Abstract A case series study was conducted between December 2009 and April 2010 at the donkey sanctuary and SPANA clinics in Bishoftu town to determine the major causes of equine colic. During the study period a total of 121 (9.1%) episodes of colic were recorded in a population of 1336 equine (800 horses, 500 donkeys and 36 mules). From the total cases 93 (11.6%) and 28 (5.6%) were horses and donkeys, respectively. No mule was observed with colic problem. The proportion of colic cases in horses was significantly (p=0.0003) higher than that of donkeys.

However, post operative complications remain common and these impact negatively on horse welfare, probability of survival, return to previous use and the costs of treatment. Multiple studies have investigated risk factors for post operative complications following surgical management of colic and interventions that might be effective in reducing the likelihood of these occurring. The findings from these studies are frequently contradictory and the evidence for many interventions is lacking or inconclusive. This review discusses the current available evidence and identifies areas where further studies are necessary and factors that should be taken into consideration in study design. • Incomplete Ileocecal Bypass for Ileal Pathology in Horses: 21 Cases (2012–2019)
animals Case Report Incomplete Ileocecal Bypass for Ileal Pathology in Horses: 21 Cases (2012–2019) Gessica Giusto, Anna Cerullo , Federico Labate and Marco Gandini * Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Turin, Largo Paolo Braccini 2-5, 10095 Grugliasco (TO), Italy; [email protected] (G.G.); [email protected] (A.C.); [email protected] (F.L.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Simple Summary: The ileal pathologies represent a problem often found during colic. At exploratory laparotomy, in cases where there is involvement of the ileum and there is a suspicion of an ileocecal valve disfunction, the surgeon may be faced with the choice of whether to resect the intestinal tract involved, do nothing, or perform an ileocecal bypass without resection of the ileum. This latter tech- nique may represent a valid alternative to extensive manipulation, and it may reduce the recurrence of ileal occlusion and post-operative complication. This study aims to describe clinical findings, surgical techniques, and post-operative progress of horses who have undergone an incomplete ileocecal bypass in case of strangulating or non-strangulating ileum pathologies. Incomplete ileocecal bypass may represent an effective and safe surgical technique in these cases and in all cases of ileal pathologies treated without resection to avoid recurrence and reduce complications. Abstract: Background: Incomplete ileocecal bypass can be performed in cases in which an ileal disfunction is suspected but resection of the diseased ileum is not necessary. Objectives: To describe the clinical findings, the surgical technique, and the outcome of 21 cases of colic with ileal pathologies that underwent an incomplete ileocecal bypass.

  • Colic in Your Horse | UMN Extension
2/17/2020 Colic in your horse | UMN Extension University of Minnesota Extension https://extension.umn.edu Colic in your horse What is colic? Colic indicates a painful problem in your horse’s abdomen. Because colic is often unpredictable and frequently unpreventable, it’s a common concern for horse owners. Horses are naturally prone to colic. Fortunately, over 80 percent of colic types respond well to treatment on the farm. Signs of colic in your horse Frequently looking at their side. Biting or kicking their flank or belly. Lying down and/or rolling. Little or no passing of manure. Fecal balls smaller than usual. Passing dry or mucus (slime)-covered manure. Poor eating behavior, may not eat all their grain or hay. Change in drinking behavior. Heart rate over 45 to 50 beats per minute. Tacky gums. Long capillary refill time. Off-colored mucous membranes. Caring for the colicky horse Because colic is often unpredictable and frequently unpreventable, it’s a common concern for horse owners. A colicky horse will commonly bite at its side and roll. Preventing colic Each colic is unique. You should balance the factors involved in your horse’s care, feeding and activity. Work with your veterinarian and barn manager (if boarding) to determine the best plan for your horse. Revisit those plans annually to alter your practices due changes in activity, feeding, illness and other factors. Horses are prone to colic and many types of colic aren’t preventable. But you can take some simple steps to ensure your horse is at the lowest possible risk for colic.

One cause of colic is parasitic infection of the gut. Variousdrugs, anthelmintics, can be used to reduce or eliminate such parasites. However, frequent use has led to problems of drug resistance, whereby many countries now allow anthelmintics to be used on a prescription-only basis. In Sweden, this has led to a concern that parasitic-related colic in horses is increasing.

  • Evaluation of the Colic in Horses: Decision for Referral
Evaluation of the Colic in Horses: Decision for Referral a b, Vanessa L. Cook, VetMB, PhD , Diana M. Hassel, DVM, PhD * KEYWORDS Horse Colic Diagnostic tests Evaluation KEY POINTS A thorough evaluation of the horse with colic allows early identification of cases that need referral for intensive medical or surgical intervention. Early referral improves the horse’s prognosis and reduces client cost by allowing interven- tion while the horse is systemically stable. Evaluation should start with a detailed history, thorough physical examination, rectal ex- amination, and passage of a nasogastric tube. More advanced diagnostics, including transabdominal ultrasonography, abdomino- centesis, and point-of-care measurement of lactate and glucose, can aid in the decision for referral. INTRODUCTION: NATURE OF THE PROBLEM Colic is the most common emergency in equine practice with approximately 4 out of every 100 horses having an episode of colic each year.1 Of the horses that are evalu- ated by a veterinarian in private practice, approximately 7% to 10% have a lesion that requires surgical correction.2 Although this may be obvious with severe, acute stran- gulating obstructions, most colic cases are not quite as black and white. Early identi- fication and referral of horses with a surgical lesion is critical to obtain a successful outcome. Early referral allows general anesthesia and surgery to occur while the horse is systemically stable and intestinal damage is mild, and this decreases postoperative morbidity and mortality and reduces client cost. Many owners would consider taking their horse to a referral hospital for evaluation of colic, and with the excellent success in treatment of geriatric horses with colic,3 age should not be considered a negative factor in the decision to refer.
