A Multi-Level Legitimacy Analysis of the World Anti-Doping Agency
A Multi-Level Legitimacy Analysis of the World Anti-Doping Agency Read, Daniel Jonathan1, Skinner, James1; Lock, Daniel2 and Houlihan, Barrie1 1: Loughborough University, United Kingdom; 2: Bournemouth University, United Kingdom [email protected] Aim The effectiveness of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as an international non- governmental organisation purposed to create and regulate anti-doping policy has been challenged by continued doping scandals in sport. Based on WADA’s response to the exposure of state sponsored doping in Russia, the purpose of this paper is to use multi-level legitimacy theory to understand reactive policy making in anti-doping. Theoretical Background and Literature Review Multi-level legitimacy theory (Bitektine & Haack, 2015) suggests that organisations conform to institutional pressures not necessarily because they agree with them, but because they can either profit from conforming or avoid reputational damage from challenging the dominant consensus. The result is that organisations true beliefs about the legitimacy of an institution may be suppressed until an event occurs which presents an opportunity to express views that challenge the status quo. Research suggests that anti-doping policy creation has been reactively prioritised after key events (Brissonneau & Ohl, 2010; Ritchie & Jackson, 2014). It is recognised that in the creation of WADA as an institution, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lost their monopoly over anti-doping policy in sport due to government intervention after the Festina scandal (Hanstad, Smith & Waddington, 2008). It is argued that following the creation of WADA, organisations conformed to avoid reputational damage because failure to do so would signify to stakeholders that they were not concerned about doping in sport. -

This paradigm shift gained momentum with the introduction of Web 2.00 tools and social media applications and the increased tendency in education and workplace towards more technology-driven practices and solutions. The current study reports on an experimental treatment to employ Tweetstorming in writing classes of tertiary students and studying the impact on their ideational fluency and syntactic complexity. Participants were EFL tertiary students enrolled in Writing I course of the English Study program of Abu Dhabi University. Results of the study indicate that using Tweetstorming in the writing classes of tertiary EFL students brought about significant gains in their ideational fluency and syntactic complexity. You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme. -

A Little Birdie Told Me About Agriculture: Best Practices and Future Uses of Twitter in Agriculutral Communications Abstract Social media sites, such as Twitter, are impacting the ways businesses, organizations, and individuals use technology to connect with their audiences. Twitter enables users to connect with others through 140-character messages called “tweets” that answer the question, “What’s happening?” Twitter use has increased exponentially to more than five million active users but has a dropout rate of more than 50%. Numerous agricultural organizations have embraced the use of Twitter to promote their products and agriculture as a whole and to interact with audiences in a new way. -

Sharing the Invictus Spirit -13 May 2020 Executive Summary On
Invictus Games Foundation Conversation Webinar: Sharing the Invictus Spirit -13 May 2020 Executive Summary On Wednesday, 13 May 2020 the Invictus Games Foundation conducted an inaugural webinar in its Conversation series entitled ‘Sharing the Invictus Spirit’. Originally this event was planned to be held immediately prior to the start of the Invictus Games The Hague during the period 9-16 May 2020 which had to be postponed and rescheduled to take place in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the event was switched to be online in the format of a webinar. In part, the intent was to mark the period when the Invictus Games would have taken place in May 2020 and to recognise the firm commitment of the competitors and their family and friends and, in part, it was designed to maintain the momentum until the rescheduled Invictus Games in The Hague in 2021. The Invictus Games Foundation is indebted to the invaluable support provided by Ascot Rehab, the Fisher House Foundation and ISPS Handa in enabling the Conversation. It is also delighted that the webinar was attended by circa 275 people drawn from across the international community including the 20 Participating Nations of the Invictus Games. The aim of the IGF Conversation was to address, across an international audience, relevant issues in the recovery and rehabilitation of Wounded, Injured and sick (WIS) Service personnel and veterans in order to share best practice and assist in building an enduring, future impact from the continuing evolution of the Invictus Games. The key themes of the Invictus Games Foundation Conversation were: 1.
