was also in possession of a map of Hawking's festival itinerary. After her arrest, the woman told police she loves Hawking and would never try to hurt him. Authorities believe the woman has psychological issues. She was given a four-month suspended prison sentence for harassment and threats. In addition, she is not to come within 1,600 feet of Hawking or communicate with him on social media for eight months. Sources say Hawking never felt he was in danger.

Qaeda fighters kidnap US-backed rebel chief in Syria Beirut - US-backed rebels on Sunday accused al-Qaeda-linked fighters of storming their headquarters in northwestern Syria and kidnapping their commander and dozens of other combatants. In an online statement, Jaish al-Tahrir (Liberation Army) said its commander, Mohammad al-Ghabi, was abducted from his father's home in the town of Kafranbel by Al-Nusra Front jihadists on Saturday evening. It said Al-Nusra fighters also "kidnapped more than 40 members of Jaish al-Tahrir" and stole weapons from other bases and checkpoints set up in northwestern Syria. "We call on Al-Nusra Front to immediately release our commander and all the others who were kidnapped," the statement said, urging other Islamist groups to put pressure on the jihadists. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the incident and said the US had supported Jaish al-Tahrir with weapons and even salaries in the past. Al-Nusra has attacked several US-backed groups in northwestern Idlib province - most recently raiding the warehouses of Division 13 in the town of Maarat al-Numan in March. And in the summer of 2015, it kidnapped several members of US-trained rebel group Division 30. Idlib province is controlled by the Army of Conquest, an alliance of Islamist and rebel fighters led by Al-Nusra and hardline group Ahrar al-Sham. Residents of towns like Maarat al-Numan and Kafranbel have demonstrated against Al-Nusra's jihadist ideology. Syria's five-year conflict began with anti-government demonstrations before turning into a complex war increasingly dominated by extremist groups. More than 280 000 people have been killed and millions have been forced to flee their homes since March 2011.

Dessert chef escaped Dhaka siege Dhaka - A dessert chef who is only one of two Italians to survive the Dhaka restaurant siege, says he took refuge in an adjoining house and stayed there long after the massacre ended. Jacopo Bioni, 34, told Sky TG24 TV in a phone interview broadcast on Sunday that, after jumping two storeys down onto the property of a nearby house, the residents, although "understandably" frightened by his sudden appearance, hid him. Bioni said when he saw an attacker point a rifle at a table of Italian diners, he fled to the roof without thinking twice. Bioni said police came to talk to him on Saturday morning and then he left the house in the afternoon. Says Bioni: "I grabbed two things and my passport, headed to the airport and caught the first flight out. " That flight took him to Bangkok and Bioni said he couldn't wait to return to Italy on Monday. He said he had no desire to look at attack photos on social or other media, since he preferred to remember Bangladesh in happier times.

Hockey: India draw with Spain in final game of the 6 nations meet Valencia : India played out a 1-1 draw in their final match of the 6 Nations invitational hockey tournament here tournament. India started off on the front foot, very early in the game and had a penalty corner as early as the 5th minute, which was saved by Quico Cortes in Spain's goal. The action shifted ends very quickly though. From the counterattack, Spain earned a penalty corner which brought out a sharp save from Sreejesh. The see-saw nature of the match went on as India won another penalty corner, saved again by Cortes who was also at hand to put away Talwinder's attempt from the rebound. From there though, Spain started exerting a bit of control over the game and soon made the pressure count. A penalty corner was saved on the line by Sreejesh before an infringement off a defender, earned Spain a stroke. Pau Quemada scored to give Spain the lead as they went into the break. India came out much the same in the second quarter, constantly probing, pushing and earning penalty corners, but Cortes was always up to the task, deflecting it away with sharp saves. In the 18th minute though, Raghunath finally made one count, breaking through to draw the teams level. With a minute of the first half left, India had another glorious chance, but Cortes again pulled off a double - he saved first from the dag flick and then from the rebound to ensure the two teams went into half time with the scores even at 1-1. In the second half, India started taking more control of the ball and exerted pressure on the Spanish flanks, as they sat deep looking to pounce on the counter. Much of it though was thwarted away by Spain. In the final quarter, India pushed high up the pitch and wave upon wave of attacks went into the Spanish circle, as they struggled to defend and keep the honours even. With seconds to play, India would come closest to getting the lead, but the effort hit the crossbar and fell safely to leave the two teams with an equal share of the points.

