Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. I played the game in Elementary and Secondary School, and represented The Leeward Islands’ Teachers’ Training College on its cricket team in contests against various clubs from 1964 to 1966. My playing days ended after I moved away from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where I represented Ridley Cricket Club against teams as distant as 100 miles away. The faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington has been a source of inspiration to me during my tenure there. Alusine Jalloh, my Dissertation Committee Chairman, challenged me to look beyond my pre-set Master’s Degree horizon during our initial conversation in 2000. Five-day Tests were the only vehicle for competition - one-day play was not yet even a figment of commercial imagination. There was no television in Australia, radio and newspapers providing the only media coverage. Overseas teams toured in every second season, on average, with interest focused on the Sheffield Shield competition in between times. Thus opportunities for seeing leading overseas players in action were limited. England and Australia ruled unchallenged as the leading Test nations and series between the two, for the right to hold the mythical Ashes, were regarded as the ultimate contest. Fixtures with the other Test-playing nations of the day - South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan - were considered of secondary importance and they were granted only occasional tours. Apart from England (three series), only West Indies and South Africa (one series each) played Tests in Australia during the 1950s.

It has been an interesting challenge and a pleasant occupation. If I had been a different sort of writer the number of words written in this form might have pro- duced, say, 10 good novels. More than one friend has told me my time would have been better spent that way. I have made a small selection of 100 columns from those I have written over the years. A special concern has run through these pieces. I have wanted to place the joys and cares, the sorrows and delights, of Guyanese in a wider context than Guyana. In Guyana I think we stifle our lives too much in local worries. Guyana, for instance, is caught in the same trap as scores of other poor and vulnerable countries. Struggling in this trap, we are certainly not uniquely wounded. We should try to see ourselves in a universal context. It has hap- pened before, and it will happen again, that men suffer from the pains of maladministration and the frustrations of bu- reaucracy. It is true elsewhere and in other times that people lie and cheat and scavenge for money and that others are brave and open-hearted and talented.
