You will find information about our faculty, new facility, and under Education, about our fellowship program in Pediatric Ophthalmology which complies with guidelines set forth by the Fellowship Compliance Committee of the AUPO and by the AAPO&S. This 12-month fellowship is approved for one person and takes place primarily (at least 50% of his/her time) at The Children’s Hospital (TCH) with less intense experiences at Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC), the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), and the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH). Program Description Our program is the original Pediatric Ophthalmology training program, created by Dr. Marshall Parks after his work with the first ophthalmologist who dedicated his practice to children, Dr. Frank Costenbader, here in Washington, DC. We strive every day to continue their esteemed legacy of both outstanding patient care and the education of the next generation of pediatric ophthalmology leaders. Our fellows find that having three fellows working together constitutes a critical mass that provides for a wonderful mix of camaraderie and professional interaction, further enhancing their education as well as their overall experience. Each year, we offer three fellowship positions. Two positions are offered to US/Canadian graduates, and one is preferably offered to a qualified international candidate, committed to raising the standard of eye care for children in his or her home country. Washington, D.C is an exciting community in which to live and work, with many cultural and recreational opportunities. It is also an area rich with ophthalmic educational opportunities, which we incorporate into your fellowship experience. Besides the monthly Division of Ophthalmology Grand Rounds at Children's National, you will also attend both the monthly Walter Reed Pediatric Ophthalmology Conference, which has patients referred from around the world for evaluation and treatment, and the combined George Washington University/Uniformed Services University monthly Grand Rounds. The National Eye Institute, with their world class Uveitis and Genetics services, is available to us for consultation, meetings, and coordinated care of patients. Journal Clubs take advantage of internationally known guest speakers, who practice in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and throughout the country. Fellows participate in genetics, cornea, retina and plastics clinics that are run by fellowship-trained, nationally recognized experts in these fields. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to participate in our annual spring humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic. As a graduate of the Children's National Fellowship, you will be eligible for membership in the Costenbader Society and will be able to attend the annual meeting as a fellow. This is an opportunity, in a less formal setting, to meet and discuss cases with today’s leaders in pediatric ophthalmology. Costenbader Society membership is a unique opportunity treasured by former fellows, as part of the Parks and Costenbader legacy. In addition, you will attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), the Wills Pediatric Ophthalmology Day in Philadelphia, and a Board Review Course if desired. The Costenbader Society also makes available two unique educational experiences for our Fellows. Each year internationally recognized specialists visit our program as the Angeline Parks Visiting Professor and as the Distinguished Alumni Visiting Professor. These are excellent opportunities to spend two days (including a small private dinner) with leading figures in our profession. It is our goal to provide you a busy, rewarding year in which you will experience tremendous growth and satisfaction and that will leave you confident and prepared to handle all facets of ophthalmic care affecting children. Applicants are asked to submit a photograph. Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Programs 2018-2019

Program Description Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus We strive to maintain the same enjoyable atmosphere in the fellowship that we experienced ourselves during a most productive time of our own careers. One-on-one contact with faculty - learning, operating, and teaching in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus – takes place within a full service ophthalmology department. The Wilmer Institute is directly connected to the Johns Hopkins Hospital [JHH] including the newly opened Charlotte Bloomberg Children’s Hospital at JHH. We offer 1 or 2, full-time, one-year fellowship positions in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at The Krieger Children’s Eye Center at the Wilmer Institute. We have trained over 50 fellows since 1979 from United States and abroad. They have come from a wide cross-section of residency programs, and a few have come from private practice to start a new career. About 40% are in private practice, with the other 60% in academic positions, including four full professors and five department chairs. With 4 full-time clinical faculty in our Center, 2 full-time Ph.D. investigators, and 3 orthoptists, we provide well-rounded exposure to both the clinical and academic sides of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Dr. David Guyton, our Division Director from 1978 - 2011 and current fellowship director, has primary interests in strabismus, ophthalmic optics, and ophthalmic instrumentation (currently vision screening devices). Dr. Michael Repka, current Division Director, and with the Division since 1985, has broad interests in pediatric ophthalmology, clinical trials, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, as well as in strabismus, cataract, and retinopathy of prematurity. Dr. Hee-Jung Park joined our Center in 2009, following her fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Anya Trumler joined our faculty in 2011 with an interest in pediatric glaucoma. Time spent with Dr. Guyton will be mostly in strabismus, with a mix of pediatric and adult cases. The adult strabismus cases, comprising two-thirds of Dr. Guyton’s practice, provide the fellow a unique opportunity to become familiar with more advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities in strabismus. Adult strabismus is more surgically oriented than pediatric ophthalmology, because of the fewer visits needed to manage amblyopia. Exposure to adult strabismus cases allows the fellow to become comfortable and familiar with surgical techniques needed for re-operations, as well as crucial diagnostic techniques when diplopia is present, such as the Lancaster red-green test. More subtle problems not always easily appreciated in children, such as those of torsional and vertical strabismus, are magnified in adults, and mastery of management techniques in such situations allows for optimal treatment to be applied to all age groups. Time spent with Dr. Repka will provide exposure to retinopathy of prematurity, pediatric neuro- ophthalmology, and other areas of pediatric ophthalmology including a large proportion of pediatric strabismus, ROP, and cataract. Time spent with Drs. Park and Trumler will be a blend of the experiences with Drs. Guyton and Repka. The fellow is involved in 5 to 8 surgical cases each week, taking the surgeon’s role in about half of these. There is good experience in a wide variety of strabismus surgery, with heavy exposure to hang-back surgery, cyclovertical surgery, and adjustable sutures in both children and adults. In addition, experience is gained in congenital cataract surgery, nasolacrimal disorders, ROP screening and treatment and pediatric glaucoma. We are privileged to have our pediatric and adult facilities combined in a unified modern child-friendly Center providing excellent exposure to the wide variety of pediatric eye diseases as well as strabismus in adults. Consults are seen with the faculty throughout the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Programs 2018-2019
