Updated June 28, 2021 PORTFOLIO REVIEW SUMMARY AUSTRALIA d’Arenberg - McLaren Vale, South Australia Chester Osborn d’Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defi ned the region. A century on, under the stewardship of fourth generation winemaker Chester Osborn, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed—all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year. From the Stump Jumps through to the highly-regarded Icons, these wines offer value, individuality and a true taste of McLaren Vale. • Australia, Western Australia: Happy 50Th, Margaret River! Joe Czerwinski the Wine Advocate | December 29, 2017
Australia, Western Australia: Happy 50th, Margaret River! Joe Czerwinski The Wine Advocate | December 29, 2017 I hope the good folks in Swan Valley, Pemberton, Mount Barker and the like will forgive me for this focus on Margaret River, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of commercial wine-grape plantings there in 2017. Building on the visit of UC Davis professor Harold Olmo in the 1950s, who suggested that parts of southwestern WA would be suitable for grape growing, John Gladstones, a lupin researcher with an interest in wine, published papers in 1965 and 1966 touting Margaret River as perhaps being even better for grapes than Mount Barker. There was a bit of local controversy over whether 1966 or 1967 was the appropriate birth year for the region, but the claim for the 1967 plantings by Perth-based cardiologist Tom Cullity at what is now Vasse Felix seems to have won out. Other early pioneers in Margaret River include Moss Wood and Cullen, followed soon thereafter by Woodlands, Cape Mentelle and Leeuwin Estate. The Margaret River region is actually a wide, shallow peninsula that sticks out into the Indian Ocean. Its southern end is lapped by the Southern Ocean, which creates a temperature gradient from the cooler south to the warmer north. The longest-established vineyards lie toward the center of the continuum, in the subregion of Wilyabrup, now highly regarded for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay production has, generally speaking, moved south, into cooler regions. Margaret River represents only something like 2.3% of all wine produced in Australia, but it accounts for a vast majority of the trophy-winning Cabernets and Chardonnays in the Australian national wine show system.

  • Introduction
1 Sustaining the international wine industry in the midst of climate change: what is Australia doing? James Turton PhD Candidate Department of Business Law Faculty of Business and Economics Macquarie University Sydney, Australia INTRODUCTION This paper will examine how climate change will impact the sustainability of the Australian wine industry. Climate change will effect the wine industry in a variety of areas including terroir, timing of grape picking, costs involved in wine production, and the quality of wines produced. In an era where climate change concerns are on the minds of an ever-increasing number of people, developing strategies to mitigate the potential adverse effects on the wine industry has become critical. Consequently, various challenges exist that wineries will need to address in order to remain competitive. Challenges faced by the wine industry in responding to climate change are in area management given the increasing incidences of adverse weather conditions such as drought, flood and fires causing physical damage and smoke taint. Production and marketing approaches (labelling, brands, consumer behaviour etc.) also need to be 2 addressed. Wineries in Australia have responded to these challenges. New processes for producing wine in a more sustainable way have been implemented. However, while these processes usually result in wines of higher quality, they come at an additional cost that the public struggles to justify paying. These challenges look as if they are going to increase in size and frequency as a consequence of climate change. CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE: SOME BACKGROUND The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines climate change as “a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., by using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer”.
