The spills from lubricants, gasoline, diesel and by- products of used and spent engine oil constitute the major pollutants in auto mechanic villages in Nigeria. Its environmental pollution has beenpredominant through soil and groundwater contamination andalso poses a major anthropogenic threat. The studied heavy metals on contaminated soil showed that studies had focused on common metals of Cu, Cd, Pband Zn in the east and west regions, while trace metals were studied in the south and radioactive elements in the north. Statistical evaluation showed high occurrences of Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn in the four geo-political zones of Nigeria. The detrimental effects of auto-mechanic village activities were on humans and also disrupted growth and flowering of arable plants. The remediation application showed that soil type and contaminant characteristics play a major role in determining the type of remediation procedure to be applied.Hence,Nigeria should provide standard repairs and services to automobiles in-line with emerging technology and best environmental practices. -

The study identified most of all the known rivers in Imo State and provided information like relief, topography and other geographical features of the major rivers which are crucial to aid water management for a sustainable water infrastructure in the communities of the watershed. The rivers and lakes are classified into five watersheds (river basins) such as Okigwe watershed, Mbaise / Mbano watershed, Orlu watershed, Oguta watershed and finally, Owerri watershed. The knowledge of the river basins in Imo State will help analyze the problems involved in water resources allocation and to provide guidance for the planning and management of water resources in the state for sustainable development. American Journal of Geographic Information System 2016, 5(2): 55-67 DOI: 10.5923/j.ajgis.20160502.03 Erosion Sensitivity Assessment of Communities in Owerri, Nigeria Using Geographic Information System and Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation- Based Model Ngozi AC-Chukwuocha*, Ogbenna Uchechukwu, Ogugua Chizoba, Emenike Nnedinma Department of Environmental Technology, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria Abstract Soil erosion menace is a major environmental concern in South East Nigeria; that calls for quick measures to minimize the rate of devastation. These measures are sustainable if geospatial information on erosion sensitivity and degree of sensitivity is provided. This study identifies and integrates variables such as land use (derived from IKONOS 2012 Satellite Image), soil erodibity, rainfall erosivity, slope steepness (from Digital Terrain Model), level of imperviousness, drainage and population density to assess the degree of sensitivity in Owerri area of Nigeria to water erosion. The datasets were integrated into the GIS environment with the use of ArcGIS 10.3. The functions of weighted overlay were used to analyze the degrees of sensitivity of the entire study area to erosion hazards. The results showed that 57.56% of the study area mapped ranked medium sensitivity to erosion. With the built-up and forest land use accounting for 29.84% and 12.16%. Impervious surface analysis showed that 53.57% of the sub-watersheds had low level of imperviousness. While 46.43% of the study area had medium level of imperviousness (between 10%-25%). The study also revealed that Ohii with highest percentage sand (87.3%) and lowest percentage organic matter (0.635%) had the highest erodibility status. -

ABSTRACT Water quality assessment of Nwangele river was undertaken using standard methods. Water samples were drawn from upstream, midstream and downstream of the river and assessed for quality. Results obtained for physicochemical characteristics showed pH (4.83±.0.01-5.00±0.31), total solid (200.00±2.40-613.19±1.10 mg/L), and total suspended solid (49.98±0.11-399.04±2.09 mg/L). Heavy metals found in the river water were iron (0.132±0.01- 0.144±0.02 mg/L), zinc (0.034±0.02- 0.044±0.02 mg/L), mercury (0.004±0.001- 0.011±0.00 mg/L), lead (0.008±0.00- 0.016±0.00 mg/L) Received: November 12, 2018 and cadmium (0.03±0.01- 0.011±0.00 mg/L). Groundwater Prospect for Siting Productive Water

ABSTRAC T Transmissivity values were determined from pumping test and surface geoelectric sounding data in Okigwe geopolitical zone of Imo state, Nigeria. Eleven out of the fteen boreholes drilled in the area, which have drawdown values were used to determine the parameters. The Schlumberger electrode array with a maximum electrode spacing of 900m were used to carry out 120 vertical electrical soundings (VES) across the study area. Relating the geoelectric resistivity data to the borehole hydrogeological information for the area led to delineation of probable aquiferous zones. The aquifer thickness increases towards the southern part to a maximum value of 104m obtained at Amonze in Obowo Local Government Area. Using an average transmissivity of 1030.085m2/day determined from the pumping test data, a mean conductance value of 19.222m/day was obtained for the area. The transmissivity values vary from 992m2/day to 1038m2/day while the hydraulic conductivity values range from 9.885 to 115.965m/day. Based on the result of the study, and the diagnostic hydraulic and electrical conductivity product (k) values, zones of sites for productive boreholes were delineated. -

This paper therefore intends to review the ichthyofauna of the inland waters and Aquatic Environmental Management, University of Uyo, Uyo, of Akwa Ibom State, with a view to assessing the status of the fisheries. On a general note, Akwa Ibom Inland fishery is very economically viable; providing good quality protein for the populace through fish supplies as well as providing source of livelihood to several others through the value chain of the fisheries. Beyond inspecting the fish faunal composition of the landing sites, we also interacted with the fishers’ folk to understand the sources of conflicts. -

Resistance of Bacteria Isolated from Otamiri River to Heavy Metals and Some Selected Antibiotics

Onyemekara 1Department of Biotechnology, 2Department of Biology, 3Department of Microbiology, Federal University of Technology, P.M.B.1526, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria Abstract: This study is aimed at determining the resistance of bacteria to heavy metals and some antibiotics. The ability of aquatic bacteria isolates from Otamiri River at Ihiagwa in Owerri North, Imo State to tolerate or resist the presence of certain selected heavy metals: Pb+, Zn2+ and Fe2+ and some antibiotics was investigated. Identification tests for the bacteria isolates from Otamiri River revealed them to belong to the genera Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Escherichia, Micrococcus and Proteus species. The control experiment showed heavy growth of the organisms. These bacteria strains were checked for resistance against heavy metals by culturing them in basal medium in which varying concentrations of heavy metal compounds was incorporated. All the bacteria strains showed resistance against heavy metals with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 mg/L, respectively. Generally, all the organisms had low MIC values for Pb+ and high MIC value for Zn2+ and Fe2+. This indicates average and low toxicity respectively of the heavy metals to the organisms. On the other hand, the isolates also exhibited high tolerance to most of the antibiotics like Gentamycin (77.7%), Rifampicin (66.0%) and Oflaxacin (57.3%). -

Water samples were collected(fortnightly) from four sampling stations established along the river channel for 3 months.Physico-chemical parameters analyses were done using conventional field and standard laboratory techniques. Hydrogen ion concentration mean value of 5.106ppm was obtained. Dissolved Oxygen recorded a mean value of 4.608ppm, Alkalinity recorded a mean value of 103.917ppm, while Carbon (IV) Oxide recorded a mean value of 12.488ppm. Chloride recorded a mean value of 56.292ppm, Hardness recorded a mean value of 81.583ppm, and BOD recorded a mean value of 0. All these parameters differs significantly (p<0.05). Four taxa of benthic micro- invertebrate in two phyla: Mollusca and Arthropoda were identified.
