2009 -- S 0915 ======= LC02612 ======= STATE OF RHODE ISLAND IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2009 ____________ S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N WISHING BOSTON RED SOX ANNOUNCER AND FORMER PLAYER JERRY REMY A SPEEDY RECOVERY Introduced By: Senators Blais, Doyle, Maher, Bates, and Paiva-Weed Date Introduced: May 13, 2009 Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration 1 WHEREAS, Jerry Remy, born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1952, has been a member 2 of the Red Sox family and "Red Sox Nation" since December 8, 1977 when he was traded by the 3 California Angels to the Boston Red Sox. Jerry Remy played second base for the Red Sox for 4 seven years and was selected to play in the All-Star game in 1978. He retired from Major League 5 Baseball after the 1984 season, playing ten years in the Major Leagues; and 6 WHEREAS, Since 1988 Jerry has been a baseball announcer for the Boston Red Sox, but 7 his impact has become far more significant than the typical baseball broadcaster. He has, in many 8 ways, become the voice of the Boston Red Sox. His deep knowledge of the game and his 9 humorous, light approach to his broadcast duties have made him a beloved figure in New England 10 and throughout "Red Sox Nation." No announcer in baseball is more connected to the team he 11 covers and the region following that team than is Jerry Remy with the Boston Red Sox; and 12 WHEREAS, In November of 2008, it was discovered that Jerry Remy had lung cancer. 13 Thankfully, it was a small, low-grade tumor discovered at a very early stage. Remy had 14 successful surgery and required no additional treatments. Unfortunately, due to complications 15 post-surgery, Remy has been battling an infection and pneumonia, and these conditions have 16 made it necessary for Remy to temporarily step-aside from his broadcast duties. Remy has issued 17 a statement thanking the fan base for their overwhelming support, and urging young people to not 18 take up smoking and urging smokers to quit; now, therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations 1 expresses it wishes that Jerry Remy get well soon and return to his duties as a broadcaster for the 2 Boston Red Sox and the President of Red Sox Nation. We thank him for his sincere efforts to 3 convince people to not take up smoking or, if they do smoke, to quit; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to 5 transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jerry Remy. ======= LC02612 ======= 2 .