Life thrown out of gear as heavy rains pound Mumbai and Pune Mumbai/Pune : Normal life was thrown out of gear in Mumbai with the city being lashed by heavy rains in the last 24 hours, even as incessant showers continued to hit other cities like Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Santacruz recorded 94.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours while Colaba recorded 48.3 mm rains during the same period. The IMD has predicted "very heavy" showers for the mega-polis in the next 24 hours. "We expect continuous intermittent rains for the city (Mumbai) and suburbs and very heavy rainfall in certain areas in the next 24 hours," an IMD official said. Some low-lying areas in the country's financial capital, particularly in Central Mumbai, witnessed water logging with people wading about in knee-deep waters in Dadar, Parel, Worli. The situation was similar in Andheri and other suburbs. Suburban trains on all the three lines - Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour (of the Central Railway) were running 15-20 minutes behind schedules due to water-logging on tracks in some sections during the day. Meanwhile, incessant rains continued to lash Pune and many parts of western Maharashtra since last night, bringing a long awaited relief to the region which had been experiencing a chronically deficient rainfall. Steady showers that started in Pune region yesterday grew into a heavy downpour by night and continued this morning, marking first vigorous monsoon activity of the season since last month. The wet spell also resulted in an increase in water levels of the four dams that supply water to Pune city ---namely Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar. Pune city recorded 73 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, MeT department reported. Other parts of western Maharashtra, including Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli, too have been experiencing heavy rains since yesterday, reports said. Meanwhile, Nashik city and its adjoining areas also experienced good downpour since yesterday after a dry spell last month.

Congolese warlord sentenced to 18 years for war crimes The International Criminal Court convicted Bemba of murder, rape and pillaging between October 2002 and March 2003, when forces under his command were sent to CAR to quell a coup attempt. The court found the crimes "to be of serous gravity," noting that some of the rapes were committed "against particularly defenseless victims" and "with particular cruelty. " "The arrest, conviction and sentencing of Jean-Pierre Bemba sends out a strong signal that those who commit crimes under international law will ultimately be held responsible for their crimes, " Amnesty International's Stephen Cockburn said in a statement Tuesday. "It also sends a clear message that impunity for sexual violence as a tool of war will not be tolerated and makes clear that military commanders must take all necessary steps to prevent their subordinates from committing such heinous acts," said Cockburn, a deputy regional director for west and central Africa. Bemba led the Movement for the Liberation of the Congo (Mouvement de Libération du Congo) and became one of the Congo's four vice presidents in 2003 as part of that country's transitional government. Prosecutors say Bemba knew that MLC forces under his authority and control were committing or about to commit war crimes. More than 5,200 victims were authorized to participate in Bemba's trial and are eligible for reparations. Bemba was arrested by Belgian authorities in May 2008 and surrendered to the court the next month. He was convicted on March 21 of this year of two counts of crimes against humanity and three counts of war crimes. He will get credit for the eight years he has already spent behind bars.

Owaisi's legal aid offer to 'terrorists' lands him in trouble; BJP, JD(U) demands arrest Meerut/Hyderabad : A petition seeking a sedition case against AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi was filed in a court in Meerut even as BJP and JD(U) today demanded action against him and his immediate arrest. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi Slamming Owaisi over his decision to provide legal help to men arrested by NIA for allegedly being members of an ISIS module, the BJP accused him of "betraying" the country and sought action against him for "helping" the terror group. Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh demanded immediate arrest of the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad and asked the TRS government to register a sedition case against the leader of the Hyderabad-based party. JD(U) spokesperson Ajay Alok also demanded that Owaisi be put behind bars. Owaisi on his part said the offer of legal help was being "blown out of proportion" and that the courts can take a view. Anil Kumar Bakshi, a member of UP Bar Council, in his petition seeking registration of a case against Owaisi for alleged offences including sedition charge alleged his remarks amounted to treason and promoted terrorism. "Owaisi's remark also shows that he is supporting terrorism," he alleged. Bakshi said he filed a complaint yesterday with Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) seeking filing of cases under IPC sections 114 (abetting the crime), 115 (abetment of offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life), 117 (abetting commission of offence), 121 (waging war against the country), 121A (conspiracy to commit offences punishable by section 121), 124A (sedition), 131 (abetting mutiny), 132 (abetment of mutiny), and 200 (using as true such declaration knowing it to be false). Besides, sections 153 (promoting enmity between different groups), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 153A (act of promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code were also mentioned in the complaint. The hearing on the complaint will be held on July 6, said the court. Owaisi on Friday said his party would provide legal help to the youths arrested by the NIA on charges of involvement in an alleged ISIS terror module, but asserted his party does not support terrorism. Senior BJP leader and Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi alleged that Owaisi is giving "oxygen" to terrorists and that he is seen as "standing with extremists". "Owaisi is directly or indirectly helping the ISIS which had come up with a video in which it threatened to target India. This is betrayal of the country. On the one hand you condemn the ISIS and on the other hand you support those who are involved in such acts. "The investigating agencies should take action against him within the legal framework. Those who support terrorism directly or indirectly should be condemned," BJP National Secretary Shrikant Sharma said in Delhi. In Hyderabad, Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh also demanded that the Centre derecognise the MIM party. "Think over it... I request the chief minister(of Telangana) to ban MIM party and book sedition case against Asaduddin and arrest him immediately," he told reporters.

