A Primer on Biblical Masculinity | BISHOP ROBERT BARRON. Today, we tackle a conversation we’ve never had on this podcast – biblical masculinity. As you men are well aware, Order of Man is a non- religious movement but that doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t look at all available paths to the type of men we have a desire to be. And, I can think of no better guest to have this type of conversation than Bishop Robert Barron, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. During our conversation, we talk about David as an example of biblical masculinity, individual sovereignty vs. God’s sovereignty, literal and figurative interpretations of the bible, Jesus Christ as a fighter, and choosing to live the commandments. Bishop Robert Barron. Gents, I’ve been looking forward to introducing my guest to you today. His name is Bishop Robert Barron. He currently serves as the auxiliary bishop to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. He’s been asked to speak at Facebook, Google, and Amazon on the subject of religion, discussed and debated with Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro, and serves as a religious correspondent for NBC, Fox News, and CNN. In addition, he reaches nearly 2,000,000 people on his social media accounts and over 350,000 people receive his daily email reflections. Obviously, the man is very influential and, during our discussion today, I think you’ll hear why. Show Highlights. The great narratives How David emerges Lessons of humility A willingness to engage Man’s capability to protect Engaging through non-violence After the resurrection Listening to the Lord The sovereignty of God Governing your family Discerning your mission Twelve-year-old Jesus Finding true power Clinging to worldly power The discipline of the gym Respect for your freedom Choosing your character Building a moral wall Legitimate self-care Biblical literacy. Ryan Michler is a husband, father, Iraq Combat Veteran, and the founder of Order of Man. Ryan was raised without a permanent father figure and has seen first-hand how a lack of strong, ambitious, self-sufficient men has negatively impacted society. He believes many of the world's most complicated and challenging problems could be resolved if men dedicated themselves to becoming more capable husbands, fathers, businessmen, and community leaders. It has now become his life's mission to help men across the planet step more fully into their roles as protectors, providers, and presiders over themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities. His podcast, Order of Man, has been downloaded over 20,000,000 times, he has a social media presence of over 500,000 men, and thousands of men have successfully completed his online and live workshops, courses, and events. You can learn more at his website, Order of Man. Bishop Robert Barron’s Sermons Transfiguration and Deification. The Transfiguration signals the purpose of religion. The first thing we notice is that Jesus’ appearance becomes more beautiful. Second, in his transfigured state, Jesus transcends space and time. Contemporary culture attempts to reduce all religion to ethics, but in Jesus’ transfiguration we see that the final purpose of our religious devotion is not that we become just nice people, but rather we become transfigured as sons and daughters of God. Good memoirs/ eyewitness accounts? This topic is currently marked as "dormant"—the last message is more than 90 days old. You can revive it by posting a reply. 1bartfun. What do you think are some good memoirs/diaries when it comes to military history? Doesn't really matter which period, from Xenophon's Anabasis tot the new stuff that's coming from Iraq. I'v read a lot of stuff on WW1 and WW2, but I'm not to familiair with other periods: Middle Ages, Religious Wars, American Wars etc. Suggestions would be highly appreciated. 2Ammianus. 3RobertMosher. Ulysses S. Grant's Personal Memoirs have been considered one of the best ever written in the United States. I certainly enjoyed reading them, though I thought he went a bit easy in his comments on some of his Union Army colleagues. Although not strictly memoirs, Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Through his Private Leters by Elizabeth Brown Pryor is an outstanding portrait of Robert E. Lee based upon the authors' study of almost all of Lee's surviving correspondence, including the collection found most recently in Alexandria, Virginia. Robert A. Luther College Goes to War, very recently compiled and edited by my former history professor Marvin Slind is a collection of letters sent from soldiers during WWII. However, it may not be entirely relevant unless you attended Luther College, as the letters were sent by former Luther College students to a LC publication called "Scuttlebutt". The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is a Vietnam era memoir, and if you're unfamiliar with his work it is somewhat similar to Hemingway's short, terse prose. 11jmnlman. 12LamSon. I am somewhat of a Vietnam War buff, so my suggestions will be from that conflict. 1. The Cat From Hue by John Laurence 2. A Cambodian odyssey by Haing Ngor 3. First They killed My Father by Loung Ung 4. Inside Television's First War: A Saigon Journal by Ron Steinman 5. Touched by the Dragon: Experiences of Vietnam Veterans from Newport County, Rhode Island by Frank L. Grzyb. 13Jasper. 14petroshowson. 15Tchernobog. Some decent German WW2 memoirs/accounts: Berlin Dance of Death - Helmut Altner (teenager fighting in the Battle of Berlin) Iron Coffins - Herbert A. Werner (submarine warfare) Sniper on the Eastern Front - Albrecht Wacker In Deadly Combat - Gottlob Biedermann. _With Our Backs to Berlin_ and _Death Was Our Companion_ by Tony Le Tissier are also worth picking up, they collect. 10 short first hand accounts each from people involved in the fighting in and around Berlin at the very end of the war, providing some interesting snapshots of the battle. 16Ammianus. 17Shrike58. 18Ammianus. 19Belisaurus. 20Ammianus. #19..thanks for the hot skinny Belisaurus; sounds fascinating! 21DVanderlinde. 22JimThomson. 23usnmm2. Here are a few that I have enjoyed. For WWI ; Fix Bayonets by John W. Thompson and Over the Top by Empey, Arthur Guy. For Korean War ; The Four Deuces by C. S. Crawford. WW2 ; The Good War by Studs Terkel and Into the Valley by John Hersey. 24GreyGhost. 25usnmm2. 26JimThomson. Here is one that stands out from most; SIX SILENT MEN-101st LRP/Rangers Book Three by Gary A. Linderer. It is about the Long Range Patrol teams that infiltrated NVA territory in South Vietnam and reported the locations of enemy camps, hospitals, supply caches, truck parks and large units in place or in movement. The NVA hated and feared these teams and made extreme efforts to find and destroy them. Very well written and enjoyable. Recommended! On another topic, it was interesting to read about how the U.S. had difficulty finding NVA units after a B-52 strike, until someone thought about their own SOP. Then someone suggested hitting the same spot with another B-52 strike two days after the first one. It was done and wiped out an entire NVA battalion. Sweet. 27LamSon. A Patch of Ground by Michael Archer is about the authors experiences at Khe Sanh during the Tet Offensive. A very good account.
