Starting a Small Business 1 of 6 Find Your Inspiration Create your own service department: You don't need a billion-dollar idea—like sneakers with wheels—to start a company. The Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that 55 percent of women business owners are in a service profession, like interior decorator, personal chef, or art buyer. These industries are appealing, says Linda Pinson, coauthor of Steps to Small Business Start-Up, "because you don't need a lot of start-up cash and your customers pay right away." Test-drive your idea: If you want to open a jewelry store, says Victoria Colligan, a founder of Ladies Who Launch, "make a necklace. It costs very little to do that." One choker may be fun but tying 500 knots by hand at 3 a.m. would require a Zoloft prescription. "It's okay to hate your idea," says Beth Schoenfeldt, cofounder of Ladies Who Launch. "It means you've ruled something out." Apprentice yourself: For dreams that can't be tried out on a small scale, you might investigate a VocationVacation, which matches you with someone who's happy to help you determine if you, too, are meant to be an alpaca farmer or coffeehouse owner (starting at $549). Volunteering is another option—and free. If you think you want to be an event planner, for instance, help organize your local March of Dimes Walk. (Volunteermatch.org lists opportunities by zip code.) It's all in the details. » From Your Great Idea, Whose Time Has Come in the September 2007 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. Subscribe now! Starting a Small Business 2 of 6 Identify the Next Steps Do your homework: "With the Web, no one has an excuse for not doing research," says Mary Cantando, author of The Woman's Advantage. "If you're starting a service, like a doggy day care, do an Internet search in your zip code. If there's competition, leave your dog at one of the places and see what it's not offering." Develop a prototype: Shapelock.com sells 10- and 20-ounce jars of plastic pellets that you can heat in the microwave and form into the shape of a gadget. If your first try doesn't pan out, put it back in the microwave. For more complicated designs, look for a machinist in the Yellow Pages, says Tamara Monosoff, author of Secrets of Millionaire Moms, who's sold thousands of her invention, TP Saver, which holds toilet paper in place so toddlers can't pull the roll off the rack. She also suggests logging on to thomas.net, where you enter the materials you need for your product and it provides a list of factories that work with those components. Find a workspace: Incubators let you rent space and equipment, from fax machines to industrial mixers, at a low cost. They usually require tenants to attend mentoring sessions, says Dinah Adkins, president of the National Business Incubation Association, "so, if you don't like to take advice, then an incubator is not a place for you." (To find one, go to nbia.org.) Consider the what-ifs. » From Your Great Idea, Whose Time Has Come in the September 2007 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. Subscribe now! Starting a Small Business 3 of 6 Create an A-1 Business Plan Writing a business plan will force you to consider the what-ifs (what if you get sick, need a trademark, need worker's comp insurance) and the tiny costs that you might overlook: "Like the cost of a cup of coffee—the cup, the java jacket, the lid, the napkin, the stirrer, the sugar," says Liat Cohen, co-owner of Cocoa Bar in Brooklyn. "A business plan forced me to figure out exactly what I would have to charge to make money." Get professional help: Two groups operating under the umbrella of the Small Business Administration can provide guidance. The Women's Business Center program (sba.gov/womeninbusiness) provides training and counseling, usually at very low fees (or free). For example, the Central Alabama Women's Business Center offers a course, Writing Your Business Plan: Your Business Roadmap, for $15. SCORE (score.org) is a network of working and retired executives who freely share their expertise. They try to match their members' specialties with the needs of a new entrepreneur—like pairing an artist who wanted to open her own gallery with a finance executive. If you can't get to a SCORE chapter, one of their members will work with you via e-mail. Review the plan: "A few months down the road, compare what actually happened to what you projected," says Pinson. Use this time to modify your forecasts and tweak your strategy. Bush and Gore on Oprah Winfrey, or the “Oprah-fication”1 of American Presidential Candidates by John Kares Smith, Ph.D. Professor of Communication Studies State University of New York Oswego, New York 13126 [email protected] “Let’s begin here,” Joshua Gamson begins his book, “talk shows are bad for you, so bad you could catch a cold. Turn them off, a women’s magazine suggested in 1995, and turn on Mother Teresa, since watching her ‘caring feelings’ radiate from the screen, according to psychologist Dr. David McClelland of Harvard, has been shown to raise the level of an antibody that fights colds. ‘It stands to reason,’ reasons a First magazine writer, ‘that viewing threatening, confrontational images could create an opposite reaction.’ In fact, given that talks shows ‘create feelings of frustration’ and fear, ‘shattering our trust and faith’ in our expectations of people’s behavior, and ‘give us a false perception of reality,’ it is perhaps best to watch game shows or soaps while nursing that cold. Watching daytime talk shows could conceivably send you into a decline into pathologies of all sorts: scared, angry, disgusted, convinced you are abnormal for not fitting in with the ‘cast of misfits and perverts,’ susceptible to both perversion and more colds [Gamson, p. 3]. There are many negative critics of talk shows. Gamson trots out the usual suspects: George Gerbner [“These shows are virtually destroying the goodness of America”], Harvard’s Alvin Pouissant [“It does not bode well for the future generations of young people growing up on a steady diet of this drivel”] TV Critic Tom Shales [“These shows are portraying Americans as shallow monsters”] [Gamson, 3].Gamson defends talkshows.