My Shop: Entrepreneur's fears for her Polish deli empire As EU migrants face a backlash in Cambridgeshire in the wake of the referendum result, the entrepreneur behind a small chain of Polish delis fears for her future. Elena Hrabovenska goes to the staff area to retrieve the letter from her handbag. From the way she has spoken about it, I'm expecting a long, heartfelt message. But it's a simple note scrawled on scrap paper: "My wife told me that hate mail and phone calls have been made to the Polish shops in Huntingdon. The people who do this are a minority. The Poles add to Britain: they have always been welcome. " Days after the historic referendum to leave the EU, cards with the words "No more Polish Vermin" were left outside schools and homes in Huntingdon, where Elena runs a Polish deli. "On that day five British people came into the shop and they said they are really sorry. They are ashamed of that person who's done it. " Elena's main concern, she says, is that words will escalate to physical violence. After struggling to find the right words, she says: "Around the world you will always find someone who has the stone instead of the heart. " Elena owns three Polish delis, one in Huntingdon and two nearby in Peterborough. She came to England in 2003 from Ukraine, aged 19. She arrived alone on a working visa, with £100 in her pocket. She knew nobody. At the time there was only one shop selling Central and Eastern European food in Peterborough, she recalls. Despite having a good grasp of English, she struggled to find the ingredients she needed to make the traditional soups she missed. This gave her the idea to open a deli with food imported from Central and Eastern Europe, with staff that can speak Polish and Russian. A few years after arriving in the country, her first deli was born. To stock that first shop, her husband would continually make the 36-hour round trip to Poland by van. There was a clear business opportunity as more and more Poles arrived in the UK, after they were given the right to work here in 2004. Elena's business grew and a decade later, she employs 20 people and has two refrigerated trucks making the journey to Poland and back. There is an obvious irony, of course, that she was a Ukrainian building a Polish deli empire. But in fact many of the Polish delis that have emerged in the UK are owned by non-Poles. Many are run by Turkish businessmen and women. It is a similar phenomenon to Bangladeshis owning Indian restaurants. When asked how she feels about the referendum result, her first thought is for her business. "We put against this business basically everything, the time we could spend as a family... to achieve this place we would work 48 hours without a wink [of sleep]. " Her fear is that her delis will be hit by a weaker pound and ultimately, if the UK leaves the single market, import tariffs on Polish food. "I feel responsible for my staff. I don't want to face that time when I have to announce, 'I'm sorry girls I have to close, I have to cut staff or hours.' They have families as well, they have children. "All of them were asking what is going to happen and I didn't want to answer. "[But] I know we live in the 21st Century, someone is not going to knock on our doors and throw us away. " Peterborough voted by 60.9% in favour of leaving the European Union. Customers have not talked about it, "like they are in shock", says Elena. But the result did not surprise her. She has noticed ill-will towards migrants in the city. Peterborough is often cited as a place strongly affected by EU internal migration. The last census revealed that its population rose by almost 18% between 2001 and 2011, reaching 183,631. People from Central or Eastern Europe made up 7.7% of the city's population by 2011. Many are drawn by the seasonal farm work available nearby. "Some immigrants are not perfect and put a black mark on the immigrant's name," says Elena. However, she says she wants people to remember that "a lot of families are coming here to seek a better life and work hard". Her latest, newly-opened shop is a bright mini-supermarket, neatly tucked behind a Tesco, nestled next to a Chinese takeaway. She reckons 25% of her customers here are English. With so many rival Polish delis, she explains, she has had to open this larger shop to compete on choice. Despite successful expansion, migration of another kind has posed the biggest threat to her business, she explains. Gridlock at Calais caused by illegal migrants has disrupted her fragile supply chain. She has had to unload trucks through the night to make up for lost transit time. On one of the walls in Elena's shop you will see Polish football scarves, magazines, adverts and books that are all in Polish. "When customers come into the shop they think they are back in Poland," remarks Elena. So does she think shops like hers represent a failure to integrate with the local community? This kind of shop "will vanish", she predicts, after a pause, by way of answer. "There is a new generation coming. Obviously they will still have in their hearts that their parents were Polish, but they will integrate into the English community as happened with other nationalities. "There will be mixed families, with Polish mums and English dads, for example, two cultures mixed together. "It's going to soften. " Follow business reporter Dougal Shaw on Twitter. 