The example of individuals or whole groups of believers living a life detached from the world and conse- crated to God has always been an important element in the shaping and trans- mission of Christian religiosity.The history of the Christian Church has been influenced to a considerable extent by monks, monasteries, and monastic orders.The significance of such movements, defined by pious withdrawal from the world, in some epochs such the Middle Ages remains plainly visible today—in the churches and monasteries that still characterize our cities and landscapes.     65 THE RULE OF ST. BENEDICT AND MODERN LIBERAL AUTHORITY LINDA ZAGZEBSKI University of Oklahoma Abstract. In this paper I examine the sixth century Rule of St. Benedict, and argue that the authority structure of Benedictine communities as described in that document satisfi es well-known principles of authority defended by Joseph Raz. Th is should lead us to doubt the common assumption that pre-modern models of authority violate the modern ideal of the autonomy of the self. I suggest that what distinguishes modern liberal authority from Benedictine authority is not the principles that justify it, but rather the fi rst order beliefs for the sake of which authority is sought by the individual, and the degree of trust between the authority and the subject. I. INTRODUCTION One of the ideas embraced by the West during the Enlightenment was the idea that the only authority that needs no justifi cation is the authority of the self over the self. Any other kind of authority is derivative. Phi- losophers recognized that we cannot live without political authority, so an important project of the early Enlightenment was to show that the au- thority of the state can ultimately be justifi ed by the authority of the self. Other kinds of authority were permitted to disappear, particularly moral and religious authority, both of which are still commonly dismissed as incompatible with personal autonomy. My purpose in this paper is not to critique modern ideas of autonomy or the self. Instead, I want to re- examine the common assumption that pre-modern models of authority violate the modern ideal of the ultimate authority of the self.

    Ambiguous Legitimation: Grassroots Roman Catholic Communities in Italy and Ecclesiastical Hierarchies STEFANIA PALMISANO University of Torino Abstract The article deals with the complex and multifaceted relationships arising between the ecclesiastical hierarchy and grassroots Roman Catholic communities, the so-called New Catholic Communities (NCCs), founded in Italy in the wake of the Second Vatican Council and variously inspired by it. Two issues of particular importance in the sociological literature are addressed. The first concerns the criteria with which to construct a typology which can embrace the extreme variety of NCCs in existence today. Adapting a classic distinction drawn by Weber, the paper introduces and discusses a model which distinguishes among communities according to the twofold criteria of ascetic vs. mystical and this-worldly vs. other-worldly. The second issue concerns the recognition that the NCCs are able to obtain from the Catholic Church. It is argued that the negotiations entailed by such recognition are often rendered lengthy and tortuous, both by the controversial nature of the institutional, organizational and liturgical innovations adopted by the Communities and by the existence within the Church of several sources of legitimating authority. Torn between the duty to disavow excessively radical innovations and the desire to prevent open conflict, the ecclesiastical bureaucracy often resorts to forms of ambiguous legitimation, where it is not clear whether the Church’s silence amounts to tacit condemnation or tacit approval of the new communities. The paper concludes by exploring the advan- tages that the NCCs can bring to the Church, and the consequent reasons that induce the relevant authority to abandon its proverbial prudence and grant rapid recognition.

While their various ideas were broad and not well defined, at their heart was that Germany should embrace a liberal, commercial model of empire: a “German Hong Kong” that would be a paradigm of colonial rule and a major power center in Asia. There exists a critical need to place Germany’s colonial experience in China in its proper historical context and appreciate its role in German imperialism and the development of a more globalized world at the turn of the twentieth century. This study critically analyzes the colony of Tsingtau in order to elucidate German ideas about empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The 3500 Germans in Tsingtau and their supporters created a nexus of associations to build a commercial center to rival British Hong Kong. Inspired by new historical trends, this work examines mid-level state and military officials, diplomats, businessmen, and religious leaders, the “middle management of empire,” that helped develop Tsingtau.

Introduction Since the Vatican II, the lay people have been the focus in the life and mission of the Church. We, the Divine Word Missionaries promoting lay collaboration from the very beginning of our Society by empowering the lay partners in our missionary ventures. The same spirit echoes in the subsequent General Chapters. This concern has become very urgent and essential in today’s world due to many socio-economic and cultural reasons. This short reflective article highlights the importance of Lay partnership in mission for the worldwide mission of the Society of the Divine Word. 2. The Importance of Lay Missionaries in the History of the Society a) St. Arnold and the first co- workers at Steyl After the purchase of the first house at Steyl on 16 June 1875, Arnold was happy to have a competent carpenter, Heinrich Erlemann who wanted to become a missionary priest. Many lay men and women from Steyl, Tegelen, Venlo and from nearby Germany helped the new mission house from its beginning. Miss Helen Wolters, the Cleophas siblings, Joseph Stute and Anton Craghs were committed lay persons at the service of the Society. Joseph Statute, as a young man came from Germany to Steyl from January 1876 until 1882; he established and managed the first printing press in Steyl. b) The Cleophas family: The Cleophas family from Steyl helped the new mission house in many ways. During the opening Mass of the Mission House on September 8, 1875 in the Steyl Parish Church, Mr Cleophas played the organ and conducted the choir.
