Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper Selwyn College Submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy University of Cambridge April 1998 Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper, Selwyn College Cambridge, April 1998 Joy is a recurrent theme in the Church Dogmatics of Karl Barth but it is one which is under-explored. In order to ascertain reasons for this lack, the work of six scholars is explored with regard to the theme of joy, employing the useful though limited “motifs” suggested by Hunsinger. That the revelation of God has a trinitarian framework, as demonstrated by Barth in CD I, and that God as Trinity is joyful, helps to explain Barth’s understanding of theology as a “joyful science”. By close attention to Barth’s treatment of the perfections of God (CD II.1), the link which Barth makes with glory and eternity is explored, noting the far-reaching sweep which joy is allowed by contrast with the related theme of beauty. Divine joy is discerned as the response to glory in the inner life of the Trinity, and as such is the quality of God being truly Godself. Joy is seen to be “more than a perfection” and is basic to God’s self-revelation and human response. A dialogue with Jonathan Edwards challenges Barth’s restricted use of beauty in his theology, and highlights the innovation Barth makes by including election in his doctrine of God. In the context of Barth’s anthropology, paying close attention to his treatment of “being in encounter” (CD III.2), there is an examination of the significance of gladness as the response to divine glory in the life of humanity, and as the crowning of full and free humanness. -

Unattractive Leah Genesis 29: 16-35 I was having originally some difficulty coming up with a title for my sermon. I titled the first draft ‘Ugly Leah,’ but, I decided against it. To me and to many, ‘ugly’ is simply an ugly word. And we are not sure about Leah’s appearance. She is called ‘weak eyed in scripture. We only know she was contrasted to her beautiful sister Rachel. The Hebrew word translated ‘weak-eyed’ ‘rak,’ means ‘weak’ or ‘dull.’ So a girl who is called ‘dull- eyed’ is probably not accepting that as much of a complement. As I was contemplating my title, I did think of the television show that just got cancelled called “Ugly Betty.” The plot consists of the main character, Betty Suarez, a very plain girl lacking fashion sense who is thrust into a different world when she lands a position with a major, trendy high fashion magazine. Some of her co-workers endeavor to constantly humiliate her because of her lackluster appearance. However, through persistence, and a loyal spirit, she gains friends in the company and is a key instrument in moving the magazine and certain co-workers forward. Even the Leah’s and the Betty’s of the world can make a big difference. But in the end I settled on my present title, because obviously Leah did not measure up to the external attributes of sister Rachael. But as we will see, despite setbacks and unfulfilled hopes, she kept her faith in God. Leah serves as an example of one who remains faithful even when the chips are down. -

The Sign of Peace the Mass in Slow Motion
The Mass In Slow Motion Volume 22 The Sign of Peace The Mass In Slow Motion is a series on the Mass explaining the meaning and history of what we do each Sunday. This series of flyers is an attempt to add insight and understanding to our celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. This series will follow the Mass in order beginning with The Gathering Rite through The Final Blessing and Dismissal, approximately 25 volumes. Previous editions are available via the rectory office or our website: www.hcscchurch.org. The Rite of Peace follows the “Our Father” and the prayer “Lord Jesus Christ you said to your Apostles, „I leave you peace…‟, by which the Church asks for peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express to each other their ecclesial communion and mutual charity before communicating in the Sacrament. The manner of expressing this sign of peace is established by Conferences of Bishops in accordance with the culture and customs of the peoples. It is, however, appropriate that each person offer the sign of peace only to those who are nearest and in a sober manner. (cf G.I.R.M. # 82) Other instructions in the Missal indicate that exchange of peace is shared “if appropriate” and that the celebrant “gives the sign of peace to a deacon or minister.” The instruction adds that the priest may give the sign of peace to the ministers but always remains within the sanctuary, so as not to disturb the celebration. Diocesan Norms for Celebration of Mass As of Advent 2014 the liturgical practices specified herein, consonant with The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, will be normative for the following aspects of the celebration of Mass throughout the Diocese of Baker: 1. the order and manner of liturgical processions 2. chalices for the Communion of the faithful filled before Mass 3. ringing of bells at the Consecration only 4. Communion under both species at all Masses, Sunday and daily 5. Communion from Hosts consecrated at the same Mass, not from Hosts in the Tabernacle 6. announcements made after the closing prayer, not before 7. no additional prayers after the final blessing and dismissal of the people. Manner of procession If incense is used, the celebrant puts incense in the thurible in the vestibule, before the procession commences, and does not add more when he reaches the altar. Rather, after kissing the altar, he immediately takes the thurible from the deacon, who has received it from the thurifer, and begins to incense the altar. If no deacon is present, the thurifer hands the thurible directly to the celebrant. The Lectionary is never carried in procession—only the Gospel Book. -
James Chapter 2
James Chapter 2 Verses 1-13: James begins this passage on partiality with an exhortation (verse 1), then a brief illustration (verses 2-4). Most of this discussion is an argument against partiality (verses 5-13). First, partiality shows inconsistency in one’s conduct: Those we spurn are the ones God has chosen (verse 5), and shows inconsistency in one’s conduct: those we favor are the godless whom God rejects (verses 6-7). Second, partiality is more than an error in judgment; it is an act of sin. The one who shows respect of persons is a transgressor of the law. The law is like a ring or hedge encircling those within. When one breaks this ring, he stands outside (verse 10), becoming a transgressor, whether he commits adultery, murder, or shows partiality. Third, James argues that partiality provokes God’s judgment (verses 12-13). James 2:1 "My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons." “The faith”: This refers not to the act of believing, but to the entire Christian faith (Jude 3), which has as its central focus Jesus Christ. “Our Lord Jesus Christ”: Christ is the one who reveals the glory of God (John 1:14; 2 Cor. 4:4-6; Heb. 1:1-3). In His incarnation, He showed only impartiality (Matt. 22:16). For example, consider the non-elite people included in His genealogy, His choice of the humble village of Nazareth as His residence for 30 years, and His willingness to minister in Galilee and Samaria, both regions held in contempt by Israel’s leaders. -

1 James 2:1-13, No. 7 November 29, 2015 The Rev. Dr. Robert S. Rayburn We begin a new section of James with another of his more than 50 imperatives that punctuate his short letter. Now the subject is partiality, treating people differently depending on their social class or wealth. We call this “respect of persons” or “favoritism.” [Motyer, 80] James has just written about how true religion demonstrates itself in care for widows and orphans. Perhaps that thought prompted him to write the next section, though widows and orphans are not mentioned and are not specifically the poor James now writes about. Text Comment v.1 Jesus is mentioned only twice in the letter, but honor is certainly paid to him with the title James bestows on his elder brother, “the Lord of glory,” a title we find elsewhere in the New Testament, for example in 1 Cor. 2:8. It can be understood in different ways but it definitely contributes to the NT witness to the deity of Jesus Christ. v.4 I’ll return to this shortly, but don’t imagine that this is some kind of exaggeration on James’ part. Precisely this kind of public distinction between the rich and the poor was a commonplace of life in those days and in saying this James was requiring his Christian readers to break ranks with their culture in a way likely to bring real offense. But to behave as if such distinctions of class and wealth mattered was to abandon the gospel ground and set one’s feet firmly back in the world. -