90 China incinerator plans lead thousands to protest Thousands of people in southern China have turned out in an unusually large protest against plans for a new incinerator. Witnesses said at least 3,000 officers were in Lubu on Sunday as a protest of 10,000 people turned violent and some demonstrators tried to break in to government offices. But the authorities said there were just 1,400 protesters at most. They said 21 people who "led the trouble" were taken away by police. Authorities also said police were injured but did not say how many, or how seriously. One witness told the BBC a police officer was seriously injured while two civilians suffered head injuries. The incinerator, which would generate power as well as burning waste, is scheduled to be built near the Xi River, the area's main water source. One resident who gave only her surname, Lin, told the Associated Press agency: "We worry about air and water pollution. "The river is a major source of our drinking water. " Residents said they took to the streets spontaneously after Lubu's town government announced the project was being halted. No reason was given for the delay, which residents worried would be only temporary. In a post on social media, the Communist Party propaganda department for the district wrote that "some ordinary people who are unaware of the truth led by some troublemakers attempted to storm the Lubu town government". It said that those who had attacked police officers should surrender themselves, while people inside the government offices should leave immediately. More than 70,000 people live in Lubu, which is in Guangdong province. A resident told the BBC that further protests are planned for Monday, but will not be as well attended because many people work outside the town.

Israeli politician Tzipi Livni 'summoned by UK police' Israeli politician Tzipi Livni was summoned by UK police for questioning over alleged war crimes while in London last week, Israeli officials have said. Ms Livni received a letter from the police on Thursday but the summons was cancelled after talks between Israel and the UK, Israeli media reports say. The case relates to the 2008-9 conflict in Gaza, when Ms Livni was foreign minister and deputy PM, they say. UK police said there was no ongoing war crimes investigation. Correspondents say pro-Palestinian activists have filed a series of complaints against Israeli officials, including Ms Livni, in recent years. An arrest warrant for Ms Livni was issued in the UK in 2009, triggering a diplomatic row between the two countries. Ms Livni cancelled her visit. In 2011, UK law was changed to make it more difficult to obtain arrest warrants for Israeli public figures visiting in an official capacity. On this occasion, Ms Livni - now a Knesset member for the centre-left Zionist Union - visited the UK to participate in a conference organised by Haaretz newspaper and the British Jewish community . The summons was "on a voluntary basis" and by consent, a senior Israeli official quoted by Haaretz said. The questioning was to have been about suspected war crimes and violations of the Geneva Conventions during the 2008-9 Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, the newspaper added. The operation, involving Israeli air strikes and a ground invasion in response to rocket attacks on southern Israel, led to almost 1,400 Palestinian and 13 Israeli deaths. Urgent diplomatic contacts were made between the two countries, which resulted in Ms Livni being given diplomatic immunity and declining the invitation to questioning. In a statement, the Israeli embassy in London expressed its concern about the request for an interview. "Israel stands shoulder to shoulder with its global partners - including the UK - in both its commitment to the rule of law and its ongoing fight against the threat of terrorism and extremism," it said. "It would expect that those sharing this commitment act to prevent the abuse of their legal system for political ends and to confront attempts to draw a moral equivalence between those perpetrating terror and those fighting against it. 92 The Indian man who restored a 4,500-year-old mummy Anupam Sah, the head conservator of Mumbai's Prince of Wales museum, has successfully restored a 4,500-year-old mummy belonging to the state museum in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad. Sriram Karri reports on how he did it. The mummy, believed to be that of Egyptian Princess Naishu, daughter of the Pharaoh VI, possibly born around 2,500 BC, was the pride of the museum since 1920, but had fallen into a state of disrepair. A little over a year ago, curators discovered that the mummy had begun to destabilise and spoil - partly because of neglect and partly due to a lack of knowledge on how to stem the rot. Efforts to get expert advice from various international agencies and museums, including the British Museum in London and museums in Egypt, did not yield positive results. In the meantime, the painted hard crust covering the cartilage of the mummy began to crack and fall apart, with fragments and patches over the face, shoulders, chest and feet starting to peel off. As a result, the bandaged areas began to get exposed, causing