OUR VIEW Save the salt May Resolution 8 inspire greater search behind Bonneville Salt Flats’ troubles It may only be a small bill before the Utah Legislature without any cash or push to get things done. But maybe, just maybe, it will be enough to inspire the right people to find answers for the Bonneville Salt Flats’ troubles. A front-page story in last Thursday’s edition reported that the House had passed Concurrent Resolution 8 by a 71-1 vote. Introduced by Rep. Stephen Handy, R-Layton and backed by Sen. Peter Knudson, R-Brigham City, the res- olution “strongly urges the Bureau of Land Management to formulate a plan ... to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats to safe land speed racing conditions.” “The purpose of the resolution is to raise awareness of the salt flats and hopefully get some movement,” Handy said. “It’s a pure message bill. ... I hope it will reach the BLM, who will say, ‘You know what, we’re going to get behind this.’” Every major land speed race scheduled for the salt flats in Tooele County was canceled last summer and fall because of rain and salt deterioration that resulted in unsafe surface conditions. Most of the races were also canceled in 2014 for the same reasons. Although a past Utah Geological Survey study states the salt flats haven’t suffered a salt volume loss, and nature is likely behind the sudden recent changes there, land speed racing officials believe a company that mines pot- ash from the salt flats has impacted the salt’s quantity. We, too, hope that Handy and Knudson’s “message bill” reaches the BLM, because that’s exactly where it needs to land. The Bonneville Salt Flats are managed by the federal agency. But there are a couple of more reasons why the BLM needs to “get behind this.” According to the BLM’s website, the Bonneville Salt Flats are an “Area of Critical Environmental Concern” under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976. he 2015-16 high school boys basketball sea- son will be remembered for a long time in TTooele County. It will be remembered in Grantsville for the Cowboys’ surge to a runner-up finish in Region 10, and their emotional, nip-and-tuck game against Pine View in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament. Seniors Cameron Potter, Colton Adams, Cody Riding, Christian Kelley and Kyle Peterson all played crucial roles this season for Grantsville. At Tooele, senior Ace Hymas had a season to remember, earning Region 10 MVP honors after finishing as the second-leading scorer in Class 3A. Hymas averaged 20.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season, while fellow senior Connor Searle averaged 12.8 points and 10.2 rebounds. Senior point guard Isaac Montague led Class 3A in assists per game at 4.3 as the Buffaloes finished third in Region 10 and faced Desert Hills in the opening round of the state tournament. Stansbury made history, advancing to the state tournament for the first time. The Stallions were led by junior sharpshooter Jase Wanlass, while seniors Dakota Fidler, Jaxon Hale and Colton Christiansen all contributed to the Stallions’ most successful season. Stansbury’s season ended at the hands of eventual state champion Dixie in the first round of the playoffs, but this year was a major step forward for the program.
