CONFERENCE 2021 CONFERENCE Program Guide Tampa, FL • September 9-12, 2021 1 Welcome to Tampa! We are so excited to have you here at the conference! We know that many people have strong feelings about masks and COVID in general. As an organization, we’re trying to make the best of a tumultuous situation. We were obviously hoping that the early summer circumstances were going to hold and that we would be able to host a “normal” conference with minimal COVID precautions. Unfortunately, because our host location has a very high level of community spread and the CDC recommends taking additional precautions because of the epidemiology of the Delta variant, we have decided to require masking and to follow their recommendations for distancing, etc. This is both to protect the organization as well as to do everything we possibly can to minimize the impact of a COVID related disruption in the already- stressful lives of each of our members. We truly want the conference to be as welcoming as possible to all of our attendees, including those with isolation and quarantine requirements when returning home, those with children unable to get vaccinated, and those with (and caring for loved ones with) underlying health conditions. For all of those reasons, masks will be required at our event and we ask sincerely that you comply with that requirement. We have scheduled as much open networking and free time into our schedule as possible so that smaller groups that would like to meet outside or off-site can do so without having to worry about the mask requirement. 2 Veterinary HospiceWhat I don’t What I LOVE answering the phone scheduling providing compassion!! appointments & marketing ending suffering advertising making a difference dealing with lawyers & accountants handling complaints doing profound work fostering the human-animal bond Imagine doing the part of your job that you love... and nothing you don’t. What an exciting time and we are sooo glad you are here! When the conference theme of Back to the Future hit me, I literally shouted “Great Scott!” It made such sense to me as we truly are coming off a crazy year, and it IS time to get Back to the Future! Remember Doc telling Marty “when this thing hits 88 MPH, “stuff” is going to happen!” ell,W we have hit 88 MPH plus! It’s happening and it’s exciting! It has been such an honor to be your president this year, and I can assure you we have not just been cruising along. We hit 88+ MPH, we engaged our flux capacitors, and surely where we are going there are no roads. We rose to the occasion last year when loving pet parents needed more for their pet’s final experience. We pivoted to be THE light to so many more when they needed us. We rose to the occasion, and we rocked it. I, too, think of conference like Dr. Karin Christopher, your 2021 conference chair. THIS is your New Year. The time to freshen up your business, to tidy up your skills, to get yourself ready for what’s coming next. And with this conference, we have brought it: Our keynote address by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, one of the premier organizations in the country whose hallmark is fully around the human-animal bond; • Over 40 hours of presentations; • Continuing education opportunities; • Top sponsorship from two outstanding companies in our profession: Lap of Love and Caring Pathways; • Over 20 Sponsor Partners who have come to show their support of us and our association; • A beautiful review of Ross Taylor’s production The Hardest Day; • Business Incubator to freshen up those business skills; • Euthanasia lab to elevate your medical knowledge of this procedure; • And, so much more. And one more important thing! Delivering the tender services we deliver back home, it is so important to take care of ourselves in the process. Most of us are amazing at helping others but when it comes to taking care of ourselves... well, that is another story. So we are purposely delivering this great educational content to you, our wonderful members, in a locale where you can’t help but soak up some self care...just by opening your eyes, taking a deep breath and being present! We truly have brought it! We truly are blazing a trail, which is why there are no roads where we are going! WE are creating them.