them to become loose and unravel. This also had an impact on the internal bandages. Finally, desperate authorities turned to Mr Sah, who worked on the project from late March to April along with a team of six experts. They rebound the bandages without using any chemicals or "external" additions - a process conducted on location over the period of a few weeks. Princess Naishu's mummy has been in Hyderabad State Museum since around 1920, when she was purchased in Egypt by Nazeer Nawaz Jung, son-in-law of Mir Mehboob Ali Khan, who was the ruling Nizam of Hyderabad. Though it is not clear if he purchased it from a private collector or a museum, he is believed to have paid over £1,000 for it. Mr Jung gifted the mummy to the next Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, who donated it to the Museum. It has been kept in an airtight glass enclosure since then. Speaking to the BBC, NR Visalatchy, director, archaeology and museums, government of Telangana, explained that out of the six unimpeachably authentic Egyptian mummies in Indian museums, Naishu, is the only one in south India. Until recently, it was believed that Naishu died aged around 18 while she was pregnant, but recent medical examinations and tests conducted by the museum have established that she was closer to 24. Most Egyptian mummies contain no part of the brain as it is completely scrapped off during the mummification process, but this one had significant traces of her brain intact, Mr Sah said. What made the job even more complicated, according to Mr Sah, was that the team could not use regular tools and processes, including basic examination techniques, treatment methods and usage of infra-red, ultraviolet lights and spectrometers for colour analysis. "It was too fragile and risky to move the mummy. We had to be careful because the cloth had become very brittle. We assessed that we could restore the bandage to its near-original state without causing any damage by retying the cartilage in around 10 days. "Subsequently, we had to take her wrapped in multiple layers of cotton to a diagnostic centre to X-ray and CT-scan the cartilage. We had to take her with great care and security, and bring her back before the sun became too strong," Mr Sah told the BBC. Though the scan and X-ray reports have declared her "fit", some more cosmetic protection is lined up ahead. "We are now getting a nitrogen chamber for her - which will completely ensure zero-oxidation or further ageing. It is a rare piece of Egyptian history in the heart of Hyderabad. It thrills me every time I come to see her that she was living 25 centuries before Christ. We will ensure we keep her safe," Ms Visalatchy said. Mr Sah, who founded and runs the non-profit Himalayan Society for Heritage and Art Conservation, said there was a low but improving sense of heritage conservation in Indian society. "We held for a long while that the present generation owned heritage. Today, we are slowly realising we are merely its custodians, who have the responsibility to preserve it," he said. "We will not re-create a new dress for her; merely ensure that the original does not degenerate anymore. " Sriram Karri is a Hyderabad-based writer

Chibok girl's life with Boko Haram in Nigeria A month ago, the first of a group of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped from Chibok was freed in north-eastern Nigeria after two years in the hands of Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The girl gained widespread coverage when she was taken to meet President Muhammadu Buhari. Her brother, who was overwhelmed to be reunited with his sister, was told to return home by state officials during the visit and says he now has no idea of the whereabouts of her or their mother, who accompanied them. Yakubu Nkeki, a spokesman for the parents of the missing Chibok schoolgirls, and a close friend of the girl, says he has known her since childhood and he too hasn't had contact with her since her visit to meet the president. He told the BBC how, after she was first released, they sat together for hours and she recounted her ordeal from the very beginning. While describing how she was taken from her school in Chibok town, she laughed, something Mr Nkeki says he found very out of place. "After they were taken from the school," he tells me, "they were put in one place as a large group but after a few weeks they were taken further into the Sambisa Forest. There, some of the larger girls were forced to marry the militants, but at that time she was not given up for marriage because she was seen as a small girl. " She was terrified at the thought of being forced to marry someone she did not know or love but she was also relieved that she had been spared. She spoke of the many military airstrikes on the Boko Haram fighters which meant the group had to move around often to avoid detection. The girls were then split into smaller groups and moved to different locations. She was in a group of about six girls, and they were taken to a big building surrounded by a large fence without an entrance. "They had to climb over with a ladder to get in but once in they had no way of getting out again," Mr Nkeki said. "By this time, the girls had been mixed up with other girls who had been captured. They could not understand