Anzac Commemorative Book Bendigo Coucil, Bendigo RSL, and the Hindsight Club are encouraging residents to sign a commemorative book for presentation to the Papua New Guinea High Commission at this year’s Bomana War Cemetery Anzac Day Dawn Service. Bomana is located at the southern end of the Kokoda Trail, near Port Moresby, and is the largest war ceme- tery in the Pacific. It is the final resting place for 3779 soldiers, sailors and airmen, who fought in PNG and includes the graves of 3069 known and 237 unknown Australians. Bendigo Mayor Peter Cox said the book would be located at the Bendigo RSL Club in Havilah Road until early April and then be available to sign at the City’s offices in Heathcote for a week. “The book is designed to allow the Bendigo communi- ty to acknowledge this year’s Anzac Day centenary and our brave war heroes.” The idea for the book came from the Hindsight Club, a group of 19 local businessmen following in the foot- steps of our armed services and completing the 96 kilo- metre Kokoda Trail. Bendigo RSL President Cliff Richards said: “No element of war is easy but the fight by our servicemen on the Kokoda Trail was nothing short of remarkable considering the horrendous condi- tions. Lest We Forget all that has been done for us so we can enjoy the world in which we live.” Bridge Connection January 2015 Page 3 Private Robert Mactier Victoria Cross By Ross Mactier - second cousin twice removed land in 1872 and selected clearly see the position held land at Tatura, calling the by the ANZACS. property ‘Reitcam’ which is Monash’s plan was to attack Mactier spelt backwards! from a number of sides In 1878 he married Chris- rather than a full on frontal tiana Ross, daughter of an- assault. other pioneer Angus Ross, Prior to the advance of the the storekeeper in Tatura.

  • Annual Report: 2015-2016
ANNUAL REPORT of the PRESIDENT 2015-2016 INTRODUCTION The Chung Wah Society was established in 1946, a social and sporting club for Darwin's burgeoning Chinese population. Before the Society and prior to World War II, the two main groups serving the Chinese community were the Wah On Society (predecessors to the Chung Wah Society) and the Kuomintang (supporting the Nationalist Party in China). Today, the Chung Wah Society is a community-based, non-political organisation which has approx. 380 members and their families, the majority of whom reside in the Darwin area. The Society strives to achieve its aims and objectives through active participation within the wider community. Keen to encourage a broad based membership, the Society arranges and sponsors a number of events and activities including sporting, seniors, youth, cultural, fund-raising, historical and general social activities. Many of the committee and board members are descendants of the founding members back in 1946. We have had many participants enjoying holidays and out and about participating in community events, with some great stories to share later on in the newsletter. In the world of NDIS, as many of our participants move onto their second and for some third NDIS plans, we are seeing some overall improvement in the outcomes through planning. Unfortunately we are still kept busy following up for those where the planning process does not accurately capture needs and I plan to meet with the NDIS Australia on how that might work for you and your family on a more regular basis to ensure that we can raise these member with a disability.