  • Brainy Quote ~ Oprah Winfrey 007
Brainy Quote ~ Oprah Winfrey 007 “Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.” Seperti yang diutarakan Oprah Winfrey, seorang pilantropist, produser, aktris, dan host talk show terkenal lewat ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, berkebangsaan Amerika, lahir pada tahun 1954 (berusia 64 tahun saat ini), melalui quote-nya, ’Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.’

  • A Framing Analysis of the Spiritual Views of Oprah Winfrey
Viewing the World through Oprah’s Eyes: A Framing Analysis of the Spiritual Views of Oprah Winfrey ________________________ Presented to the Faculty Liberty University School of Communication ___________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Master of Arts in Communication By Marianne Jeanette Crosby May, 1 2009 __________________________________________________ Cecil V. Kramer, Jr., D. Min., Chairman Date __________________________________________________ William Mullen, Ph.D. Date _________________________________________________ Randall Pruitt, Ph.D. Date Copyright @ 2009 Marianne Jeanette Crosby All Rights Reserved Abstract Oprah Winfrey is an American icon. She has a hand in almost every form of media: movies, television, books, Internet, and radio. In her rise to success, another place that she has infiltrated is the church. Because of her wide range of influence, her thoughts and teaching on spirituality have made their way into both the home and church. Over ten years ago, talk shows had a reputation for portraying mainly negative topics. To combat this stereotype, she made a push to encourage more positive topics of discussion on her show. Yet after receiving criticism for “preaching,” she withdrew from spiritually natured shows. However, in the last couple of years, her shows have again seen more focus on spirituality. While Winfrey has been both praised and criticized for these spiritual views, there has not been much written about what these views actually are. There has also been virtually no study to compare her views of ten years ago to the more recent views. Therefore, this thesis uses Erving Goffman’s framing analysis to extract the frames she presents on spirituality on her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.

  • Introduction
Introduction What is Oprah? A noun. A name. A misspelling. Oprah is a person we know because of her publicity, a pioneer we recognize because of her accolades, and a personage we respect because of her embodied endur- ance, her passionate care, her industrious production. First and fore- most, though, Oprah is a woman. An African American woman with a story broadcast by her own engines, with ideas inspired by her unceas- ing consumption, and with a self magnified by the media mechanics that make tabloid her every gesture. Before that broadcast, before that spectacle, she did possess particularity: a place of birth, a date of origin, a story of parentage, abuse, and utter destitution. The terms of her sub- sequent uplift are so ritually inspirational as to be mythic; the results of her rise are so idiosyncratic as to be impossible. What is Oprah? Oprah is an instance of American astonishment at what can be. From the start, it should be clear: this Oprah is maybe not your Oprah. She is most likely nothing like the Oprah you recollect, the one who hugs and helps and heals the world, one sympathizing smile at a time. For the purposes of this work, the materiality of Oprah Win- frey—her body, her biography, and her singularity—is interesting only insofar as it documents and creates Oprah.1 Shifting from her to it is not easy, since Oprah is a professionally lovable sort of she. But the move is necessary if we are to know just what it is, exactly, that she sells.

OpeningMinds. ChallengingMinds. Message from Henry Louis Gates Jr. houghtful, provocative writing about cultural identity has been rare in this country. How remarkable then, that in 1935, two decades before the landmark Supreme Court T decision, Brown v. Board of Education, a Cleveland poet with a strong sense of social justice created a book prize to honor writers who have deepened our understanding of race and racism. Over time, many outstanding works of fiction and nonfiction have been selected for this prestigious prize. The list starts with such legendary storytellers as Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alan Paton. It includes the Nobel Prize winners Wole Soyinka, Toni Morrison, Nadine Gordimer, and Derek Walcott. Compelling chroniclers David Levering Lewis, Samantha Power, and Annette Gordon-Reed have also been honored. The important mission and focus of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards has also attracted exceptionally strong juries. For the past several years, I have been privileged to serve as jury chair alongside four internationally known writers and scholars: Rita Dove, Joyce Carol Oates, Steven Pinker, and Simon Schama. • Oprah Winfrey and Her Self-Help Saviors: Making the New Age Normal by Kate Maver
STATEMENT DN403 Oprah Winfrey and Her Self-Help Saviors: Making the New Age Normal by Kate Maver This article first appeared in the Volume 23 / Number 4 / 2001 issue of the Christian Research Journal. For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org The weather was frigid in Chicago in January 1998, and the heat was out in the Robert Taylor Homes. Pipes froze and burst. Water gushed into the apartments of impoverished residents and froze on the floors. Destitute mothers and their children huddled close to the open doors of their ovens, trying to warm themselves. During this crisis, a youth worker from this infamous public housing development was in a nearby WalMart buying blankets for residents when he noticed Oprah Winfrey and her crew filming a segment for her TV show. He informed one of Winfrey’s employees about the conditions at Robert Taylor. Word about the horrible plight spread among the crew, and soon Winfrey herself made a deal with WalMart to buy 500 space heaters for the residents at the Robert Taylor Homes.1 Avoiding grandstanding or an ostentatious show of wealth, Winfrey simply did what any good person with the means should do. She saw a need and met it. When asked about her involvement, she put the focus on the problem rather than on herself. It’s easy to respect a woman like that. Given her focus on personal integrity, it is challenging for the thoughtful Christian to critique the numerous errors of Winfrey’s New Age gurus without being disrespectful or unappreciative of Winfrey’s good intentions.