each other because they all spoke different languages. " She said that after about six months in the building, her worst fears came true when she was forced to marry one of the Boko Haram militants. The man told her that he had also been abducted from the town of Mubi and fored to become a fighter. The building didn't have any food in it apart from a large bag of maize which they soaked in water and then ate raw. Later they found a large stone which they used to grind the maize and for vegetables, they opted for leaves from the trees. Soon afterwards, the men started going out to raid other villages for food, cooking utensils and household items. She told Mr Nkeki that one day the group heard a loud blast outside. It was an explosion that made a huge hole in the fence and some of the girls saw a chance to escape and ran into the thick forest nearby. This was not a good move because many Boko Haram militants were camped there and many of those who ran away were eventually caught. Now married to one of the militants, she said she could not escape. She said she feared she would never see her mother again and whenever she was alone she would spend up to an hour on her knees, praying that she would be rescued. Although she told her captors that she had accepted their religion, inwardly she held on to her Christian faith. She knew what could happen to her if she did otherwise, as she had witnessed the gruesome killing of another girl for refusing to convert to Islam. The militants buried her waist-deep in the ground and the other captives were made to stone her to death. "Boko Haram drove them to another part of Sambisa Forest," continues Mr Nkeki. "The girl lived with her husband and he found grass to make a thatched shelter for them in the forest. Now there were only three Chibok girls left in the group because the other three were lost, possibly killed in military attacks. She said that in that area there were many groups of militant fighters and large numbers of women and children with them. There were more airstrikes and many of the Boko Haram fighters were killed so her husband said he was no longer willing to continue fighting. By this time she had had a baby. That's when she and her husband decided to escape. She had gained trust in him, believed he wasn't like the other Boko Haram members and she became confident enough to leave with him. They walked for two days before arriving in a village called Bali. This was their first contact with the outside world, free from Boko Haram control. The villagers there were mostly women and children and her husband, who was the only young man around, looked out of place. He became afraid of being caught so he decided to go and hide in the bush. They stayed in the area for two to three weeks until some vigilantes arrived and asked her if there were any people who had just arrived in the village. She told them she was among the girls taken from Chibok. She also told them where her husband was hiding, so they took them and the baby to her home and she could finally see her family again. "Mum, is this really you? " she cried as she was reunited with her mother. Nineteen other parents did not live to see if their own girls would also be freed, some died in Boko Haram attacks and others from suspected stress- related complications. The girl is believed to now be undergoing rehabilitation and debriefing sessions with intelligence agencies to help provide them with information. She has asked them not to harm her husband, as she considers him a good man. Military spokesman General Rabe Abubakar said she was being well looked after. "Nobody is hiding anybody, we have to safeguard her and give her all the necessary security to recuperate well. As soon as everything is sorted out, she will be made accessible," he told the Associated Press. Since being rescued, the girl has had little access to the outside world, so right now she might not have the freedom she anticipated but after two years in the hands of Boko Haram, it is freedom nonetheless. 96 BBQ mishaps that could ruin your Fourth of July weekend This Fourth of July weekend, millions of Americans will be gathering with family and friends for backyard barbecues. But before you fire up the grill this holiday, there are some safety risks you should take note of. From food poisoning to accidental fires, preventable dangers could put you and your guests at risk. Click through for some expert advice to help everyone safely enjoy your next cookout... Avoiding food poisoning starts way before your barbecue even begins. When grocery shopping, buy cold food like meat and poultry right before check-out and separate these items from other foods in your cart. To avoid cross- contamination , place meat and poultry into their own plastic bags so their juices won't drip on other food. At home, refrigerate meat and poultry immediately and freeze portions that won't be used within one or two days. Before grilling, thaw completely so it cooks more easily. The safest way to thaw meat is to place it in the refrigerator or in sealed packages in cold water. The microwave can also be used for quicker thawing. If you'd like to marinate your meat, do so in the refrigerator, not on the counter. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, poultry and cubed meat or stew meat can be marinated safely for up to two days, while beef, veal, pork, and lamb roasts, chops, and steaks may be marinated up to five days. To use marinade as a sauce, reserve a portion of the marinade before placing raw meat or poultry in it, or make sure to bring it to a boil before you serve to make sure harmful bacteria are destroyed. Keep food cold until ready to grill. Avoid cross-contamination by keeping plenty of clean utensils and platters handy and not reusing them when handling different raw meat and poultry products. To kill harmful bacteria and avoid illness, use a food thermometer to ensure food is cooked thoroughly and has reached a safe internal temperature. The USDA recommends the following minimal internal temperatures: Never partially grill meat or poultry and return to cooking it later. Keep food hot until served, at 140° F or warmer, and serve with clean utensils -- never ones that touched raw meat or poultry. If you clean your grill with a wire-bristle brush , you may be unknowingly putting yourself and your guests at risk. Earlier this year, a study conducted at the University of Missouri School of Medicine found more than 1,600 injuries from wire-bristle grill brushes reported in emergency rooms since 2002. Loose bristles can easily fall off the brush during cleaning and end up in food, which if eaten, can cause injuries in the mouth, throat, and tonsils, the study authors warn. "Wire-bristle brush injuries are a potential consumer safety issue, so it is important that people, manufacturers and health providers be aware of the problem," Dr. David Chang, associate professor of otolaryngology at the MU School of Medicine, said in a statement. "If doctors are unaware that this problem exists, they may not order the appropriate tests or capture the correct patient history to reach the right diagnosis. " Chang recommends the following tips to avoid potential injuries: According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 8,900 home fires are caused by grilling each year, with July being the peak month. To prevent fires associated with barbecuing, keep grills well away from homes and deck railings. Safely turn on the grill by first opening the lid, turn on the propane tank, switch on the grill burner, and push the ignition button (if you have one). If the grill doesn't ignite, let gas dissipate for at least five minutes before trying again. When you're finished, to keep excess gas from leaking out, turn the gas tank off first, then turn off the grill burners. In very hot weather, food should never sit out for more than an hour, and in general, toss food that has been sitting out longer than two hours. If you want to save food as leftovers, refrigerate promptly in shallow containers. More summer safety tips: Ashley Welch covers health and wellness for CBSNews.com

Rory McIlroy: Golfer pulls out of Rio Olympics amid Zika fears The sport is making a return to the Summer Games for the first time since 1904, and organizers have had to deal with other big names pulling out, notably major winners Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen. "After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero," McIlroy said in a statement. "After speaking with those closest to me, I've come to realize that my health and my family's health comes before anything else. "Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take. " While the symptoms of the virus -- which include a rash, headaches and joint pain -- aren't severe, Zika has been linked to microcephaly in newborn babies and some cases of the muscle-weakening disease Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. As well as McIlroy, Scott and Oosthuizen, three-time major winner Vijay Singh and Australia's Marc Leishman -- citing Zika -- have also decided not to compete . South Korea unveils anti-Zika uniform The Olympic Council of Ireland said in a statement that it is "extremely disappointed" not to be taking Rory to the Olympics but "respect his decision. " "Rory was set to be one of the big stars of Rio 2016," the organization said. "But now there is an opportunity for another Irish golfer to take up the chance to become an Olympian and participate in golf's historic return to the Olympic Games after a 112-year absence. 100 A ghoulish tour of medieval punishments The Oxfordshire town of Thame has announced it is considering bringing back stocks as a tourist attraction, but which other settlements have kept their instruments of medieval correction? Stocks date back to at least the time of the Black Death in the 14th Century. Labourers were banned from leaving their homes to find better wages elsewhere and those who broke the law were put in stocks. Every town or village was required by law to have a set. But being put in the stocks was a fairly minor punishment. Many places had whipping posts, pillories and even gallows. Here's a ghoulish tour of England's harsh past. Stocks were used to hold the legs of miscreants - usually vagabonds or drunkards - while people threw rotten vegetables at them. Some places specified only "soft material" was thrown, effectively preventing victims from being stoned (or potatoed?) to death. David Bretherton, the driving force behind Thame's whimsy, insists being put in the stocks wasn't always nasty. "If the person was well-liked they might have been showered with flowers. In other cases, they would have had their shoes and socks removed and their feet tickled. " Most stocks were wooden and therefore susceptible to rot - although in some villages they were metallic. Iron stocks in West Derby village were placed in their current position in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII, which is a tribute rarely seen today. The phrase "laughing stock" - defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "an object of general ridicule" probably didn't originate from the use of stocks, etymologists say. A "stock" in that sense was an archaic word for a branchless tree stump or post and came to represent a person who was laughed at. Often confused with stocks, pillories are further up the medieval punishment rankings. Whereas stocks hold the legs, pillories hold the neck and wrists. Writer Daniel Defoe was put in a pillory on three days in July 1703, following the publication of The Shortest Way with the Dissenters, which was deemed seditious libel. According to History Today's Richard Cavendish, Defoe "was put for an hour each time in three of the busiest places in London - outside the Royal Exchange in Cornhill (near his own home), near the conduit in Cheapside and finally in Fleet Street by Temple Bar. "It seems to have been raining steadily most of the time, which though uncomfortable would have kept the crowds down, and the experience proved more of a triumph than an ordeal," he says. "All that was thrown at him were flowers while his friends sold the spectators copies of The Shortest Way and [a new work] A Hymn to the Pillory which he had composed for the occasion. " Defoe's experience, though, was atypical. Some people, having been pelted with dead cats and dogs, stones, saucepans and other missiles - as well as rotten fruit and eggs - were maimed or even killed, Mr Cavendish says. A gibbet can be any instrument of public execution, including guillotine, executioner's block, impalement stake, hanging gallows, or related scaffold, but "gibbeting" is specifically using a gallows to display the body of an executed criminal. Winter's Gibbet in Elsdon, in Northumberland, is where a man called William Winter was suspended in chains after being hanged in Newcastle in 1792 for the murder of an old woman. Apparently, his rotting corpse dangled there for many years, until the structure fell apart. In 1867 a replica was built on the site, complete with a wooden mannequin. The body was stolen but a wooden head remains. Pieces of the gibbet were once reputed to be able to cure toothache, if rubbed on the gums. The remains of an original set of gallows can be seen in Potsford Woods near Wickham Market in Suffolk. The story goes that a Jonah Snell bludgeoned to death a man and his son while they were working. When he was captured he was still carrying the murder weapon and was sentenced to death. Reports claim that he was dragged up to the hanging frame on his back, giving the name "Dragarse" to the hill on which it stands. There's a replica guillotine in Halifax, which harks back to the time when the town was a major producer of cloth. The fabric had to be dried in the open air and was therefore easy to steal, so as a deterrent the crime became punishable by death in some cases. The theft of items above a certain value led to a beheading. Between 1541 and 1650, 53 men and women were executed this way. The replica was built in 1974 on the original site in Gibbet Street. A casting from the original blade is on display at the Bankfield Museum in Boothtown. A complete ducking stool is on display in Leominster Priory , Herefordshire, and the people of the town are so taken with the idea that the town clock, commissioned for the millennium, features a moving ducking stool depiction. It was a wooden or iron armchair on to which the culprit was strapped. The chair was attached to a long wooden beam, usually located alongside a pond or river, and was lowered into the water. The last recorded ducking cases in England are both from Leominster. Jenny Pipes, a notorious scold, was dunked in 1809. By 1817, the water in the ducking pond was so low Sarah Leeke was merely wheeled round the town in the chair. The tumbrel (the wagonny bit) of a ducking stool is in the crypt of the Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick. There is also a ducking chair in Canterbury where the High Street meets the River Stour. Geoffrey Abbott, author of Book of Execution, Rack, Rope, and Red-Hot Pincers, says: "Repeated duckings routinely proved fatal, the victim dying of shock or drowning. " A replica ducking stool can be seen (and posed next to) in Ducking Stool Lane in Christchurch, Dorset. There was also an instrument called a cucking stool - alternatively known as a "scolding stool" or a "stool of repentance". It was a chair placed in public view, upon which the targeted person was forced to sit while being paraded through the town. The village of Stow in Lincolnshire still has a whipping post situated near the church. While the people of Norton in Shropshire were clearly of an efficient bent, as they combined their stocks and whipping post. They are opposite the building, which was used as the court in medieval times.
